Hello fellow EU aficionados! For today’s Update Day, I want to talk about the nature of crossovers and particularly how their appearances in the EU affected the development of Supernatural Encounters.

Love 'em, hate 'em, or feel indifferent to them, crossovers have been part of genre fiction since at least 1909, when L. Frank Baum brought the protagonists from most of his various fantasy novels into the climatic ending of The Road to Oz, the fifth Oz book. Irrespective of whether or not this was a clever way for him to market his non-Oz books, it was a momentous occasion that opened up the world of Oz to a larger universe and marked the start of the crossover. As with his use of social commentary, Baum understood how to make them organic to the story, comprehensible to readers who hadn't read the works being crossed over, but rewarding to those who had.

Most of us are familiar with crossovers from comic-books, where it's ubiquitously used by DC and Marvel (and others) to widen the mythology and (some will say crassly) sell more comics. I never liked crossovers much. I wasn't a superhero fan growing up. Beyond Star Wars, my interests ran to the darker side of the genre, and in the comics world at that time, that meant Swamp Thing (had I been older, I'd have gravitated to EC comics). So I didn't care for it when Batman, Poison Ivy, Solomon Grundy, or worse, Superman, made an appearance in the title. I didn't want Swamp Thing to be part of the DC Universe. I didn't want anything that would take away from the balls-to-the-wall weird horror stuff that Len Wein, Alan Moore, and Nancy Collins were doing (referring to my three favorite writers on the series). It wasn't until many years later that I came to appreciate the larger world that Swampy was a part of.

With Star Wars in the early days, there were a few crossovers, but most were under the radar. Braxas from Marvel Star Wars #89 is the most overt, as he’s clearly intended to be the same race as ET (an Asogian), but was colored differently and put in a wheelchair to slightly mask that fact. It was a clever move on Ann Nocenti’s part, but she perhaps needn’t have gone to such lengths given that Lucas loved the idea of ET being part of Star Wars galaxy, and overtly made that crossover in The Phantom Menace.

The modern EU is rife with under-the-radar crossovers and a few obvious ones. With Star Wars, we have that rare example of crossovers not being done for commercial reasons but because the authors were fans of these universes and felt they could work together in some way, shape, or form, and that gives them a measure of artistic integrity. Additionally, Robert J. Sawyer’s unpublished Alien Exodus story brought together many of Lucas’ films under one umbrella, and that was an approach I wanted to honor.

The question of how to deal with crossovers was something I spent considerable time mulling over. I couldn’t just ignore them as if they weren’t there, but nor did I want to dogmatically insist on their inclusion. Finally, I came up with a solution that I think will please everyone regardless of where you stand on the issue.

To help you understand the way Supernatural Encounters approaches crossovers, what I call the Grand Unification Theory, I’ll simply quote from the endnotes in this section:

There are several ways of understanding and interpreting crossovers that will allow fans to make their own determination as to what works best for them. I utilize four different approaches to the issue, which is noted here.

The Methodology of Interpreting Crossovers:
1. Coincidental: The events bear similarities, but are not the same.
2. Relational: The events represent a version of that universe, but are not exactly as depicted in the literature, film, or television series (which might be in-universe novels or holodramas).
3. Congruity: The events represent the very same events as depicted in the literature, film, or television series. Note that this doesn’t mean that the characters or narrator are necessarily correct about everything they conclude.
4. Some-or-All of the Above: Fans can determine for themselves what works best for them in each given scenario. This allows us to pick and choose on a case-by-case basis.

The Grand Unification Theory is meant to provide potentialities for fans to have fun with, whether in their own imaginations, RPG adventures, stories, artwork, etc. The Skyriver galaxy is mammoth and its history is long and old; and as much as is revealed in SE, there’s room to spare for much more.

So, there you have it. Make of it what you will!

Quick progress update: I’m at the end of Chapter 35: The Enigma of Evil (yes, the chapter numbers have been slightly modified again), and am proofing through Queen Lorna’s tragic tale as the target of the Sethan’s plot to produce a uniquely diabolical heir. This short vignette touches on the ancient history of Atrisia, Alderaan, and Naboo. Following this chapter, there’s a chapter on the history of the Anzati, and an interlude; then I start proofing Book IV, which kicks off the Empyrean Wars. This will likely mark a slower process, as the chapters become longer and multi-sectional.

I was just thinking about what the upcoming edition might, if anything, have to say about whatever Sidious' plans were for using the Old Ones tech and knowledge, as there are a few tidbits about it. Posting cloaked ships to guard Korriban, bombing Keeper's World, sending Thrawn and others into the Unknown Regions, storing Charon and Otherspace tech inside Mount Tantiss, attempting to genocide the Oswaft (they were an ancient race), and apparently feeling threatened by the Sharu:

It's fun...the Old Gods lure mortals with the prospect of becoming one of them and upon agreeing try to take over mortals as mortals try to resist and remain themselves and become a New God. Like in the ROTS naming ceremony where the Sith name seems to be given from some entity and a Sith is not just the former self gone dark but more, like posessed and merged with the old self.

