"Typical racism in the JC." - darth_boy

I think implying racism had anything to do with how people felt about the death of ODB is completely below the belt and tasteless.

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that folks didn't feel much sympathy for that man's death due to one thing: CHARACTER. Take a look at ODB's track-record. He definitely wasn't a saint...and for anyone to think so is fooling themselves. Sure, Dimebag wasn't perfect either...none of us are...but he didn't have the bad rep that ODB had...and that is evoked in how his death is taken. Can it be construed as unfair? Sure...but that's human nature. People respect integrity and honesty...and unfortunately for ODB, he didn't portray those types of values in his public (and--most-likely--his personal) life...resulting in not getting much sympathy when he passed away. It has NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE. Period. I'm sure there was just as much descension in sympathy that came from the African-American community, too.

Also, getting brutally murdered...to the point of being shot five times in the head at point-blank range...is considered to be a tad more tragic. Mainly due to the brutality of it all. Is collapsing and dying tragic? Sure. But not at this scale.

The amount of disdain and ignorance you've shown in this thread (mainly because folks didn't agree with your opinion in a different thread...which is the epitome of childishness) is beyond sickening...and I hope that that is not the way you feel in real life. If so, I pity you. Seriously.

    That pic friggin' rocks.

I dig the pic that is up over at Damageplan's website, too...

RoadRunnerRecords.com has posted some statements from some of their artists...and will be posting more as they become available. Here they are:

"I lost a really good friend on my 31st birthday. Dimebag was the kind of guy you could hang out with for 2 seconds and feel like you knew him your whole life. He made you laugh, made you drink, but most of all made you feel special. I'm really really going to miss him, but the one thing we will always have is his music."

I immediately broke into tears when I heard the confirmation. Dime's music gave me so much to live for when I was younger and he truly changed the face of metal with his unique style of guitar playing. There isn't a metal band I know that hasn't borrowed a riff or three from him. My heart goes out to the Abbot family, their friends and all of the fans who had to witness this tragedy in Columbus."

He was a man who helped inspire countless numbers of players, fans, and people in general, including me. It's a terrifying feeling that now at concerts, at the place that we seek our release from the everyday world we want to escape from, our heroes are being murdered. My heart goes out to the Abbott family: Dimebag Darrell Abbott was a man of legendary and heroic status, but before all that, Darrell was and always will be a brother and a son we all mourn today."

I was blown away when I heard the news today at work. This is a terrible tragedy for the music world weather you were a fan or not. Dimebag was a helluva guitarist and from all accounts I've read, a really nice guy.

It honestlly doesn't surprise me it happened where it did. I have been to that veue numerous times. I was almost at the show last night had it not been for me closing and my buddy having a final today.

Anyway, the security there is, in a word, horrible. There's no pat downs or metal detectors and theres no barricade or security between the stage and the fans. It's a really great place for a show because it's so small and personal, but the security is almost non-existant.

    R.I.P. Darrell.....we'll miss you :_|

I'm scared to death to go to concerts now.

Slash said in an interview he's scared that someone might come after him for "breaking" guns n roses up and until 2 days ago it could of happened to him and he'd never suspect anything.

Listened to a little Pantera in the mid-90's, but wasn't a fan. However, I empathize with the fans of Pantera and Damage Plan.

Peace to the family and fans of this beloved and trailblazing musician.

I have heard so much Pantera and Damage Plan over the past two days. It really just tears me up that Dimebag is gone. The fact that we will never hear a new riff from him again is a serious loss to metal everywhere.

I heard about it yesterday, and couldn't believe it. Today as I've been listening to Pantera, the more music I hear, the angrier about this I get. In addition to being a great guitarist and songwriter, he always seemed like a genuinely good guy, and he also seemed to appreciate his fans a hell of a lot. Not every so-called "artist" can have that said about them.

I'm sure gonna miss Darrell, and I hope the Abbott family can get through this terrible time. I feel so bad for Vinnie Paul, since he probably saw his li'l bro get killed right in front of him.

As for the motherless **** that killed him, he got exactly what he deserved. I usually have respect for the dead, but I hope the fans got a hold of his worthless corpse after he got shot and pummelled it beyond recognition. His mother doesn't deserve an open-casket funeral.

R.I.P. Dime. You won't be forgotten.

The more I read about this, the more it seems eerily similar to the Lennon shooting. Apparently the shooter had the same mental issues that Mark David Chapman had.

A friend of mine at work is from Columbus, and grew up with the fan that was killed. He's been to that club a hundred times.

I wasn't a huge Pantera fan, but if you play rock guitar you're definately aware of just how good Darrell was. There would never have been all these new hardcore bands if there was no Pantera.

i first heard this yesterday at 5am when i was driving to work and had to pull over to the side of the road. this was the last thing i ever wanted to hear. Ive been a fan of his since the Vulgar Display of Power album and i agree that he was one of the most talented musicians in all of Rock history. Hes the kind of guy everyone who met loved. the world is a sadder place with out him...

I would like to think hes up in heaven partying it up and rockin with Hendrix, Lennon, Rhodes, Bonham, and Morisson...

Damage Plan was also slated to play at 94.7's (In chicago) Nutcracker 2004. It was a charity event for Toys For Tots. this took place this morning...to which was dedicated to the memory of Dime. Disturbed showed up too and gave a good speach about Darrel.

    He will be missed

Rest in Peace Dimebag. This Blacktooth is for you!

    That's tragic.

On the other hand, I hate Pantera with a passion so I don't really care either.

    But it's tragic.

Why did you even bother posting? Show some respect, please.

