?Lando and I would be happy to take care of the Solo children until Leia is able,? Tendra told the Masters? Council.

?All of them?? Corran Horn asked. His eyebrows furrowed, doubtful of the Calrissians? ability. It wasn?t that the Solos were horrendous children. It was just that there were four of them that needed to be cared for. His question reminded everyone of the Horn family?s offer to take in one Solo child.

Lando nodded. ?Yes, all of them. The children?s caseworker has already been to our home and has given her approval. Our workload is not terrible so we will be available to be able to talk to the children as well.?

?What of their education?? asked Kyle Katarn. The bearded Jedi was an instructor himself and the question seemed very appropriate.

?We are actively searching for a tutor,? Tendra a

DARTH_MU, I'm glad you're happy about Luke and Callista I tried to put many overlooked couples or not canonical relationships in this 'fic, like Luke/Callista and Lando/Tendra.

And, Twin_Saber, I don't want to give anything away but the fact that Jacen isn't there has a lot to do with this.

 

?And there?s Dubrillion.? Tendra pointed toward the blue-green planet laced with fluffy white clouds. Beautiful was the first word that came to Jaina?s mind when she saw Dubrillion. She was a politician?s kid raised on Coruscant: natural scenery wasn?t the way anybody would describe that city-planet. But even though Jaina could recognize the planet?s beauty, she could not appreciate it as much as she could have. With the events of the last week being what they were, what was beauty worth?

As the Lady Luck entered the planet?s atmosphere, Dubrillion?s individual cities and countrysides became evident. The texture of the land became visible and the ground rushed toward them.

?That large city to the right is the capital city,? Lando said. ?Often, tourists go there to see the large aquarium set up there.?

?That?s why Lando set up his hotel there,? Tendra said, her mouth turning upward into a wry smile.

?How far away is your home?? Anakin asked, saying what both he and Jaina had been thinking. Jaina was interested in what the Calrissians were saying, but her increasing drowsiness overpowered her curiosity to know more about the planet she would now call home.

?Not very,? Lando assured him. For the next twenty minutes, the Lady Luck journeyed with relative silence from within. They sped into the dark side of the planet. The moon replaced the sun, the lesser luminary dominating the night.

Tendra spoke then. ?We?re here.?

Lando began the landing pattern, silently confirming his wife?s statement. Jaina watched Lando?s hands, learning the positions of the controls. There were the standard controls that every ship came with, and then there were the special modifications controls. There probably weren?t many other teenaged girls in the galaxy that grew up using modified ships but that was the norm for Jaina. In fact, she wasn?t sure if she?d ever driven a ?normal? ship, used the way it was designed and intended.

After landing, everybody got ready to leave the luxury yacht.

?Don?t worry about it,? Lando told Jaina and Anakin, who were heading toward Tara and Lena. ?Tendra and I can bring them in.?

Jaina blinked a bit in surprise. She wasn?t used to having two able-bodied adults around. Most of the time Leia had so many papers to lug around that Jaina and Anakin were responsible to make sure Tara and Lena made it into the house.

Lando and Tendra gently picked up the sleeping girls; Jaina and Anakin grabbed the luggage. Lando and Tendra just had one small bag?they had just needed to bring enough clothes for three days?and the Solo children had stuffed all they needed in two big suitcases. The Calrissians had promised to take care of anything the kids might have left behind.

?Just leave everything on the floor,? Lando whispered. ?We?ll take care of it in the morning.?

That proposition sounded perfect to Jaina. Her eyes could barely stay open, and these days sleep was Jaina?s best friend. A blessed escape from reality; a blackness that covered all.

The moment Jaina walked into the room designated as hers, she aimed for the bed and fell asleep in moments, not even caring that she hadn?t changed yet. What Jaina did care about was that her black happiness did not come.

Jaina?s dreams came in patches: evil conspiracies, Sith Lords, Chosen Ones, children, murder, speeders and clones all made brief appearances. And loud and clear above all the rest, spoken by a voice that Jaina knew and now feared:

?For the good of the galaxy, Callista Skywalker must die.?

Jaina?s eyes flew open, her heart pounding against her ribcage. Pain seared from her abdomen?while she had been sleeping on her stomach, her pants had been pressed against her. The warm comforter was sliding off of the bed, like they?re known to do when children turn over too many times in their sleep. Jaina slid out of bed, the comforter following her and landing on the floor, and shakily stood.

