It isn't awful and does have its moments. It does make up for some of what was missing in the films where Cameron wasn't involved.

    I watched Dark Fate.

This movie did a lot right that Genisys did wrong. Genisys felt like a bad comic book movie, but this movie brought back some of the gravitas of the first two. The fact that it was continuation instead of a reboot immediately elevates it above Genisys (though the soft reboot nature of it still makes it feel a bit redundant, just not as bad). The action was better. Terminators are hard to kill again.

I know the decision to kill John early on was controversial. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I had it spoiled for me a while back, so I wasn't able to have the experience I was supposed to have with the opening of this movie. I like the first two movies quite a bit, so part of me doesn't like the idea of killing off a major character from those movies so unceremoniously. On the other hand, moving the focus away from John really does make sense. The future was changed in T2, so it makes sense that John isn't the future leader anymore via the butterfly effect. He isn't a prophesied hero. He was just in the right place at the right time. In a way, this movie honoured the end of T2 more than any of the other sequels. Fate truly was changed.

Despite being significantly better than Genysis and Salvation, I still had a sense of apathy watching this movie. It never really gripped me. Part of it might be the faults of the movie itself, but I think a larger part is that I've started watching The Sarah Connor Chronicles and I've fallen in love with it. That is my sequel to T2 and because of that it's hard to get invested in an alternate timeline. T2 had a great ending so any sequel to it needs to justify its existence. So far TSCC is the only sequel that felt really justified imo.

The problem with any of the sequels is that they feel more like trying to shoehorn in a story for a cash grab versus letting the story progress naturally.

i still haven't watched this and can't bring myself to, but i started checking out on the terminator franchise long ago. i couldn't pay proper attention to the movies ever since the christian bale one and i agree with the post above... and it's funny because lots of stories are lost in time loops (like probably raised by wolves, my new favorite). i just feel like the terminator franchise is dated and had something to say at a time and ended, and should have been allowed to end. it feels like the terminator movies are just becoming time on doctor who, timey wimey wibbly wobbly whatever! i also don't really get excited about bringing old characters back generally. i would be more interested in a terminator story that doesn't have any of the characters we used to know, but even then, i don't think i can watch it. in my mind the story ended.

James Cameron told the story. The story's done. The rest is moneymaking.
This is the reason I've never watched the movie.

I can understand killing John off and it makes sense. John and Skynet represent a war whose outcome was decided. If a new threat emerges, then a new leader should as well. Unintended consequences of trying to change history. Makes sense.

John no longer being the saviour of humanity makes complete sense, but that doesn't mean they had to kill him. He has knowledge of Terminators, time travel etc., so he could be an asset to the next saviour of humanity - just like Sarah Connor was in Dark Fate. I would have liked that better.

It probably would have still felt like a rehash though.

That's why. If you change the evil, but not the good, you it's a rehash. Plus looking at Sarah's point of view, she felt on some level she screwed up John's childhood. He had no choice in deciding to be the savior of humanity. Dani has a choice. She understands what's at stake and accepts her fate.

I think even when the movie came out the cast and crew couldn't agree with the title "Dark Fate" was. but it's about John being terminated, right? This is the darkest non-Skynet timeline where John dies and Sarah carries on.

Anyway, Carl is my favourite thing about Dark Fate. "Drapes."

The title refers to the idea that John was right and wrong about fate. He was wrong in thinking that there was no actual fate, except for man made ones. Skynet had gotten him with a third T-800, which he had no clue existed. The world survived, but he and Skynet didn't. Now, there is Legion and a much different war. A war that hasn't ended, when Grace and the REV-9 go back in time. However, he was right because Grace tells Dani about her future and Sarah realizes that she is the one who taught her. Thus she can make her own fate by repeating John's training without the burden of raising him.

    It is a dark fate.

So I just finished The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I became really invested in this show and I count it among my favourite TV shows ever made. Because I knew there were only two seasons, I stretched it out by watching an episode a week as if it was currently on air. I heard somewhere that it ended on a cliffhanger, but it wasn't expecting it to be that kind of cliffhanger.

    I'm gonna go cry now.

The Terminator is the best despite being dated because the T-800 is the most terrifying antagonist.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day is a thrill ride, and successfully made the T-800 a Hero.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines has the badass T-X, and we finally get to The War.

