ST Chewbacca / Peter Mayhew in Ep. VII

I still think it's a shame they didn't age-up Chewie. That's maybe what looks 'off' about him, standing next to a 70-year-old Han, looking younger if anything!

I'm not sure, guys. Chewie's fur does look slightly a little more blond on the ends. Maybe it's the Wookiee equivalent of starting to go gray?

Trying to age a long lived species like Wookiees is tough, especially since 30 years is nothing in comparison to the same amount of time for a human.

 

I'm constantly amazed that this 'why isn't Chewie grey' issue keeps coming up. This is another universe with all sorts of different species and they aren't all going to have similar lifespans to humans. I mean, honestly, this is like wondering why Gandalf doesn't die of old age in the 60 intervening years between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

 

Well to be fair those who don't read the books might not realise how freakin old the hobbits are. Like Frodo being 50

 

What I find interesting is that there is no new big sidekick alien as part of the new cast. We can see there is a new R2 (BB-8), and Chewie seems to have a considerable screen time in TFA.

I bet he is here to stay the whole ST.

I like that Chewie is not aged. No reason to age him. If they do that, they can't change their mind later, and lots of movies will be made.

I figure this movie is a nice retirement payment to Peter Mayhew. His health ain't great, and this should put money in his pocket (the old movies don't?).

He's done his job of being part of the PR to get people hyped. Giving another link to the old movies.

Maybe that's enough. They don't have to kill him off. He just goes home.

Good article! Kind of surprised by the Daisy Ridley comments.

 

This may be Mayhew's last ride, but I think Chewie will appear throughout the ST. There's a lot of potential in seeing Chewie be a sidekick to Finn or Poe or a new character that is introduced in Episode 8. Also interaction with Lando when Lando appears later in the ST. Perhaps at the end of 9 he parts ways with the other heroes and goes back to Kashyyyk or something, but I'd rather not see a Chewbacca death scene or have him written out of the story before the conclusion of 9.

 

Chewbacca should get his own film. The old Wook is like 200 years old. He lived all kinds of life before meeting Han. Would love to see some of it.

 

I'm thinking JJ may be setting up Asty to eventually take over the Chewie role.

I'd also love to see a Herglic sidekick:

 

I always liked the wookie - BUT at 1:30 seconds of the new trailer - if that's not a lot fof hair I'm not sure what it is Rey is crying over...