Palpatine remained himself in battle with whoever tried to take him over for a long time but by the ST he was all "All the Sith" posessed, at least at TROS end when weak enough to need the posession against the Dyad. Beforehand he may even up till TROS have been himself. Anakin as Vader never ceded full control to his posessor but rather on and off was trapped within himself. Kylo Ren never became a Sith and did not take a Sith name for a reason. Also Palpatine intended to not have an apprentice possessed by an Old God... rather as his own vessel only.

Maybe that also explains why Palpatine is the epitome of all the Sith before him, but not as wild powerwise as Vitiate and some precedessors. Where those gave in to posession, he never fully did and was strong enough as a mortal to take some power and withold himself from the Old Gods. He was stronger than his precedessors, but due to posession but own will.
In a way he was needed to end the threat and return balance, as he tried to cheat the Old Gods, and managed it long enough, till the heroes, Chosen Ones and the likes could end him and break the endless chain of Old Gods returning in new bodies via bodyhopping Sith lineage.

Imagine the Sith as a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde style relationship with their posessing Old Gods. That'd explain their level of evil monologues and talking to themselves at least! And as giving in to these dark entities and gods means truly loosing oneself, no wonder they fear that and also the Jedi equivalent of Ghosting and joining the Force fully as they know it all as entities and gods and think Jedi are ignorant to give themselves up to something pretending to be just a Force. Of course, misunderstandings at the core of the divide again. As Jedi may not believe in or account for the Old entities their Sith brothers and sisters battle despite some reverence, as well as the Sith do not believe in an entity free Force above or between it all thinking their Jedi misguided.

For something as truly evil as an Old One, I think they'd gain the most demonic satisfaction from seeing mortals commit atrocities they themselves had never even done. No need for possession at all. Just a little whispering in the ole degrading noggin and let the dark nature of the Force take it's course...

Update Day!
Progress Report: I’m 20 pages away from being at the halfway point! One of you guys can probably better recall when I started proofing the final draft and extrapolate how long it’ll take me to get through the second half. I remain excited as I go through it! To finally see it in its nearly-completed state is just very cool because there’s been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears poured into it. I’m looking forward to jumping into the second half!
Some of the content I’ve recently been reading involves the Teezl, Seoul 5, the Sumrians, the Silentium, the Abominor, Skaith, a Sith who turns against his kind, the start of troubles on Andowyne, the end of the Xylan Empire, the undersea battles between Daritha Trayus and the Warriors of the Deep; and the creepy origins of the Bando Gora. Today, I move onto Typhojem’s breaching of the gates…
But today, I also wanted to talk about one of the reasons that I love the prequels, which is something I don’t think I’ve ever discussed with you guys.
So among the things about the Star Wars prequel trilogy that I find so interesting is its profundity and interspersed wisdom. These films are more philosophical and reflective than the original three (which have a different charm), presenting a tonal departure that not everyone was able to bridge and which some needed time to process before coming to appreciate. And if you haven’t yet, that’s OK too. Different strokes and all…
But there’s been a spate of disingenuous criticism recently that argues that Star Wars has never been anything but dumb, sci-fi action flicks. Youtuber Thor Skywalker did a great takedown of this argument (he’s one of the most measured critics of Star Wars content that I’ve seen online), which got me thinking about what aspects of the films I think are worthy of deeper exploration. And there’s quite a lot! But I’ll focus on just one today.
One of my favorite lines from Star Wars is this Qui-Gon Jinn quote to young Anakin, which contains a few layers of meaning that anyone can apply to their lives and benefit from:
“Always remember. Your focus determines your reality.”
Qui-Gon had earlier told Obi-Wan to “Keep your concentration on the here and now where it belongs,” and this is part of what his advice to Anakin meant.
The ability to stay focused is important if we want to accomplish anything in life. Whatever projects you endeavor upon, expect there to be distractions in numerous forms along the way. Some are important and unavoidable and will have to be dealt with before we can return to the task we’ve set ourselves on. Others are distractions of our own making: the temptations of social media, smart phones, television, general boredom, or restlessness. Rather than succumb to them, we can take control by scheduling breaks for food, exercise, and mental and physical rest before returning to our work.
But Qui-Gon’s quote has even greater depth because it talks about the different things one might focus on that will “determine our reality.” This is an acknowledgement of paradox. To paraphrase science-fiction author and TESB screenwriter Leigh Brackett, the world is both absolutely terrible and perfectly wonderful. Both of those statements are true despite seeming to be contradictory. The truth is that life is paradoxical and because of that it can be difficult to navigate and know where and what to focus on.
Anakin, like many young people, sees possibilities and ideas and is filled with hope and joyful expectation, which he achieves because of his determination and developing skills. But also like many who grow up, Anakin loses those good traits. Hardened and tired from the war, misgivings and mistrust come to replace hope. Frustration and anger come to replace joyful expectation. Determination gives way to an impatient desire for domination.
In large part, this is due to what Chancellor Palpatine had been feeding him over years.
But Palpatine wasn’t Anakin’s first bad master. Watto was also greedy, deceptive, and manipulative. But Watto was more obvious and Anakin recognized those traits in him. But even more important than that, Anakin’s focus was firmly on the positive. He wasn’t blind to his situation, but he accepted it for what it was and made the best of things, knowing he’d somehow find a way to fix it.
Similarly, if we remain focused on what is positive and noble and good, and are determined to see things through, we’ll more often than not have a joyful and hopeful outlook as we go through life. To choose that path doesn’t mean we bury our heads in the sand or ignore the darker aspects of reality. It means seeing what’s bad or broken, acknowledging it, doing what we can to help (if it’s within our power), and then moving on. In other words, we don’t remain in a dark, angry, or embittered state.
Had Anakin paid better heed to Qui-Gon’s warning and kept his focus on the light, things would’ve turned out quite differently for him. Instead, trusting the wrong person and losing focus, he remained ignorant of the fact that the authority figure he’d put his faith in was twisting the truth with just the right amount of insinuation, fabrication, and accusation, manufactured to create a response in Anakin, to turn him bitter, resentful, and cynical.
This changed Anakin’s focus so drastically that he now only saw bad motives, magnifying the imperfections and mistakes of others, and feeling something lacking in himself, believing it to be power. What he was missing was something he lost from when he was young: joy. At a time when he should’ve been at his happiest—with a child on the way and the war nearing its end—Anakin was at his unhappiest. This reality caused by an unhealthy focus resulted in him being severed from his loved ones and the community that had reared him.
There’s quite a bit to unpack here, and I’ll leave that to others, but I find it fascinating that this is but one of several cautionary tales that viewers can extract from the prequels.
Now it’s perfectly fine if someone doesn’t choose to delve into a movie’s thematic layers, but to argue that they’re not there and that the Star Wars films are just big, dumb sci-fi action flicks is either a reflection of the critic’s own shallowness and immaturity, a form of trolling, or an attempt to denigrate something that they don’t really like or understand.
Don’t let anyone judge or put down your fandom. We connect to different things for different reasons, but it’s because we’re drawn to something intrinsically valuable it, usually unconscious at first, and then consciously later. By the same token, let’s not be people who put down other fans or fandoms that we don’t connect to, or which we think have been corrupted. Life is short. We find joy where we can. Give the benefit of the doubt to something new. There are those who would profit from spreading hate and doubt and who have ulterior motives for doing so. By the same token, it’s absolutely not “toxic” to hold something to a higher standard and expect it to deliver. That’s called critical thinking, but being balanced means not attacking others who may not see the giant flaws that we see.

