The youtube vids on his alleged account simply reek of drug-induced faux-intellectualism.

"Im going to give you a new currency"?
"In a few days you know Im conscience dreaming"?

1998 - Tommy Burks, Dem Tenn. State Senator shot by his GOP opponent
2000 - Derwin Brown, DeKalb county Sheriff-elect, shot on orders of the incumbent Sheriff
2003 - James Davis, NYC councilman, shot by what seems to be political rival
2008 - Bill Gwatney, chairman of Arkansas Dem. Party, no motive ever determined
They do happen, although this if she doesn't survive (hopefully she will, the doctors are optomistic) she would be the first member of the House of Representatives killed since Jonestown, I believe.

Sources are indicating, now, that Federal judge John Roll is dead from the shooting.

This is terrible, and I hope that Sarah Palin feels intensely ashamed of herself right now, and that this severely detains the Tea Party'ers. Regardless of whether or not the shooter(s?) were motivated by her "target list" (and I'll believe in the 2012 end-of-the-world scenario if he/they weren't) the map is entirely disgusting, particularly so in hindsight. Likewise is the event held earlier, that was advertised with "Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly."

I hope the surgery went well.

I'd like to blame the Teabaggers, but the guy is clearly just a nutjob who probably would have had a violent outburst regardless of the motivation.

You know what? I'll blame the Tea Party anyway, 'cause **** them.

Well obviously the guy is a nutjob, but the toxic political environment created by the teabags seems to be a contributing factor to his crazy beliefs.

And 2 days ago DailyKOS featured an entry titled "My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi! And is now DEAD to me!" (It's now been removed, and the author's apparently very guilty about it)

You want to find political extremism, there's lots of places to find it. You want to find talk about people being dead and metaphors that are questionable, there's lots of places to find THAT on both sides, too. Maybe, for once, we could try finding out the facts and then seeing where the blame is rather than using this Rush Limbaugh tactic popular in here of deciding that the other side is to blame no matter what.

Nobody in the world would equate an that map with an assassination plot unless they were

    a. a liberal who is paranoid and looking for something to gripe about
    b. a conservative already listening to the White Album backwards for messages.

Would you guys feel the same if they had put, say, "Election Hot Spots" on there with miniature nuclear symbols?

To be sure, Lowbacca there are extremists at both ends of the political spectrum, and its too early to say definitively what this fellow's problem is. But one can't really draw an equivalence between private online contributors at a blogging website to prominent elected officials and former officials who are widely recognized as leaders within their political movements. It is, though, a reminder that extremism, even in defense of what one thinks is "liberty" can be very much a vice.

Unfortunately, I fear that great number of average Americans are total whack jobs. That's the problem. Obviously there is a minority of crazy people who would actually commit a violent crime such as this, but many others would support it. That's the scary part that makes me fear for the future of this country. It is easy to prey on the weak minds of ignorant, uneducated people who respond viscerally to fear tactics--real or imagined. The fact is, these people are not only numerous but also gaining political clout.

I hope this doesn't begin a dark age in American history...

I don't think that it's that hard an idea to follow. The shooter was clearly messed in the head, but it's extremely coincidental that Palin created a map with crosshairs targeting certain people, and one of the targets is shot. I'm not saying that Palin intended for anyone to take the map literally. That doesn't mean that she's free of all responsibility if someone did.

I woke up about about 45 minutes ago, turned on my BlackBerry, did my normal routine (checking ESPN.com, MSNBC.com, etc.) and found about this horrible situation. It's difficult to comprehend why many lives had to end (a ******* 9 year old kid for goodness sake)/be altered forever because of a lone nutjob, and I hate to think of what this could do to the already toxic political discourse in this country.

That's been exactly the point of the criticism all along. We have a burden of mental illness in this country. There are others who simply wax deeply radicalized at one or another point in there life. Both will be with us as long as humanity persists, and both are capable of heinous violence. You're right that no movement or ideology is responsible for the fringe elements that decide to attach themselves to the cause. However, it is absolutely the burden of those in leadership to recognize that not all their listeners can tell the difference between a rhetorical flourish and literal instructions, and temper their remarks accordingly.

No one should ignore that by choosing to engage in violent rhetoric or parrot the vocabulary of the conspiratorial fringe just because it excites supporters or grabs headlines. Regardless of whether something bad comes of it or not, I have a hard time seeing how someone could be qualified for public office when they show such disregard for the well being of some of their most vulnerable adherents.

I don't appreciate being made fun of for a serious comment. After reading the reports surrounding the incident, Tea Partyers and other conservative representatives have been using violent rhetoric to push their political agendas. Clearly this has influenced ignorant, uneducated, and terrified whack jobs to support acts of violence in lieu of public debate. It's sad and troubling.

Thanks for making these boards so pleasant to be a part of and responding with sarcasm.

I think he was referring to all the idiots who think that the apocalypse is coming because some birds fell from the sky and some water-dwelling animals washed up on shore. That is, agreeing with you.

EDIT: Oh, never mind. I didn't see the "dark age" part.

I fail to see how this incident provides evidence that "many Americans" would support such violence, or that these same people are gaining "political clout." I think that is just unnecessary paranoia and a completely counterproductive attitude.

For what it's worth, it seems like the guy had no reason to be inspired by the Tea Party or Sarah Palin or whatever. Yeah, that would be convenient, but one of his former acquaintances is painting him as a radical leftist pothead recluse who was obsessed with the Mayan 2012 prophecy. The dude was crazy.

The point of my earlier comment was to remind ourselves not to jump to any radical conclusions without knowing nearly enough about this story.

Stuff like this irks me. What does Sarah Palin have to do with today's shooting? We still don't understand the shooter's motives, we have no proof he was a Teaparty nutjob who was influenced by anything Sarah Palin said. All that website does is point fingers. Yes, Palin is foolish for using gun references as part of her political discourse, but for goodness sake, wait for the facts before you start associating blame.
