I wish everyone a Happy New Year and while sadly also back at work, here are my pics from last years Celebration during Carrie's panel. She was so funny and I will miss her in Orlando. :(

took my mom and my bro to r1 the day after carrie passed. was wondering what my mom's reaction would be to the end since she's been broken up about it. she didn't really have one but later commented on how strange it is that it's the last time we see "her" right after this.

it's also been hard because even though i'm a guy, my mom and i are super-close and take care of each other much like carrie and her mother. we are also so alike it's scary. we think the same thoughts, make the same jokes before the other even says it out loud, etc.

I agree, when they announced the prequels and had publicity with the original cast, all lioking great and in good health, that would have been the prime time to do the sequesl. In my opinion, and I'll probably be shot for saying this, I would have preferred sequels over prequels any day and rarely revist them, especially TPM.

Got the Princess Diarist for Xmas, thinking I'll download the audiobook now and "read along" with Carrie. If it gets too upsetting I can always read it without but I think the audio of her reading the book may really help

(Start at about the 25 minute mark)

Mark and Carrie at Celebration Europe. Being space twins. I've never seen a more sibling like relationship from co-stars, they've really spent their entire lives together.

I hated that there was even a debate. It bothered me that so, so many Star Wars fans acted as if Carrie Fisher just retired in 1983. She always worked, and not just as a writer. She was on the big screen, small screen, stage, and managed to rack up a couple Emmy noms doing so. In fact, as low key and calm as Leia came off in the final cut of TFA, most of Fisher's other recent work were sardonic, high energy characters.

Even for The Force Awakens most people don't realize she was nominated for a Saturn Award as best supporting actor.

Too bad that she died, hopefully they won't kill off Luke that would be too much. It will be a strange experience watching episode 8 knowing that was Fisher's last movie as far as I know. I grew up on Star Wars so this feels surreal.

I'm not avoiding it at all, but I will say that my most recent viewing of Rogue One definitely felt different at the end, much sadder rather than hopeful.

The last film Carrie did was Wonderwell.

If I ever watch Rouge One again, I'll try and look at the appearance of weird CGI Leia and her "hope" as a preview of coming attractions. Five Carrie Fisher Star Wars performances to look forward to!

I like that he did prequels; a lot of people were curious about the back story of Vader and Obi Wan. They're a mixed bag, but overall I'm fine with them being made. I actually love ROTS.

That said, I, and I imagine scores of others, would have preferred a sequel trilogy with the Big 3 instead.

The thing is, time was of the essence when it came to the ST, if you wanted them in major roles. The PT could have been made at any time, with the only major constraint being Ian as Palpatine.

If Lucas wanted to though, he could've done both. the ST in the 90s and the ST in the aughts, or vice versa.

    He just didn't want to.

Today I binged watched lots of classic Carrie interviews on YouTube. I found it very therapeutic strangely enough. She made me smile so much. Even with tears in my eyes as I watched those bittersweet final interviews she did for her new book, she made me smile. And she will always do that.

Well, context is everything. The world had been supersaturated in SW and by 1985 those action figures were being discounted to practically two for a dollar. Twelve years gave it collective time for excitement to build again for the special editions, and wanting to see the newly announced prequels... Personally my heart sank that he really was going back in time instead of forwards with Ford, Hamill and Fisher. But it seemed ten plus years was the right amount of time to rebuild and whet our appetites between each trilogy... Again the supersaturation subsides to longing... For fans and detractors of the prequels both. Fans for continuing what they love, new young fans that began with the prequels, detractors who felt SW should be redeemed or go back to its roots, etc. Basically it needed time to breathe.

Now I don't know if age is a factor to whether it would have changed the plot of a sequel trilogy. But sixty is not old. Her age (really late 50s) has no bearing on factoring on if these movies should be made when they were. Meryl Streep is leading movies in her early sixties. Maggie Smith is 119 years old and still does it. No, it was no different than flukey things happen in life. Heath Ledger died early. James Dean, hundreds of other actors. It was just a freak occurrence. She was more active and energized than she'd been in years, and up for anything. It was just an unfortunate and horribly tragic event.

I hope you're right. It's a very fine line they have to walk. IMO, putting Leia in a small handful of scenes in Episode 9 could be very moving if it's done well. But if they use her too much, it may cross the line into weird/uncomfortable.