Update Day: So I'm on page 570 today, cruising, and a few pages away from Book VI--which begins the Twilight Wars where we see the splitting of the Sith into factions, most significantly, the Stygian Sith in the Esstran Sector and the True Sith in the Unknown Regions, and delve deep into the origins of the Hundred Year Darkness.

As regards the recent chatter as to SE's canonicity, I'm not going to get into any he-said-she-said drama. You guys have already seen the emails that I sent some time ago, which is sufficient for you to decide for yourselves. In a world of constant controversy and anger, our hobbies and communities centered on them should be an escape from that, places that are fun, interesting, and engaging, and that's how I intend to continue operating.

At the risk of opening a whole can of worms, I really don't see how anyone can argue that Supernatural Encounters can be considered to be a part of any Star Wars "canon" that exists outside of our own heads. Nor do I see why the distinction between "canon" and "non-canon" matters here. A stamp of approval (via tweet, I guess?) from Lucasfilm Limited wouldn't really mean much considering it's not going to have any actual influence on future official stories anyway. It would just make a lot of Wookieepedia editors extremely happy/busy.

The case was laid out by some of the editors who worked on the project in two lengthy discussion videos here and here, but at this point I can't really remember any of the details.

There have been half a dozen Tweets between Pablo, Leland, and Matt Martin to this effect over the past year or so.
Respectfully to the fans who love this project, it's fanfiction. You're free to love it as much as I love Publius's Test of Wills or blank101's Son of Suns trilogy, but they aren't official or licensed and neither is Supernatural Encounters.
I'm glad the word on this is starting to spread.

I do get where the confusion comes from, though - some iteration of it was planned to be official at one point, and Joe said he has a licensing agreement approved by, among others, Pablo... which Pablo later said he couldn't remember signing off on.

I was quite touched by what Joe said today, though - online fandom has become kind of a miserable place for the past few years.

At the risk of opening a whole can of worms, I really don't see how anyone can argue that Supernatural Encounters can be considered to be a part of any Star Wars "canon" that exists outside of our own heads. Nor do I see why the distinction between "canon" and "non-canon" matters here. A stamp of approval (via tweet, I guess?) from Lucasfilm Limited wouldn't really mean much considering it's not going to have any actual influence on future official stories anyway. It would just make a lot of Wookieepedia editors extremely happy/busy.

I dunno they've mentioned Typhojem and The immortal Gods of the Sith just recently . And Seeing how theres various force cults in phase ii we can get more mentions of stuff from it