It was only a dream.

Jaina rubbed her eyes and sighed deeply, her heartbeat subsiding.

*Thinks* Um... Dubious Engagement, I think. It wasn't a major storyline, but the backstory of the AU was that Luke raised the Solo kids.

I'd love to see a fic where, say, Wedge Antilles was forced to raise the (Force-sensitive) children, but AUs of that sort don't seem common

 

That's one of the reasons why I picked Lando and Tendra to be the guardians of the Solo kids in this. They're not Force-sensitive at all, and I like Tendra because she's so normal.

Well, here's an update:

The Solos had been on Dubrillion for a week when Jaina awoke with a desire to explore their new house. She left her room and went down the hallway to the nearest bedroom: Anakin?s. When Jaina peeked into the room, she saw long legs sticking out of his blanket and part of his head sticking out of the other side. She decided to not go in; Anakin hated it when people went into his room without permission and Jaina had no interest in getting him upset.

She skipped the next three bedrooms. Jaina had been in her sisters? rooms enough times already. Lando and Tendra?s bedroom came next but Jaina didn?t even consider going in. They hadn?t told her not to but?it would?ve been weird.

The door to the last bedroom creaked as Jaina opened it slowly. A huge bed was in the corner, covered in a comforter that even [i]looked[/i] warm. There was a door that led to a refresher that could only be accessed through that room. Jaina hadn?t even known that that fresher had existed.

It was the perfect guest room. She wondered why the Calrissians had built so many rooms. Six was the perfect number. [i]There would?ve been room for Jacen, too.[/i]

A sharp pain struck Jaina, causing her shoulders, and consequently her entire upper body, to jerk.

It wasn?t often that the thought of Jacen casually entered Jaina?s mind, but when it did the unexpectancy hurt. Especially now when any little thing could so easily push Jaina into the emotional hysteria that she?d been working so hard to suppress.

Jacen?s death was the reason why her family gradually self-destructed. It wasn?t that Jacen was the glue that held the Solos together; it was their inability to handle grief and loss that broke them apart. Leia had collapsed during one of the political meetings she was always in, and Han?

Jaina harbored strong feelings of anger and bitterness toward Han, which caused her to feel guilty. He was her father, and she wouldn?t be sad if?

Jaina shook her head and left the room, her thirst for exploration gone. She found everybody, except Anakin, in the dining room. They were eating lunch.

[i]Lunch?[/i] ?What time is it?? Jaina asked, realizing that she?d never checked.

?After one,? Lando said after he checked his chrono.

?There are some nerfburgers left on the stove if you want some,? Tendra told her.

?They?re good,? Lena muffled, her mouth full. She had redor sauce on her cheeks.

?I can see that,? Jaina said, grinning at her voracious sister.

As Jaina warmed up and ate her burger, she listened to the chatter around the table. Jaina could tell that although everybody seemed relaxed, nobody was. Jaina knew the time was coming when they?d all sit and ?talk about it?; for now, though, everybody seemed fine with ignoring the rancor in the room. And that was fine with Jaina. She thrived on not talking about things, pretending that everything was [i]just[/i] fine.

Lando?s comlink buzzed. He glanced down. ?It?s Tenel Ka,? Lando said. ?She called earlier but I told her to call back. Do you want to talk to her??

?Yeah,? Jaina said slowly. [i]Alderaan?s ghosts![/i] was her simultaneous thought. Jaina had been on Yavin 4 just a couple days ago but she?d never even thought about stopping by to see her best friend. Between reassuring her scared sisters that their mother would be fine, her worries that she was lying to them, and that meeting with the Council, Jaina hadn?t thought about Tenel Ka at all.

?Hello, this is Jaina.?

?Jaina! This is Tenel Ka. How are you doing??

[i]Well, that?s a loaded question.[/i] ?Pretty good. Hold on a second. I?m going to my room.? She glanced at the Calrissians and they nodded. Once she sat on her bed, she continued. ?Okay.?

?I?m glad you?re doing okay,? Tenel Ka responded. ?I don?t know how [i]I?d[/i] take it if my mother had a mental breakdown.?
