It's also possible that the Chiss are themselves a "chimaera" species, either tinkered-with or cross-bred - as the Yuuzhan Vong and the human-hybrid Sith were; for what it's worth, it seems that descendants of the Sith hybrids, and at least some YV, can concieve naturally.

Part of me wonders if species like Gammorans, Thakkwash, Quarren and Mon Cals were also the result of grotesque genetic tinkering in the ancient past - perhaps the Sith idea of a joke, since we know that Blackhole physically crossbred a Gammorean and a monkey-lizard (rather than simply their DNA) to create "twins"...

We know that the Sith Empire had encountered the Chiss sometime after it was first founded. So perhaps between 10,000 - 25,000 years BBY. If even then, they were a distinct species (distinct enough to be called Chiss, then the Chiss and human evolutionary split would have had to occur several thousands of years before that for such a characteristic to take over the entire population (no way an entire population can change permanently in a short a time), so a long time before the hyperspace wars. It would have taken a long time for humans to make it to the unknown regions back then.

Or they were an experiment, as stated above. Test tube babies, the lot of them. Maybe a joke of the Rakata or one of the other advanced interstellar civilizations. Or, maybe the Kind did something. There's gotta be a reason why the Killiks are picking on the Chiss in The Dark Nest trilogy.

What a fun story idea: Where the Chiss came from.

It's quite possible they were a genetic creation, which would explain the hormonal changes with their rapid maturation, the skin colour and eye differences as compared to normal humans.

But from images and general description, they seem to be human in almost every other way, though (for better or worse, depending on how R-rated you like your stories!) we've never exactly been given an indepth view of their reproductive organs, so everything is speculation.

But if I had to guess, I'd assume a human and a Chiss could reproduce naturally (as genetic coupling is a moot point, since you can pretty much do that with anything). Would be interesting to see some combinations though, like blue skin with blonde hair, or the dark hair and red eyes with a "normal" complexion.

You're insane, but in a good way.

But it is possible that the Chiss civilization was indeed the result of "True Sith" Imperial experimentations thousands of years before the Republic and the Confederacy made first contact with them.

Yay, I can just see it.

Gen'Eessa, half human, half chiss (chuman?) supermodel, with blue black hair, pale blue skin, and pale lavender eyes.

I can just imagine a writer using this description over & over:

"They turned to see a young slender woman approaching. Bewitchingly beautiful, with long sleek black hair cascading down her back, a pale, milky white complexion & deep, fiery red eyes that seemed to glow like hot embers"

"And then suddenly appeared an exact replica of the same woman, as beautiful as the first. They were even better than twins, the man reflected. They were clones."

Would anyone mind telling me what exactly the previous two posts are supposed to mean?

I think it has to do with sarcasm and male fanboy fantasies... ;)

But I'm not sure, since both posters were female.

    hahahaha.

More like how Mary Sues can pop up even among the Chiss (verily a scary thought in itself), who also happen to like cloning and other really fun genetic experiments :)

And just taking the mick out of the way all authors write about their female leads!!! (& the repetitiveness of some authors!!)

Doesn't really have anything to do with the fact that myself & Inara are female, its just a general observation!

Personally, I think we need more female Chiss. We've only seen, what, four or five?

More Wol Cabassites would be nice, too... :p

Edit: Yeah, I thought I detected a hint that in there. Marai'Seuu? [face_mischief]

This article points out something we've all neglected: Chiss bleed red blood. Could this suggest baseline humanity?

Not necessarily. It only means that they have hemoglobin (or another iron-based protein) in their blood carrying oxygen. Remember that nearly all Earth vertibrate animals bleed red, not just humans.

Or we could just go for simplicity and say they are descended from humans, rather then being unrelated and looking identical except for skin tone and eyes.

There's no doubt whatsoever that Chiss are descended from baseline humans. From Star Wars Gamer #5:

"Genetic sampling has recently confirmed that the Chiss are near-Humans, though their evolutionary divergence from baseline Humanity has not been pin-pointed in time or space. Physiologically, the Chiss are quite similar to Humans, with comparable circulatory, neurological, digestive and reproductive systems."

The only question is whether the thousands of years of divergence - it has to be at least that, since the Chiss were present when the current ice age overtook Csilla, and that occurred "several thousand years" ago. The divergences were at least enough to modify their outward features, growth cycle, and metabolism; these last two might preclude compatibility, but by no means are they certain to do so.

(As a side note, Gamer #5 also notes one reason why their skin is blue: "The mineral content in the Chiss homeworld's hydrosphere causes the glacial formations to be a striking blue in color, as opposed to clear or white. This mineral content also contributes to the Chiss' distinctive pigmentation, though it does not appear to offer any notable evolutionary benefits.")

IIRC, the Essential Guide to Alien Species says that the glowing red eyes are caused by a reaction with oxygen.

So, does blue milk have a high mineral content, too?

    :p