I couldnt care less that this guy is dead, Pantera are the biggest bunch of racists ever. Their lead singer is a cracker, end of story.
    And dont PPOR me:

The most ignorant thing I've ever seen. You know NOTHING.

A black girl wrote a letter to Guitar World once. I wish I still had the issue. She wrote in her letter about the supposed "racism" of Anselmo. She and her friend attended a Pantera show several years ago.

They were supposed to have received backstage passes, but were someonhow screwed over. She wrote that Phil came out and not only gave her a bunch of t-shirts and merch...but he also emptied his pockets of all the cash he had...I think I remember she said it was around 80 bucks, and gave it to her...apologizing profusely.

    Yeah...he's racist, alright.

This thread needed to be bumped.

We'll miss you, Dime. Thanks for the memories, man.

    Bumpin' it up for Dimebag.

Out of all the metal shows I've been to, I've never had a bad experience with anybody in the crowd. If I got knocked around in the pit a bit much, someone was always there to offer a hand.

One of my best experiences was at a Pantera show where I just about bit the pavement in the pit. Someone was nice enough to keep me from eatin' concrete. The show was phenomenal, especially when Anthrax came out with Pantera for the encore.

That this actually happened at a metal show still amazes and disgusts me.

    Rest In Peace, DD.

I don't wanna sound racists or like I'm stereotyping, but isn't something like this supposed to happen at a rap concert, not a metal concert.

I couldnt even imagine being Vinnie Paul, watching his brother getting killed doing what he loves which is supposed to be safe.

I just wonder how far the effects of this will go. Places like the Alrosa (where the shooting occured) and the Newport (another small venue in Columbus) and I'm sure countless other venues have no barricades or anything around the busses. I've gone up to the busses numerous times at both places and B.S. with many differant bands. That will probably change all thanks to some nut-job.

I think things will change drastically...at least for awhile. I mean...look at alot of hardcore shows. Those kinds of bands love the fan interaction...bein' right up at the stage...being able to touch the band members. Hell, at hardcore shows, you constantly see fans getting onto the stage, walking right by the band members...sometimes even touching them or singing the song into the mic with them and doing stage dives. I think this one event just may change all of that...but I guess we'll see.

Security at the front doors of venues will definitely be amped up, though...that much you can be sure of.

    Upped for Dime.

IGN.com has just recently posted a nice write-up for Dimebag Darrell...

    "Dimebag Darrell
    1966 - 2004.

    December 13, 2004
    - By now the news is a little more than five days old, having been posted across the Net since late last Wednesday. But just because the news is old doesn't make it any less potent, any less emotional, any less a major blow to not only the world of heavy metal music, but the vast sphere of the arts, as well. Dimebag Darrell (born Darrell Abbott) was shot and killed during a performance with his current rock outfit Damageplan on Wednesday December 8th, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio.

The nature of the event has stunned fans, members of the music community?both on the label side and fellow musicians?and has had such a vast impact that major news outlets have been devoting unheard of amounts of time to the tragedy, going so far as to call upon the likes of KISS founder Gene Simmons to comment on the event. All of which serves to illustrate the magnetism that Darrell exhibited and that he meant a lot not only to his fervent fans, but to the world at large.

According to reports, Nathan Gale, a Pantera fan from Marysville, Ohio, ascended the stage Wednesday night at Alrosa Villa nightclub just as Damageplan were getting under way and proceeded to open fire with a hand gun. In addition to Darrell, Gale killed three others, audience member Nathan Bray, Erin Halk, and the band's trusted head of security Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson before police gunned him down.

Dimebag Darrell was born on August 20th, 1966 in Dallas, Texas. His parents name him Darrell Lance Abbott and music seemed to be his destiny since Day One. His father, Jerry, was songwriter and producer. Heavily influenced by KISS's Ace Frehley, Darrell, who's original nickname was "Diamond Darrell," formed his first musical outfit, Pantera, along with his brother Vinnie Paul, in the early '80s. Originally consisting of Darrell, Vinnie, bassist Rex Rocker (aka Rex Brown), and frontman Terry Glaze, they issued a trio of pop-metal oriented albums between 1983 and 1985. Glaze departed the band shortly thereafter and new singer Phil Anselmo signed on. The band's next album dropped in 1988. The band signed a major label deal in 1990 with East West Records and dropped an album the same year. The band, led by Darrell's fiery guitar playing, eventually went on to be one of the driving forces in metal music until they more or less broke up in 2000. Despite the dissolution of the band he started, Darrell and Vinnie teamed up to forge Damageplan, officially unveiling the band in 2003. Formed in Dallas, the band, which also consists of Pat Lachman and Bob Kakaha, practiced and recorded at Darrell's home studio, eventually releasing their debut album New Found Power on Elektra Records in February 2004.

A lot has been made about the fact that Dimebag's death came on the 24th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. Creepy coincidences aside, the events surrounding Darrell's death further prove that rock n' roll is indeed a dangerous business and that one should never toss around the word "fan" lightly (in an appearance on television Gene Simmons reminded viewers that the word is derived from "fanatic"). It has been theorized that the gunman, Nathan Gale, was a devout Pantera fanatic and troubled by the fact that the band had disbanded. While no evidence to this has been uncovered, it seems odd that a man who reportedly made Pantera's music his life soundtrack would take the life of the man who created the band.

While the music of Pantera, Damageplan, and Dimebag Darrell may not have been as well known within the mainstream pop maelstrom, they were respected and loved by their peers (and were even nominated for a Grammy's in both 1995 and 2001) as evidenced by the high volume of heavy hitters who have expressed their condolences on the Damageplan website. Everyone from Gene Simmons to Ozzy Osbourne, Ted Nugent, Dave Mustaine, and others have written words of so
