This is such a terrible thing to happen anytime, but imagine...right before the Holidays? How awful...

My thoughts and prayers go out to the familes and loved ones of those lost on that tragic day. :(

    Once again...

I couldnt care less that this guy is dead, Pantera are the biggest bunch of racists ever. Their lead singer is a cracker, end of story.
    And dont PPOR me:

They were also angry, especially when Anselmo is alleged to have told his own head of security to, "Tell the n!99ers to stop eyeballing me."

    and

Roberts was attending her sixth Pantera show and could not believe she had actually heard Anselmo say, "This is our world, and tonight is a white thing."

RIP to the innocent people who died in there.

And dont say my post is insensitive, because when ODB died, you all said the same stuff about him. Double standards...

WU TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN

    You're way off topic, sir.

    [face_plain]

We're not talking about Phil here. We're talking about Darrell. Huge difference.

And like was stated above, we're talking about Darrell, not Phil. *rolls eyes*

Phil was the racist, not Dimebag.

Truth hurts. You judged Ol' Dirty without knowing him. He was guilty by association to you. So is this guy for me.
Typical racism in the JC. If this was a shooting in a hiphop club, you would not be mourning.
    You mad?

I've too have heard rumblings about Phil being a racist, and I don't know if it's true or not.

At any rate, I feel it's completely off-topic because I've never heard anything except respect for Darrell both as a musician and as a genuinely nice person. He will be missed by many.

Oh, and Old Dumb Bastard - the welfare and food stamps thief - shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as a great talent like Darrell.

This is so sad. The only clubs I go to are heavy metal/death clubs and I've never been afraid. Sheesh my brother use to be in a death metal band and I was never worried about him getting hurt.

Heres what the Washington Post is reporting. I'll post the whole thing since they often only allow articles to be viewed by members.

Heavy Metal Guitarist Gunned Down During Concert
Former Member of Pantera, 3 Others Killed in Ohio Night Club

    By Jay Cohen
    The Associated Press
    Thursday, December 9, 2004; 2:18 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A gunman charged onstage at a nightclub and opened fire on the band and crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death, authorities said.

The gunman had a hostage in a headlock and appeared to be preparing to kill him when the officer hit him in the face with a rifle, a witness and police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said. The hostage escaped uninjured, Mull said.

Two other people were hospitalized. Police said one was in intensive care and the other was stable.

Police identified the gunman as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, 25 miles northwest of Columbus. Police said they had no information on a motive or any connection to Abbott or his band, the Texas-based group Damageplan.

Damageplan had just begun its first song at Alrosa Villa club Wednesday night when the gunman climbed onstage, started yelling and shot Abbott five or six times at point-blank range, witness Chris Couch said.

Mull said the gunman's exact statement was unclear because of the loud music. He said some witnesses reported hearing an accusation about Abbott breaking up his former band, thrash-rock pioneer Pantera, but police could not confirm whether the speaker was the gunman or a fan.

Police believe there were earlier threats against the band, Mull said. He declined to give specifics.

Witnesses said the man, who was wearing a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey jersey over a hooded sweat shirt, jumped an 8-foot wooden fence and was being followed through the crowd by club security.

After firing on the guitarist, the gunman shot a bouncer who had pulled him off the musician, while fans surged toward the exit, said Couch, 22. The gunman then fired into the crowd of more than 250 people, Mull said.

Mull said Officer James D. Niggemeyer, patrolling nearby, arrived within two minutes of hearing the call. Niggemeyer, 31, saw one person lying dead and the suspect holding onto another "pretty much in a headlock," Mull said.

He said the hostage, "probably a fan, maybe someone who worked with the band," was able to maneuver out of the way before the officer fired.

    Mull praised Niggemeyer's response.

"If the officer wasn't as close as he was, I think this would have been a lot worse," he said. "It was a chaotic scene, just a horrific scene."

Besides Abbott and Gale, police identified the dead as Nathan Bray, 23; Erin Halk, 29, and Jeff Thompson, 40.

