So, I’m liking the idea of Henry Cavill more after an Ahsoka rewatch.

He can pass off as a young Ray Stevenson, he’s not exactly a box office draw but he’s well liked among the more vocal “nerd” corners of the internet and would probably resonate well with YouTubers, and you can have prequel material featuring Hayden Christensen and Henry Cavill teaming up during The Clone Wars.

    Jeff Sneider claims that
Rory McCann, who played the Hound on GoT, will play Baylan in Ahsoka S2. https://x.com/TheInSneider/status/1877508792172019929

If true, he certainly has the size for the role, but they don't look alike at all IMO. Will he be good in the role though? I think so, probably.

Well, it's certainly an interesting recast. Not what I was hoping for, but I think it will be cool. I'm a fan of that actor and his previous work, for sure.

I wonder if season 2 will begin with him getting clobbered by a wampa and dunked in bacta. It would rhyme.

A lateral move at worst, McCann is freaking fantastic. I can see Baylan being angrier now though

Yeah, maybe this is what Filoni is thinking. That as Baylan moves farther to the darkside, McCann will be a perfect fit.

It's hard for me to imagine him though as ever having been a Jedi, for some reason. It will be interesting to see if his character is still portrayed in a grey zone.

Great casting, shame i never thought of it. And he was good friend to Ray Stevenson

Yeah, I was happy to hear that. Passing the torch here will make the recasting more palatable.

A perfect 1:1 replacement was always an impossible goal but this is brilliantly close.

Smart decision to recast and leave story possibilities open. This isn't a "Peter Cushing's CG doppelgänger only needed for a few scenes" or "Carrie Fisher is irreplacable" situation.

Maybe they'll digitally place Paul Hollywood's head onto Rory's body.

That was also my baseline standard. Anyone but Butler. I would’ve taken frickin’ Anthony Ingruber over Butler.

    The crossover casting continues. :)

Granted I've only seen McCann as the Hound, but he wouldn't just be doing the same here. On the character level, I could see Baylan being angrier depending on how the season progresses. But coming off Season 1 I think he's had his faith restored, at least to some degree.

McCann might be mildly typecast for the Hound’s angry side, but I actually think the thing he also displayed in that role that would fit well with Stevenson’s portrayal of Babylon is the quiet sort of refined sorrow - Stevenson’s Baylan never really seemed angry, but his bitterness had a definite edge of sadness and a sort of “determination born through resignation” feel to it.

Stevenson played Baylan as so jaded that his reaction to Ahsoka drawing a lightsaber wasn’t insulted pride, gleeful malice, or even frustrated anger, but rather a sort of expectant disappointment - and his reaction to his apprentice acting more stereotypical had an equal kind of expectant disappointment to it.

McCann’s Hound was most famous for his crude belligerence, violent wrath, and bitter joy when taking out the trash… but McCann played that as partially real, and partially a facade covering a man defined by the sorrow at how horrible the world was, not just to him, but everyone, that came into focus in the later seasons (when he arguably got the material most consistent in quality with the previous stuff compared to most everyone else getting worse writing to work with.) He solidly played the character where the most genuinely happy he was on screen was a small, almost hidden, still sort of sad but joyful grin at hearing Arya was still alive and back at Winterfell, and where his hatred for his brother turned out to still have a small element of pity for his future zombie condition.

Baylan would probably play more consistently with Stevenson’s portrayal of McCann uses that overlooked part of his résumé, especially since the character is clearly convinced he’s not a dark sider in spite of his clear fall.

Baylan's quest has put him on course for the mountain.

    How poetic. Or something.
