You mentioning this reminds me of a documentary I watched a few years ago about a early 70's commune, I think it was in California. Even as hard as they tried to level everything and wipe away all distinctions, a heirarchy eventually re-emerged.
After a few short years, the communal participants had either left or were disillusioned and ready to drift apart.

Individualist anarchism of the late 19th century variety surrounding Benjamin Tucker and Lysander Spooner embraced these social distinctions and believed the private associations and fraternal organizations would replace the government's economic and legal services.

So individualist anarchism didn't make cultural egalitarianism its number one priority.

EDIT: Nevermind, I missed the point of the last post. Yeah, for plenty of reasons, I can't see how fraternal and private organizations would promote equality at all. Which means I really dislike that 'solution'.

I wish we took after our bonobo cousins more and their solutions to conflict. ;)

I'd join an anarcho-sexual commune in a heartbeat.

Yes, that's how I remember it too, although the memory is getting dim and was hazy to begin with from all the substance abuse that went along with it.

Wow, suddenly my time at University seems far less "educational".

And speaking of Bonobo Chimp social behaviour, often conflicts are also resolved by a high level of gang voilence. Either towards other groups or to individuals in their own group.
I'm not sure endorsing such behaviour amongst us humans is a good idea.

Hopefully the other apes won't progress to that level any time soon.

The permaculture movement could easily be described as a radical ecological agro-anarchy. Primates initially developed our insider/outsider instincts to limit the size of the insider social group (those to whom we willingly extend behaviors like reciprocal altruism and empathy) to a the sustainable population for the food resources within the group's territory. The mission of the permaculture movement is for people to recreate a sustainable local food resource territory for themselves with a bottom-up, grassroots approach.
