Ronan did read the Thomas/Rachel paper, but IIRC she was quickly dismissed.

you may be onto something and when you read all the fighting/parkour stuff she is supposed to do in this movie, they could have easily casted Chloe directly as the actress. [face_tee_hee]

This is the biggest key in the whole thing; George Lucas, Lucasfilm, Ltd., Disney, JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy all know how big of a gamble having females as the leads in the Star Wars franchise moving forward (a fact which I love and embrace 110%) We all need to realize "Rogue One" & "The Force Awakens" are the future and by that the context of information, the storytelling, the actors and actresses chosen and the overall production needs to be spot on (after what the prequels did - as in the view of the public) Daisy Ridley wouldn't not had been chosen for this role if Disney and Kathleen Kennedy didn't have absolute faith in the story or her. Ridley is the "chosen one" of the franchise.

Whether she is a Skywalker or Solo at this point doesn't matter; what matters is she is the chosen one to carry this franchise forward and whatever her destiny is we all need to embrace it (Solo, Skywalker or otherwise)

It was obviously a very long and drawn out auditioning process, for both the Finn and Rey characters. Oscar Isaac seemed like an easier decision since he's a more established actor. The other question is which character they were potentially trying to get Cumberbatch, Oldman or possibly Michael Fassbender for.

Let's face it, SW fandom is dominated by males and the environment can be rather sexist/unwelcoming towards women. Putting a young woman at the center of their beloved franchise is a risk, especially since there are currently so few female led action franchises and pretty much zero if you discount YA adaptations.

And in general, casting any "lead" of a huge franchise like this is VERY important. Wonder how the MCU would look now if RDJ was never cast in the first Iron Man.

Just the simple reaction of fans to the possibility of a black lead character is enough to tell you that SW fandom isn't quite as progressive as we'd like it to be, and this will be the first time ever the franchise isn't led by a white male.

At the end of the day, after all of us go super crazy and they are moping the collective drool from us in the theaters, this movie is an investment that Disney paid a heck of lot of money for and their shareholders want to get a return on their investment. Hollywood, at it's core, no matter how much they hate to admit it, is a business. And they are just adverse to taking risky chances as any other company on Wall Street.

Daisy is a risk, a untried actress, who is going to be the face of Star Wars for years to come, billions in movie, merchandizing, books and endorsements are on the line. If the so-call average movie go doesn't buy the idea of a leading lady who is not a 'typical' leading lady, it could damage the Star Wars name.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for the direction they are going but it is still a risk with a billion dollar price tag hanging over it's head.

Also we have to remember that unlike Katniss or Wonder Woman, Daisy's character does not exist on the page and does not have an existing fanbase (which the franchise itself has, but the character could be a hit or a flop at this point, no one knows yet). She maybe related to some characters we know, but she herself is not an adapted character. They're basically creating this character from scratch with an unknown actress at the center. Even Hayden Christensen/Jake Lloyd were playing a character that audiences were already familiar with.

We know his ultimate story arc, we've seen multiple actors portray that character already. It's like Fassbender and McAvoy taking over the Magneto and Prof X roles.

Please, can we keep the SJW nonsense about how all male nerds are misogynistic *******s out of this. Pretty please? It's annoying and moronic enough on social media as it is.

Normal, average people don't care about what sex the characters have, they care about enjoying the story.

My guess is Oldman was considered for Uber, Cumberbatch was considered for Gleeson's role (with promise of expanded role in sequels) and Fassbender read for Poe.

But now the rumor is that Gleeson's character dies in this one.. Cumberbatch definitely could've gone up for the Uber role too since he also worked mo-cap on The Hobbit (if that is what the character demands), so he shares a similarity with Andy Serkis.

if the story regarding Rey being a Solo is true, the fond farewell of Leia could have this kind of dialogue:

Rey: The doids decoded the location to the great Jedi warrior Luke Skywalker and I will leave to learn the ways of the force.
Leia: That's wonderful and by the way I have to tell you something important. I am your mother. The old pirat which was just killed was your father. The guy with the terrifying mask who killed your father is your brother. The old and crazy Jedi you are visiting is your uncle. And everything was the fault of your grandfather, Darth Vader!
Rey:....speechless and terrified putting on Darth Vaders mask.

    Whoa, burying the lede much?

So the big twist in the film isn't that Kylo and Rey are children of Han & Leia... it's that Rey is a man! [face_laugh]

I don't think these women particularly look exactly alike either, however, they are mother and daughter. (same with my wife and daughter)

My point is the daughter can get features from the father and even therefore look like both the mother and father.

A resemblance can be construed without having to be identical twins.

Also Fisher and Portman don't resemble whatsoever. IMHO[IMG]

Any actor could play Vader in the suit. Just make sure they're strapping. But there's only ONE actor who can voice Vader. Would you be happy with another actor voicing Vader? The Prof X role is a poor comparison.

A minority, but a vocal minority. Saw the "Kira confirmed!" story on the "Star Wars Episode VII News" page on FB yesterday, and only one idiot was on there saying "I hope she's not the Luke of the new trilogy". He didn't clarify why he hoped she isn't the "Luke" of the ST, but the easy assumption is because of gender. He may have just been a troll, and only one person took the bait.
