Alright, well you just lost all credibility. You are going to criticize this film but endorse the one that heavily implied a human/orangutan romance subplot and thought "monkey Abraham Lincoln" was a profound statement? Come on.

That was an unabashed plot device. But unlike the version you enjoy, they actually used it in the service of a good narrative. To hit another point, the first film actually did offer up some thematic content on the ethics of animal experimentation and zoos in general. It was a much more thoughtful look than even the original film's gesture about the dangers of nuclear war. And just because we can't make the point enough, you choose neither of these options, instead highlighting "animals take over Washington DC" as the most powerful message you can imagine from these films.

The Tim Burton version was only ok for entertainment value; and yes it hasn't aged well. It borrowed only bits and pieces from the original film, including this guy
    [IMG]

But the plot went off on a tangent, and the ending, as @Jabba-wocky alludes to, was beyond absurd. Yeah, I know it's a Burton trademark to get a little twist in a feature film, but it really made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I said I remember liking it, I didn't say I like it. This is over twenty years ago. I liked Attack Of The Clones.

But I agree that the story in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (dumb name) was such that I rooted for the apes. Not so in the sequels, I just saw CG hordes that I didn't care about.

    Ahsoka, your link isn't showing.

I mainly remember the Tim Burton version for Paul Giamatti being Paul Giamatti, but in an orangutan suit

Because they are. The human antagonists (and, really, anyone not in the immediate family) in Rise are practically parody or cartoon and come damn near close to tanking the entire movie despite the good work done with Ceasar.

Thankfully the sequels corrected that problem and at least make them comparatively more balanced and more logically portrayed. One of many reasons why the sequels are immeasurably better.

[face_talk_hand] the stories were generic pap and the characters were goofy. A gorilla on a horse

The Tim Burton version has great ape makeup from Rick Baker...and not much else. The script is terrible, the ending is nonsensical, and some of the acting is just atrocious (looking at you Tim Roth). And how the hell does the Paul Giamatti monkey man know what Aspirin is?

Tim Roth was fairly intimidating and effective as a villain from what I recall. But the makeup was truly the star.

Not to mention the trailer was among the last major "In a world..." trailers.

Okay I tried the Burton one but I couldn't make it past half an hour in, or so. Aged badly? It seemed an eighties movie. Really bad. And Markie Mark is a crap actor.

It's not worth pushing through for, since the ending is total nonsense in an attempt to replicate the WTF factor of the original film's twist ending. But it is worth watching for the technical aspect, re: the makeup effects, and for some of the performances that manage to come through that makeup that give it a unique quality separate from the later CG efforts.

I wouldn't say it has an 80's vibe, though. There might be some Burton from that era bleeding in but I think it's more Burton's overall style that you're seeing (ie: the villain apes are in the same wheelhouse as DeVito's Penguin from Batman Returns, for instance). The film has strong flavor of that late 90's, post-Stargate, post-ID4, early 00's, pre-Spider-Man 2 tentpole (the 00's especially in the marketing). The emphasis on pushing makeup effects to the next level in the face of the rise of CGI also evokes similar Baker efforts in MIB and Galaxy Quest.

I agree that the make-up for the male apes was good. But what I couldn't get past was the ape girl. I just saw latter-day Michael Jackson.

It’s where Burton met Bonham Carter, and she’s playing the semi-romantic interest (or at least the one ape character that has to approach that subtext) so the softer/more human styling makes sense in that context- but still intentionally weird.

The only defense (as it were) of Burton's ending is he was trying to replicate the ending of the original novel which has the humans get back to earth, everything looks normal but everyone is an ape.

    From the wiki entry-
Ulysse programs the ship back to Earth. As they fly over Paris, Orly Airport and the Eiffel Tower look the same. When they land, however, they are greeted by a field officer in a Jeep who is a gorilla. It is subsequently revealed, via the frame story, that Jinn and Phyllis are actually civilized chimpanzees, and they discard Ulysse's story as sheer fantasy because they find the idea of intelligent humans unbelievable.

I recall they either shot, or had planned multiple different endings and just ended up choosing that one, as it set up a sequel. Which I think is the problem- it wasn't organic to the first film.

I'm glad they're going to continue the franchise. Even though the last movie didn't leave much of Cliffhanger, there's still that underlying story involving Charlon Heston's character crash-landing on the future Earth inhabited by apes. There was that pretty obvious "Easter Egg" (if you call it that) in Rise where a small team of astronauts were lost in an early mission to Mars (this happened well before the Simian Flu virus affected the entire Earth).

Well no Matt Reeves is a bummer but probably due to Batman. At least they have some of the same writers, and hopefully Serkis comes back as a new ape.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was good. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes were great. I’m looking forward to this one even if no Reeves.

Dawn is my favourite, the Caesar vs. Koba Return of the Jedi style finale showdown was gold. Also it gets nasty but War seems even nastier in a not as fun sort of way.
