Combining two sets and using some alternative sub-prompts for each:

No. 11: Yonder stands your orphan with his gun; Crying like a fire in the sun
    and
No. 31: So why then has all my life made no sound?

@Thumper09 @Kit' @earlybird-obi-wan - Amazing work, you guys! I've updated the index, but if I'm missing anything, let me know. ;)

We now have one week remaining in our official Angstember challenge! Remember you can still continue to work on and submit entries after the deadline, but the "official" part of our challenge ends Saturday, November 30th at 11:59pm PST. With the word race still going on, now is a great time to sneak in another Angstember entry or two. Let's see what we can accomplish! [face_mischief]

Today is the final day of Angstember! My own plans to post another entry before the deadline fell short, but there's still time if anyone else has an angsty fic to share!

Here's my last one in the official Angstember timeframe, with Myn Donos and Lara Notsil.

    Combination of prompts
No. 15: She was a stranger who everybody thought that they knew; The world that contained her, she always kept hidden from view
No. 21: Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide; No escape from reality
No. 23: You look so beautiful tonight; Reminds me how you laid us down and gently smiled before you destroyed my life

    and
No. 28: If you believed when I said I’d be better off without you, then you never really knew me at all
along with some of their sub-prompts and a couple alternate sub-prompts.

Hello, angstmongers! We've reached the official end of our Angstember event, which means it's time to say congratulations to our one and only Angstember Completionist! This intrepid author managed to write for every set of prompts on our list, so please join me in giving a big round of applause to:

Our hats off to you, earlybird! That is quite an impressive accomplishment two years in a row. :D I'd also like to give a special shout-out to @amidalachick, @Kit', and @Thumper09 as well for their amazing work these last three months! Thank you to everyone for all your wonderful, angsty contributions to this year's Angstember challenge. I had a lot of fun hosting this challenge once again, and I hope you all enjoyed wallowing in those darker emotions for a while. [face_mischief] Remember, the challenge period may have officially ended, but you are still free to continue writing for the Angstember prompts and posting your progress in this thread; anyone who finishes all thirty-one sets of prompts will receive honorary Angstember completionist status in our index! [face_batting]

As a final note, I'd love to get your thoughts on the format of this year's challenge (spread out over three months, September through November) versus the way we did it last year (confined to a single month, in October). I've enjoyed having it both ways, and I'm curious to see if there's a preference one way or another. One idea I've floated is alternating between a shorter event one year and a longer event the next, but that's just a possibility for now, and we can certainly stick to one of the previous formats if that's what everyone enjoys. Let me know what you think!

(Be back soon with the next challenge!)

The three months had me exploring my character in great detail and was fun to do.

    Congratulations, @earlybird-obi-wan! [face_party]

I'm going to say that I like having it spread out over three months because it gives me a better chance of completing anything :p But also all of these prompts are so good that I consider the thread a serious repository of plot bunnies, so eventually I'm bound to be back with a few incredibly belated stories :p

Well done, @earlybird-obi-wan ; that was some truly impressive angsty work! =D=

Thanks for asking for our feedback about the challenge timing, @ViariSkywalker . I know I didn’t really take part much this time around, but I always enjoy reading your variety of prompts and had been thinking of marrying a couple of them to a story I had in progress for one of my older outstanding OTP prompts. I rather liked it having the challenge spaced out over multiple months, just because these are such rich prompts in themselves; that way anyone going for completion or near-completion has some leeway, because a month is a long time to fit in three to four prompts per day. But an alternation between one and three months from year to year could work well, too, so I wouldn’t say no to that either. I totally trust whatever you decide, and know it will be a cool and stimulating challenge either way!

Thanks to @earlybird-obi-wan, @Gabri_Jade, and @Findswoman for the feedback! It's incredibly helpful to get other perspectives on this. I personally lean toward the three-month version of the challenge as well; I do still love the single-month challenge as a concept, but like Finds said, these prompts are so rich and varied that we can really benefit from having a more relaxed timeline.

If anyone else has any further thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them! Did you like the new Angstember with its longer timeline, or do you prefer the faster pace of a one-month challenge?

And while I'm here, why don't I introduce our next challenge? [face_batting]

    Angst Challenge #8

    Apology Letter

After the deluge of prompts for Angstember and the mad scramble of the Word Race (not to mention multiple big challenges ongoing or coming up very soon), I’d like to keep our next Angst Challenge fairly simple. To that end, your challenge this time around is to write a story in the format of an apology letter from one character to another character. See? Nice and easy. ;) You will have eight weeks to complete and post your response.

    Some other stipulations:
    • Your fic must be at least 300 words
    • The apology must be a genuine one. (Passive aggressive apologies are great angst fodder, but I'd like to see us dive into some genuine remorse here.)
    • You may include additional narrative framing, but it is not required.
    • The apology letter should be written from one character to another character, not to a group or larger entity.
    • Whether or not the recipient of the letter receives it, or is even intended to receive it, is up to you.
    • Bonus Challenge: If this simpler prompt is too tame for your liking, I challenge you to include these three words somewhere in your story: fathom, faithless, and flout
    • Entries are due Friday, January 31st. As always, the due dates in this thread are goals, and you are always welcome to write for any of our challenges, even after the deadline has passed. ;)

As always, the TOS apply! Happy writing, and may the angst be with you. [face_mischief]

I've given Challenge #8 a go. 'One Less Apprentice'

Any issues with the writing of this letter are the character's fault, not mine ;):p

    May I have this please?

Instant inspiration from a prompt is the best. :D I've added your entry to the index!

Welcome to Angstmongers Anonymous! (Or not so anonymous :p) It's awesome to have you here, and I've got your fic in the index now. ;)

So I realized as I was checking my prompt doc for this quote that I'd actually already given number 4 to someone else and failed to update the index accordingly. I'm sorry I can't give you your first choice, but I do still have numbers 1, 5, 12, and 14 available if you'd like to choose one of those instead? Excellent! Your quote is:

    1. “Of course I was under the spell, and the wonderful part is that, even at the time, I perfectly knew I was.” (Henry James, The Turn of the Screw)

This is on the back-burner right now, but looking into The Turn of the Screw, aspects of it feel very relevant to the story I’ve hinted at in #8. [face_thinking]
