Just because there is a lawsuit doesn't mean anything. This is not taking a copy of the movie, cutting out the parts and then reselling the movie. Basically this does nothing to the DVD you put into the machine, and is paying someone to skip over the bits you don't like. The lawsuit against them basically says that the director should be able to force you to a chair, keep your eyelids open and make sure you don't fast foward while you watch a movie. I didn't check out the site but I saw a discussion about it on one of the local PBS channels because it is a Utah based company. This is very different from a legal standpoint to some of the other companies because other places edit the DVD and then sell the DVD. This is no different to the fast foward to the next chapter feature on your DVD player, it is just a lot more targeted.

I haven't actually used this, but who hasn't watched a movie on cable that had all the swear words badly dubbed? Personally in a lot of cases I would rather watch an R-rated movie on TV that way because the dialog of Die Hard isn't all that important to me. This is a service for people who want it, people who want all the stuff in there can just watch the DVD without paying for the special DVD and subscription to the service.

I think it's kind of odd, and a waste of money, since you can just fast forward, but whatever. Folks have money to waste, let 'em waste it as they please.

Have you ever tried fast forwarding a sex scene?
    It does NOT help.

I was under the impression one could set their own bookmarks to skip offensive scenes. Least, I've some DVD software that lets me do that.

You can, but you aren't charging money for it. That's where everything becomes "the line." The only argument ClearPlay could use would be "fair use" and it's likely not strong enough for them as an argument (though, to be fair, certainly on more solid legal footing than the first-pass attempt when they were actually reselling modified videos).

So, wait . . . can you use this ClearPlay thing to edit out just plain crappy scenes? Like . . . could I edit out every single exposition scene in the PT?

There is totally a market for that . . . they could just repackage it and sell it under the name "NotCrappyPlay."

You know, one thing on the reviews of this thing is that some people buy it simply because the laser is such high quality - it plays scratched discs with ease. The laser is used to jumping around and stuff, so it works better for crappier discs.

The lawsuit I was referring to was the CleanFlicks version (the actual movie editing):

    http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/ap/20060708/115241712000.html

Presumably there is another one in the works for ClearPlay, which will also infringe on copyright, following the precedent of the 2006 verdict.

Those were different companies doing something different. As the article I cited said, they were shut down back in '06, and the ClearPlay suit was dismissed the year before, because a law passed that same year specified that what ClearPlay does is not a copyright violation.

They just keep going and going and going [face_hypnotized]

Seriously, sex scenes are twice as much fun on fast forward than at regular speed.

So, my little brothers and sisters just watched Total Recall on the ClearPlay on max filtering settings. I only saw the last few minutes, but a lot was cut out. I mean, seriously, you got to see the explosions and like, nothing else, except the occasional very choppy Ahnuld dialogue.

Sorry you had to experience a totally massacred version of what I'm sure is an awesome movie (never seen Total Recall)

I didn't. I've seen the whole three-breasted version. I only caught like the last five minutes.

    Yeah, basically.

Now I need to get Pulp Fiction and see what there is.

    "A Quentin Tarantino Film"

    "PULP FICTION"

    "JOHN TRAVOLTA"

    "SAMUEL L. JACKSON

    "STARRING"

    "JOHN TRAVOLTA VINCENT VEGA"

    "SAMUEL L. JACKSON JULES WINNFIELD"

    "MIRAMAX FILMS © 1994"

I'm sure the Uncomfortable Silence is in there, too
unless Mia's shirt is too revealing... then only Travolta's shots... unless his hair is too long and rebellious... hmm...
wait, didn't I make the Pulp Fiction joke on the first page?
