No, Wonka just shows them around the factory and the kids get themselves into trouble via their own character flaws. Think of it as a morality play aimed at kids and adults and you won't be too far off.

That said, I enjoyed the film. Dark and trippy, but with a very important message at it's core. Most of those kids were rotten due in part to their parents enabling them to engage in destructive behaviors: gluttony, spoiling, narcissism, and apathy to anything other than what's on TV. Charlie, while living in utter poverty (where's Habitat For Humanity when you need them?), had a family who all cared for him and his well being. He learned the value of hard work (the model of the factory) and the value of money. But most importantly, he learned what was right and what was wrong as he always had someone there to look out for him and guide him down the right path. If the other kids didn't have parents who were enablers, then none of them would have ended up in their various predicaments in the first place.

All in all, I do plan on going back to see this one a second time, perhaps even a third time. And I will most definitely get it when it comes out on DVD.

Although, the fattie who fell in the chocolate looked like my brother when he was dopesick and shat his bed. [face_laugh]

I must say, that it may not have been as bad as I expected it...but it still was nowhere close to the original.

I have heard that there is no Gobstopper, and the accompanying scene at the end with Charlie handing back his to Wonka.
    Is that so?

Anyone else notice that Charlie's grandfather (the one that went with him to the Chocolate Factory) looked and talked just like Ian MacDermid? Every time he was on screen, I kept waiting for him to say "Not from a Jedi!" It's like he was Ian's father or something. I swear the resemblence is uncanny! Are they related, or just from similar areas of England, prone to that dialect?

Just saw it this afternoon. It was pretty good, but I still prefer the original version. The Oompa-Loompa songs in this one just aren't as memorable or catchy. I know they're the original lyrics from the book that Roald Dahl wrote, but Danny Elfman didn't impress me.

I thought the scene immediately after Augustus Gloop gets sucked up the pipe. Everyone's standing around talking about the Oompa-Loompa song.

    (paraphrasing)
    "That seemed rehearsed..."
"How did they already know what was going to happen to him?"
"How did they already put his name in the song?"

Sons were disterbed by the Oompa Loompas. My husband was disapointed in it. I had no disire to see it. I got burned out on the Gene Wilder version as a kid.

Really? I honestly thought the music was fantastic. The song-sequences were the best part of a terrific film..

Elfman displayed a ton of musical range, here...

This is actually one of the rare films for which i'm actually planning on going out and picking up the soundtrack..

I saw the movie just last week, I love it. I think that this film proved to be much better than the first, with a futuristc flare and was presented with a much more childish flare. This also has it's mature parts, but was a wonderful movie for me to take my neices and nephews to.
