People using makeup or not using makeup is none of your damn business.

mikeximus : If you see repeated posts that go on for a page or more and say "Why was Anakin so damn ugly in that scene?", please tag me. I will be happy to express my disgust.

I agree that it's not cool for both men or women. And I certainly will object if actors receive such treatment, but it does not happen to men nearly as often, nor does anyone yell "PC police" when protests are raised to men being objectified. Nobody behaves as if that's the sole purpose of the actor's existence, even if he is intended to be good-looking.

That's what I see happening here.

    This thread is beyond sexist.

It's very disappointing people act like this is the 1960s.

Not one person in this thread stated that Portman needed to wear make-up to make them happy. However, there is nothing wrong with someone being more attracted too, or for thinking and expressing that they believe a women is more beautiful when they wear make-up, but again, as long as it is done without being insulting. However, words like"ugly" go beyond being appropriate in expressing an opinion.

There are plenty of posts throughout these forums where men are "objectified", from the scene in ROTS where Anakin is shirtless and people have posted pics of him in the scene with comments of how good he looks. There is a whole thread where for page after page men are objectified as animals (or other negative connotations) because there are individuals that show poor common decency with the "man-spreading" phenomenon.

The bottom line is that people shouldn't be shamed because of what they do or don't find attractive, as long as they can express it in a decent manner. To me, there is nothing wrong with pointing out that in this scene Portman is less attractive than in the other scenes of the movie, and trying to figure out why, if it was intentional by the filmmaker, or because of the actress having to have to look a certain way for another film.

I don't know how anyone can possibly say that "women are more beautiful with makeup" without being insulting. It translates to "You are hideous in your natural state, cover it up." Thankfully I've never been in a relationship with anyone who was that superficial. I can't imagine being in the shoes of those poor women who are asked to wear makeup 24/7, including to bed.

As far as a thread with page after page of objectified men...I don't recall it. However, there was a thread in the YJCC called "Hot celebrities" which got locked because people were creeped out by all the objectification. Is the PT forum more tolerant of creepiness and objectifying human beings than the YJCC?

It's one thing to post one picture or comment about someone being hot; nothing wrong with that. But when there is post after post about how hot a character is, and/or comments about how ugly he/she is when not made up, in a nightgown, whatever, it gets wrong and creepy.

Just because that is your opinion on the matter of make-up doesn't mean everyone else needs to be shamed into following your line of thinking. It's no different than a woman being attracted to a man tha is muscular and takes care of himself by working out. That is what they like, that is what they are attracted too, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Edit: If a woman expresses that is what she is attracted too, it shouldn't automatically mean she is demeaning people who are overweight or don't take care of themselves.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

And there is nothing wrong in expressing what someone believes is beautiful, again, as long as they are not being insulting.

I have no problem shaming superficial people, including any woman who would call her partner "ugly" if he could not keep his muscular form all the time.

The "shaming" happening here is expecting anyone to be top-of-their-form beautiful all the time, lest they can expect to be insulted.

Worse than the 60s I imagine. Even then "men" didn't randomly call women ugly for not wearing make-up. This thread is extremely juvenile and judgmental.

What you're not seeing here is that there is a systematic approach to how women are being treated when it comes to their physical appearance, that - frankly - doesn't exist when it comes to men.
Women are expected to wear make-up to cover any imperfections. They are expected to care about how they look. They are expected to dress in a certain way. If they don't, they are considered unattractive, weird, or even bad people.
With men, it's more "eh - if he's muscular, that's neat. If not, that's OK too".

Of course men are objectified as well. Of course we have expectations to live up to as well. But not nearly as much as women, and not nearly as specific as the expectations on women - or with the same consequences should we choose to ignore them.

No, they aren't. I am ugly. I consider myself ugly.

If they think I am ugly, it is their opinion. I don't care.

That's an issue I hope everyone can fight against. But I hope you know I don't see Natalie Portman as merely an object, just because I noticed something about her physical appearance.

Late 70s- early 2000s is the era where superficial judgment and expectations of a person's physical appearance seem to have been most promoted in the media imo.

I know it still exists today because I have a depressed female friend who looks like a model already, but is constantly putting herself down and starving herself to "look better".

Nah, it's cool. As I said, it's not noticing that she is attractive that is the issue. It's the harping on it. And expecting either her or a character she plays to wear makeup to bed or be called "ugly."

Seriously? You're giving her the warning? All she's doing is expressing disgust at crass remarks about a woman's appearance. You really don't see how that might piss some people off?

She edited herself, which is acceptable. That edited version of the word is used all the time, by users, mods, managers, and admins. She really did nothing against the rules.

She is not ugly in that scene, but she does look different. I don't think that that has anything to do with makeup.
Here is a few pictures I used to compare, from three consecutive scenes.
