well, it would either have to be something featuring christmas or something you only watch during the season. dunno if that isn't simply the same :D

anyway, the one movie that my family and i always watch on christmas eve is

    Little Lord Fauntleroy

with alec guiness and the sappiest ending and it's all so lovely and i'm really looking forward to it this year. it's just such a tradition!

TCM always shows "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan and Frank Morgan. Stewart and Sullavan starred in four movies together; this is their best one, and it's beautifully done. The acting is perfect; in real life, Stewart had a giant crush on Sullavan, and it shows. Set in Budapest, at Christmas, it concerns two feuding shop clerks, who don't realize they are penpals. Sullavan can be hugely irritating and hugely charming at the same time; I don't know how she did it. Stewart *should* have won Oscar for this performance, in which there's not a hint of mannerism.

A Charlie Brown Christmas would be my favorite cartoon, just barely ahead of Rudolph and the Grinch.

For movies, It's a Wonderful Life can't be topped, though it's somehow lost something now that it's not on non-stop somewhere on cable from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

    So many to mention.

    The Santa Clause movies.
    Elf
    Miracle on 34th Street

    and any more :p

There's something about Christmas movies - maybe it's that they tell stories of hope.

But hey, I like them :D

Does It's A Wonderful Life count?

Also Christmas Vacation is a classic.

    Christmas Vacation is definitely classic.

And It's a Wonderufl Life takes place, primarily, on Christmas Eve. It features George Bailey running thrugh the streets of Bedford Falls yelling Merry Christmas to everyone he sees, including Potter and Bailey Building & Loan Building. That Christmassy enough for you?

    Great thread!

Good Christmas movies that I like to watch during the Holidays are:

    * "A Christmas Carol" - the 1984 George C. Scott TV version is the best rendition of this story, in my opinion. Scott IS Ebenezer Scrooge, and the set designs/costumes/etc. are very big budget for a TV movie. Faithful translation of the original story, as well.

    * "Home Alone" - 1990 - great film. As a kid, who didn't want to be left alone in a big house to do as they pleased - very good concept/story.

    * "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" - as others have said, this is a classic film, and is probably the best movie in the Vacation series. Very funny - Randy Quaid steals the movie as the obnoxious cousin - hilarious.

"A Christmas Story". "You'll shoot you're eye out, kid!"

I'm also partial to "Scrooged". "The ***** hit me with a TOASTER."

White Christmas, as sappy as it is, is still one of my fav's.
Charlie Brown christmas has never been topped
Love to laugh at the Christmas Story
and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is a must watch. Herbie the Dentist and the Bumble. What's not to like? :D

Miracle on 35th street and It's a wonderful Life are two I always end up getting sucked into while surfing.

Edit: Forgot to include the other thing I usually watch.

    The Nutcraker with Barishnikov.

Jingle All the Way in all its cheesy goodness.
Miracle on 34th Street is always a heartwarming experiance.
The Santa Clause is pretty good as long as you ignore the sequels and the elves [face_sick]

"A Christmas Story" (1983) starring Peter Billingsley, Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon.

Another film that is shown every Christmas. It does give a child's-eye view of the holidays...the obsession with certain toys rings true, as does the relationship of the lead with his parents and brother. "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!" is something we've all heard, in one form or another.

Yes, I watch it every year, if only to see that stupid kid stick his tongue on a frozen telephone pole. "I triple dog dare yah!"

Yay! Another Christmas Vaction fan. Best Christmas movie EVER!

The Santa Clause is good and Home Alone as long as you ignore everything after Home Alone 2.

EDIT: I also have a strong suspicion that the forthcomming Navitiy Story will prove to be an abosulely essential Christmas film.

I thought that film was the stupidest most annoying holiday film I'd ever seen.

For me, I have to see the classic cartoon of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and of Mickey's Christmas Carol.

I've always found Mickey too saccharine. The animated "Grinch" OTOH, is a real gem; Boris Karloff's VO is terrific; there's a good song, and the animation is witty and succinct. Avoid the live-action movie, though.