Terminator Salvation was a missed opportunity, felt like grundge Mad Max movie. Christian Bale overacted and Dallas Byrce Howard who I like was more machine than wife.

Terminator Genysis did some things right, the opening and future scenes was cool, but making Connor the Terminator & villian was part of a horrible trend in movies at the time.

Terminator Dark Fate was good, if it had only left out Connor being killed as a kid, and putting a woman in his place like he never existed. Katherine Brewster-Connor takes John’s place as leader when John is killed way in the future, she could have been the woman leader they protected as younger girl in the movie.

To me this is how the Terminator franchise ended even though I absolutely loved the Sarah Connor Chronicles:

"Dark Fate" is that film. That's why he was involved. Tim Miller even indicated that he was heavily involved.

Everything after Terminator II sucks. Just like everything after Aliens sucks. I guess James Cameron is really the Terminator.

Nah, even the lesser Alien movies are all interesting/ambitious (barring the useless AVP junk, of course). I love 3 and Covenant, Resurrection's script is bad but Jeunet directs the heck out of it, and Prometheus, while an absolute mess in pretty much every regard, is very interesting conceptually.

As for Terminator goes, the only movie post-T2 that I find to have any merit whatsoever is Dark Fate (and even saying this, Tim Miller is no James Cameron behind the camera). The rest of them are all pretty much unwatchable, on par with the dire AVP stuff.

The conundrum all post T2 films face is that some of T2's greatness came from the "No Fate But What We Make" clashing with the desire to have fate continue enough for sequels, while also dealing with the issue that we both want the Connors to have a happy ending but also find them the best developed protagonists to put back into the conflict.

T3 was just a more fatalistic sequel to T2 that was basically "You can't escape fate." Salvation brought us to the more interesting future conflict we all thought was cool, but struggled with how pessimistic that was mixing with the half-baked idea to replace John Connor with an interloper that they then dumped for being so frustrating. Genisys took the idea of fate vs free will a bit too far without actually changing the formula. Dark Fate is a repetition of the older formula, but now with only Sara as a supporting character because John tragically died.

The SCC maybe hit a sweet spot in terms of actually messing with the formula, the family, and the theme of free will vs fate... but was a tv show on Fox.

I genuinely can't muster up a good thing to say about Rise of the Machines, apart from Stan Winston's effects looking good. The movie's pretty excruciating.

At least when Dark Fate dug up a story with an already perfect ending to follow on from Judgement Day, it dared make a few interesting choices along the way to warrant its own existence. RotM did no such thing.

Yeah, unless they somehow bring the remainder of the Dark Fate trilogy concepts to a series or something (which seems unlikely, given how DF performed at the box office), I suspect Cameron is done with the franchise. And Skydance probably isn't itching to do so at this juncture, either. best we could probably ever hope for at this point is a video game, animated series, or comic book. Would love to see the concepts that film put into motion be fully explored. Would be facsinating to get Cameron's exploration of the nature of AI and the resolution vs humans that they werebuilding to, as well as the sort of reverse-Skynet seeds they may have been planting in DF.

Stripping away T3's borderline parody nature and it's absolutely poor handling of basic story/character continuity, it actually does have a few redeemable elements or ideas (even if they aren't always fully explored). Not enough to save the film overall, but stuff to point at or skip to:

-The idea that, after failing to take out the Connors multiple times, Skynet begins targeting other resistance leaders instead.
-John rejecting his destiny and going off-grid.
-John having to deal with being another Model 101 that is different from Uncle Bob, whom he obviously had a defining emotional attachment to.
-Sending a Terminator with built-in/internal weaponry to bypass the organic limitation.
-The casket shoot-out visual is memorable.
-The crane chase is a legitimately awesome action sequence.
-T-1's are a really cool design.
-"You are terminated!" (mechanical screeeeam!) (boom!)
    -The downer ending.

Salvation is still far, far more satisfying (especially if you ignore the muddy resistance base middle act). But T3 had potential that was just botched in execution. One more revised draft could make it into an actual good movie (though still far behind T1, T2, DF & TSCC). It's not like T5 where any potential it has would require a significant rewrite to fulfill.

For the time being, I'll have to leave the definite Terminator canon timeline as T1, T2, T2-3D: BAT, TSCC, and the DVD menus .
