DarthIshtar: Thanks Ishy! You might never know that I have never actually had the oppourtunity to kiss a guy before. I had to do a lot of research and ask a lot of girls, including my poor Master Rose about first kisses, and all that jazz. Much research. Too bad there isn't an internship, where I might get field research done in the art of kissing.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I was on vacation and am now happily reading the posts I missed during that time.

Wonderful and revealing chapter, SoE. I enjoyed your characterizations of Luke and Mara.

"How does it feel to have someone kiss you out of nowhere." She demanded, panting triumphantly. Surely she had gained her revenge.

"Wonderful!" Luke crowed, the biggest grin on his face.

You promised more smooching and you delivered

"You two have another fight?" Kasrit asked while making sure Ghent ate something nutritional.

Luke paused. "A disagreement."

I adore the chemistry between Ghent and Kasrit. The awkward puppy love phase. And I love how Kasrit calls Luke on what happened between him and Mara.

Also the line about Mara and lack of security cameras by her quarters was a great touch. I could picture Mara doing that.

Jackyyy17: She really really does. However she is being very stubborn and refusing to be forced to reveal her feelings, even backed up into a corner. Bad Mara! I'm writing it, and rewriting, and I hope to high heavens that Mara will cooperate enough so that I can post soon.

MirandaFair: It's ok. I've been on and off vacation this summer too. Thanks Yup. Now if only I can deliver Mara to Luke somehow. Kasrit and Ghent are so much more cooperative, and thus more cute. Mara's not in the room, so the fear that keeps Kasrit quiet is gone.
Mara definately stuck me as a very private person.

Ok, I know it's been forever since I've posted. But finally after much tort-err work with Mara ::hides Embrace of Pain behind her:: She has agreed to co-operate.

I guarantee a post by the end of this week. Maybe much sooner, depending how much I add in. I hope you won't be disapointed. Sorry for keeping you all waiting for so long. (you know, if any of you are still willing to read more of this)

 

I know I wanna new postie!!! That's a total no-brainer. Went over chapter 10 again: and gosh, I'm tickled all over again. Gotta find out what happens next.

 

Jade_Eyes: Ironically, I was editing this post right here when you made that request, so it appears I do your bidding.

A/N: Yes I updated, I know someone out there is surprized. Yay! The original subplot will manifest itself again! I hope this doesn't end up being too cheesy or corney. This is probably the main turning point in the story. Maybe 4 more chapters left, but don't hold me to that number.


Part 11 Stand to Gain

Ghent heard Mara and Luke arguing, and sighed. As much as he had admired Luke, the man just didn't know how to handle women.

"Hey Kaz?"

Kasrit turned around, pulling out a plastic box. "Yeah?"

"Think I should give Luke dating advice?"

Kasrit's eyes widened, and her grip on the game weakened to the point it almost fell from her fingers. "Um, probably not. Jedi think they know everything."

"I guess." Ghent relented.

"Besides, it's Mara who needs the advice." Kasrit's brow furrowed and she made motions of hitting something or someone with a long pipe. "Alright, it's Mara who needs to be broken down before sense can reach that stubborn brain of hers."

Mara didn't know what she was supposed to do with this new found revelation. She was scared. The biggest enemy had never made her this scared. She felt backed up into a corner she had been fighting to stay away from. He liked her, ok, it was very possible that he loved her even, so she shouldn't be scared. She should feel like getting mushy, but some last defense mechanism refused to leave her that open to hurt even when the chances of it were so near the realm of the impossible. She couldn't think of an answer, not even a good excuse.

"I was bored, and you were a good kisser," Mara answered lamely. "Not because I'm attached to you, or anything."


It took Luke a moment to process that, but he hadn't expected anything, let alone answers, to be simple with Mara. "If you can't come up with a better reason than that, go out with me," Luke insisted, lips quirked upwards calling her bluff. "At least to find out why I'm such a good kisser."

Mara blushed. She looked at the walls around her like a scared feline, bristling and trying to find a way to escape. But there was none. Her eyes crinkled, and she made a noise in her throat before throwing her arms wide.


"I like you, is that what you want to hear? I've never been more attracted to someone before! Do you have any idea how irresistible you are?" Mara demanded defensively, crossing her arms. " Going to go gloat to your friends, now?"

Luke grabbed her hands eagerly, looking happier than she'd seen him. Even though he must have heard the defensive sarcasm in her words. "If I could I would tell the galaxy! Do you have any idea how long I have hoped for this very day?" His blue eyes gleamed. Finally, her defenses were starting to crack.

"To the day I admitted I was trying to seduce you?" Mara answered faintly.

Luke was incredulous, and shook her hands. "Mara, you didn't have to try, to do that." He cleared his throat. "Now what was this about a competition?"