I just want them to wrap up Leia's story arc in a satisfying way that does justice to the character. She deserves no less. The story they gave her in TFA was nothing but misery and loss. I do believe there was an endgame plan to give Leia a happier resolution to her story in the final movie, but with Carrie gone that's all blown to hell. Whenever they cobble together, I think it will be a shadow of what Leia's story should have been.

I keep thinking of Lawrence Kasdan's quote that the Star Wars saga is all about "fathers and sons, mothers and sons, mothers and daughters." If Leia is Rey's mother, it appears they were supposed to have some meaningful scenes together in Episode 9. That opportunity is gone, but I would like to see them have at least one scene together as mother and daughter, even if it has to be with Leia as a force ghost. Assuming that they are indeed mother and daughter.

At the very least, maybe Episode 9 can finally put to rest the disgusting notion that Leia was in any way to blame for Ben's fall to the dark side.

I think Leia should be allowed to survive this trilogy. It's the best way to honor the character and the woman who brought Leia to life, in my opinion.

They only need to show her in IX when absolutely needed, one or two scenes with Kylo and Rey, a scene of her leading the Resistance to victory against the First Order, and one final scene of Luke and Leia watching the new generation of heroes celebrating their victory.

Then, when they do the fourth trilogy (and it's not "if they do", it's "when they do"), say Leia retired to New Alderaan, with one of the characters communicating with her via hologram once, like Spock Prime in the Trek movies.

The Bloodline novel seems to suggest that Leia may have been at least a small factor in Ben's fall to the Dark Side.

The alleged factor in question? The fact that she did not tell even her own son that she is the daughter of Darth Vader, and that he likely found out the same way the rest of the Galaxy did. That's what i got out of the novel, anyway.

Except age is an enormous factor when it comes to Hollywood in general, and especially with this particular franchise.

Lucas never has revolved a trilogy around older characters. He had made lots of room for them in prominent supporting roles, but the action never revolves around them.

Any shot to have a sequel trilogy revolving the Big 3 died years ago. The only shot would've been if they picked up with Luke & Leia in their 30s, maybe early 40s, and Han in his 40s/50s (though there's a huge chance Harrison wouldn't have done it then).

So even removing the reality that yes, people do run into more health issues at this age, the chance to have a Luke/Han/Leia centric Star Wars died the minute George Lucas announced the prequels.

Leia can communicate to Rey or whoever just by voice in IX if need be just like Obi-Wan Kenobi did to Luke at the end of Episode IV. Whether that means hiring a new voice actress to impersonate Leia's voice and piling on the effects to disguise it a bit or doing what they did in VII with Alec Guinness (risks being too choppy). There's various ways they can go.

    If they can bring
Ezra's deceased non-Jedi parents back to communicate with him
on Star Wars Rebels and whatever that means in terms of the canon, they can do that.

Hindsight is 20/20. Of course anyone can say "oh we should have made these movies much earlier" but that can be the case no matter what. Nobody can predict tragedy-EVER. Max Von Sydow and Christopher Lee did their roles in the mid-80's. 60 is young.

The voice for Leia will be tricky since Carrie had such a unique voice later on. That was the biggest issue with Tarkin-the voice and mouth movement. A hologram message by Leia at the time of an attack to her son pleading him to do the right thing and for him to know how much she and Han loved him may be all that is needed if Leia is intended to pass on. It can even be done to look like the transmission was choppy due the attack. A hologram message saved by Artoo just like the first hologram message in ANH. Then, you can have a Force ghost of Leia at the end.

It's really not hindsight though. Lots of people felt the ST should've been the greenlight trilogy, long before we ever got an official ST.

Speaking for myself? For years I've thought it was foolish for someone of these major studios to not take into account reality; e.g. no actual shoot dates for the Sigourney Weaver helmed Alien sequel or Indy V.

I'm venting here thoughts I've had for years. I never thought this would apply to Carrie, obviously, as the youngest of the OT3. But the passage of time has robbed us of the chance to see them in these parts for longer, and potentially across more films.

Bless her heart, she's been through so much. But if she's anything like her mother and grandmother then she's strong and she's a fighter, and she'll be ok.