Bray's family said the suburban Grove City man was a Damageplan fan. Halk worked for the club loading band equipment, said the club's lighting designer, Brian Kozicki. Thompson's last known address was in Texas, police said.

Couch said he believed the shooter had a plan. "It was definitely a grudge. It was against something," he said.

Mull said he believed there was amateur video that officers could view for clues but that police had no answers yet. "We may never know a motive for this, unless he left a note," Mull said.

Gale has a minor police record in Marysville, said Police Chief Floyd Golden. He was pulled over for driving with a suspended license last month.

The tall, physically imposing Gale hung out at Bears Den Tattoo Studio, staring at people and trying to get them to talk about music and bands, manager Lucas Bender said.

"He's not wanted," Bender said. "The most pointless conversations."

The news with Peter Jennings had a report on this tonight. They said it "opened a window on the violence in these type of clubs" then they showed a video of a supposed fist fight, which wasn't a fist fight to my eyes, it was a guy moshing, rather badly.

Very classy Darthboy. Remind me to take a crap on your parents grave when they die. I'll make sure I'll eat lots of corn.

This hit particularly close to home because the Alrosa Villa is less than 15 minutes drive from my brother's house. He and I went to the Alrosa last summer to see 311 and the White Stripes. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear such a thing, one it being so close to my brother and his 10-month old baby. Two, it's such a pointless and meaningless waste of life. It seems no one gives a crap about human life anymore.

A friend of mine who works for the newspaper in Columbus says there appears to be no motive. No one at the show recalls there any ruckus before the shooting. The dude just pulled out a gun and started firing. The toxicology report on the shooter won't be back until next week at the earliest.

Seein' this story on the front page of the newspaper this morning brought tears to my eyes. Literally. I was--and still am--in complete and utter shock.

Someone as brilliant--and seemingly good-natured & down-to-earth--as Dimebag doesn't deserve to die like this. What a tragedy.

Another ****ed-up tidbit about this whole deal is that it was the exact day...and almost the exact time...of the John Lennon shooting 24 years ago. Crazy.

Also, the dude was supposedly screaming at Dimebag before he shot him...blaming him for breaking Pantera up. Wasn't that one of the main catalysts for Lennon being shot (for being the reason the Beatles split)? I could be wrong.

I guess...if one wants to look at this in a positive light...we can always go back and listen to the wonderful music that he helped to create, and watch the Pantera DVD to see how much he enjoyed life. The dude definitely didn't waste a second of it. He lived life to the fullest--that's for ****ing sure.

And he also died doing what he loved to do...on stage with a guitar in his hand...rocking his ****ing balls off.

I love Pantera and Damageplan...and I'm so happy I was able to see Pantera perform before they broke up. One of the best and most brutal shows I've ever seen.

    R.I.P. Dime

    :(

I just read in another article about the shooting that the man who shot Dimebag was an employee of Dean guitars. It also says that Dime had just signed an endorsement deal with Dean two weeks ago.

Weird. The Dean site's down right now. I was there a few weeks ago and there was a little something up about them getting Dime's endorsement. There's supposed to be a whole Dime line coming out at the winter NAMM in January. I don't think any guitarist of the last decade has endorsed more product than Dime. He had numerous ads in every guitar mag issue - DR strings, his Crybaby wah, Washburn sigs, the Korg Toneworks thing. You could do a book just on his endorsements. Actually, I'd like to see that book 'cause the ads were usually pretty colorful.

I never listened to Pantera. I just know the guy from guitar mag ads, columns, and interviews. He always seemed like a cool guy from the things he wrote. I remember the first thing I read of his was a "desert island discs" thing where he was talking about how he thought Bonnie Raitt played her ass off.

I saw Pantera live twice and was lucky enough to meet Dimebag once. He was such a very friendly and cool guy. I'm still in shock. Not only one of the world's best (if not THE best) Metal guitar player, but he always had a smile on his face. Rest in peace brother, you will be missed.

I'm sure him and John Lennon are up there jamming in Heaven!
