Bio: Red Hood is no longer who he was, because as Robin, he was murdered by the Joker. Presumably by miracle of the Lazarus Pit, he is back among the living, but not as his old self. He has vowed to ‘clean-up’ Gotham his way- that is - by crossing lines Batman would not, killing being one of them. He also has a secret agenda which involves retribution against his former mentor and the twisted clown who killed him.

BIO: Cassandra (“Cassie”) was born in Hong Kong 1998 to a Chinese woman who was raped by a US sailor in port the year before. It was the last party before the territory was handed back to China by the British. Unwanted by her mother, Cassie was sold to a traveling circus. They named her Yuyan, and as she showed natural agility, she was trained from childhood in acrobatics. Unfortunately, the circus was also linked to a criminal gang.

Yuyan was “requisitioned” by the Black Dragon triads, and trained to work as a thief for the gangsters. She proved good at it, her agility and gymnastic skills enabling her to penetrate secure buildings and repeatedly evade arrest. This saved her from a life of forced prostitution.

The murderous triads regarded her only as a tool. She was used, abused, and suffered a loveless life. In her spare time, she became an amateur but tenacious detective, gradually tracing clues to her past. She finally tracked down her mother and demanded an explanation. The mother explained what had happened and pleaded forgiveness. She gave Yuyan a photo of herself taken with the father, before the night had gone bad with too much alcohol. This was the only connection Yuyan had to her true identity.

When the triads decided to infiltrate the US, Yuyan was sent to their new base in Gotham City’s Chinatown, and took the English name, Cassandra – or Cassie. The gang quickly established themselves with a string of violent crimes. Cassie was used to steal industrial or military secrets from various high-security facilities, and Black Dragon sold these to the highest bidders back in China. When Ronald Cain, a prominent Republican senator, was lobbying hard for hawkish sanctions against China, a request was made for his “disposal”. This would be Black Dragon’s most daring, high-profile crime yet. They decided to send Cassie, this time as an assassin. When she researched her target, she recognised him from her old photo, looked up his past career in the US Navy. Cassie realised Cain was her father. On the night of the planned hit, she instead decided talk to him. The conversation did not go as she planned. Cain wanted nothing to do with her.

During the emotional confrontation, Cain secretly alerted his security and they managed to surprise and capture Cassie. The GCPD had been after a Black Dragon member for some time and leant hard on her to turn state’s evidence so they could take down the whole gang. She refused, saying they would not be able to protect her from retribution. In her mind, she was already dead.

There was only one person who could protect her and convince her to do the right thing: Batman.

Cassie was taken to a “secret and secure location” and placed under Batman’s supervision. Of course, Black Dragon found it and a battle between their members and Batman ensued. Cassie escaped into the Gotham night. It became a race for who would find her first, a race Batman won.

Where no-one had stood up for Cassie her entire life, Batman did, and he won her undying loyalty. Once Black Dragon was finally defeated, as well as going into the witness protection programme as a university student, Cassie decided she also wanted to work for him. Her skills were already formidable, but with additional training and equipment, she became Batgirl…
