ok, this has been bothering me for years! in the lord of the rings films how did aragorn keep his beard so short and stubbly? assuming there was time for grooming between all the fighting ringwraiths and orcs, was he really going for the scruffy tough guy look? that seems oddly vain. no, the only logical explanation is that his beard grows really slow. but then he becomes king and bam! suddenly he has a huge beard.

i definitely need some alternate explanations.

my guess is that his beard length reflects his station in life. for example if he was a lowlife bum drunkard nobody he would have no facial hair whatsoever. if he were a god, he would have really long hair sprouting from everywhere, even his butt.

i do like your theory duende, and i have to admit it did occur to me. but it's so... metaphysical. like his beard is somehow directly tied to god. i don't know if i can buy it.

What happens when you shave with a knife? Does it get close to the performance of a razor? Or would it leave stubble?

if the knife is sharp, it can shave to the skin (and beyond, if enough force is applied).

tom: you can buy it. it will cost you only five gold pieces. money well spent!

    it's not really stubble though.

i mean, that's a beard. if he was shaving with a knife you'd think it would be closer to the skin or there'd at least be some big chunks missing.

Gandalf put a spell on it to keep it short so that Aragorn could go undercover as Strider. His normal kingly beard would have given him away from the get go. Aragorn's actions and deeds in ROTK caused the spell to wear off as there was no longer any need to hide his identity and he needed his lush beard to inspire the men.

Probably because Aragorn looks so weird without a beard:

I thought his beard looked a bit patchy during some moments of the films.
    Sort of Keanu Reevish.

I wonder. The films make the timespan look funny, i.e. it took the Felllowship three weeks to get from Rivendell to Moria, and only like three days to get across Rohan to Edoras, but it's shown in roughly the same amount of time. In RotK, almost all the action takes place on a few days, and then jumps ahead a few months to the coronation. :-B

Now I want to go watch this to see if they got every minute detail of his beard progression and/or left him opportunities to have shaved.

On a previous visit to Lothlorien, Galadriel gave him a mystical elven beard trimmer.

When the one ring was destroyed, it lost it's power to trim whiskers.

Little known fact covered in one of the appendices.

    beard

A common word used to address a homosexual's female friend who he takes around town; he normally calls this companion his "girlfriend" to prove to the world that he is a masculine, football watching, titty grabbing heterosexual male. Although, he may think that this so called 'image' is working, he's actually fooling himself. It's completely obvious to on-lookers that he is a flamboyant homo. Gayer than a chihuahua in pink shades.

Here are some warning signs that you may be a beard...

    1. He wears more makeup than you.
    2. He looks ****ing FIERCE in pictures 'cause he smiles wit' his eyes.
    3. Uses bronzer as blush
    4. Plucks his own eyebrows and his eyebrows look more groomed than yours.
    5. Stands with hands on his hips.

Who the hell does Gayfron think that he is fooling? We all know that Vanessa Hudgens is his beard.

Have you ever watched Sunset Tan? Nick's beard sort of looks like a tranny.

He shaved in Bree, Rivendell, Hollin, Lothlorien, Edoras, Helm's Deep and Gondor. All of these scenes were ultimately cut from the extended editions.

Yeah in Lorien I think Aragorn shaved using The Mirror of Galadriel as a basin.

ok so did denethor and other minas tirith peoples just have more advanced shaving technology? was the idea that aragorn was just in a huge hurry? shaving with a knife in a huge hurry doesn't seem really bright. or did he just think the stubble made him look "bad"?

Because they're so smooth and waxy. I'd think that would be an "all over" type of trait.