"It was a dare Luke. To see who could get a date." Mara confessed, finally pulling away. "I had to seduce you, and by the way, I lost." Mara became indignant, determined to blame him for it.

"A dare,huh? Who do I get to thank?" Luke grinned mischievously, stepping closer to her, knowing it wasn't the answer she was looking for. He was determined the more she tried to push him away, the more he was going to show her that he was immovable in this regard.

"What! I just told you that I've been plotting behind your back to lure you into a false relationship, you should be furious!" Mara yelled in fear and confusion.

Luke looked thoughtful for a moment. "But you didn't want to use me like that, it's the reason you lost. That's why I was the last guy you'd date." His eyes softened. "And that's why you'll date me now. Why should I care what brought us together?"

"You act like you can read my-" Mara retorted before

 

well, that's a step in the right direction...

and what is she up to?

 

It was perfect.

The romance, the insecurity, the attraction.. all of it.

I knew you would get it exactly right!

Hmm... Well now. Looks like things are turning around a bit. I really, really like part 10. This one may have to grow on me, and I really dont' know why, but... good work, and I can't wait for the rest!

Delightful jumble of emotions with Mara: glad the liking and attraction came out to be the strongest. Her question about him wanting to marry her--kinda goes to show what's on her mind--what she really wants.

Kasrit is UP to something. She's acting like a slimy Hutt, playing games and making bets that Mara can't win because she doesn't know a thing about it--and saying "it's just Ghent" like he's a major league doophus. Then what's she doing with him then?

 

I'm glad to see that Mara finally cooperated... she can be rather difficult if she sets her mind to something

Kasrit's conversation was somewhat worrying at the end... did she and Mara just double the bet?

And Mara is finally giving in a little bit to her feelings

UP to something? Is that something she's likely to be? The only bets worth taking, are the ones you know you're going to win. Well it is "just Ghent" as in, if Luke or Mara were to overhear her conversation she might lose the contract. Ghent is safe that way. Oh, she likes Ghent, she just isn't used to having a boyfriend and modifying her bluntness around someone she actually trusts.


WOuld it make you feel better, or worse, to know that what Kasrit 'is up to' is what she's been up to the entire story? Or that it's a political arrangement with lots of money behind it?

I've been waiting until I could start to really reveal that bit.

SoE, I apologize for it taking me so long to post. I really loved this chapter. It brightened up my day. I'm so glad to see Luke in the role of being the stubborn one in the er - relationship.

I love that a dare gone wrong brought them together. I'm sure if something like the VoF "death on their heals" didn't seal the deal, something like this would've had to have happened. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

It was a relief to see how Luke's actions left Mara floundering, her being taken off guard. The banter you wrote between the two was so much fun.

It's just a good thing they keep surviving despite the odds to make their declarations worth something. Oh you don't even know yet, the measures that have been taken. yet.

News: I don't have a post ready, but I do have over 5 pages done of it, and betaed. (a new page for the next chapter, and about 5 of this one... beginning and end, with the very middle needing to be added.) So although friday is my typical update day. It won't be today. The plotting continues, so probably some time next week it will be up full of ,,,, and as we draw closer to the end.

Part 12 Mission, Part A


Zak knew he should be happy. He was eating yummy chocolate cake, he had won seven rounds of Rumcube, and an attractive woman had taken an interest in him. He couldn't remember ever having it this good. Well, besides the day he got Binkie 1.1 for his birthday, thus learning the meaning of life, and using it to break into the school's computer to fail some jerks and get out of P.E. classes. Even despite the fact he was hurtling towards peril with a quarrelling assassin and a Jedi, life was good. He should let it drop. He would have been able to use his 'Super Ignore' skills if the comment had come from someone else, someone who he didn't really care what they thought of him.

One smuggler thought he was gay, yet he was well.

Mara rolled her eyes at him, yet he was well.

Military types ignored him, and doubted his skills, yet he was well.

Now one little doubtful comment from the woman he had wooed and kissed had him distracted from his usual equanimity.

"What did you mean by 'Just Ghent?'"

Kasrit blinked, mirroring his own confusion, a forkful of cake near her mouth. "What?"

"You said, 'That was just Ghent' like, like I was a non-entity."

"Well you are just Ghent, for this business." Kasit said defensively. "You aren't involved, you're not a threat to the job."

He stiffened. "I may not be Mara or Luke, but I can be threatening and I'm not an idiot!"

Kasrit's eyes widened and she shook her head. "Ghent! I never said you were an idiot, why are you getting upset all of a sudden?"

"Why are you being so secretive and working against our boss all of a sudden."

"It's not sudden." Kasrit filled her mouth with cake.

At his disapproving scowl, she quickly chewed her food. Loyalty was important to him.

"Look, it's nothing bad, nothing soo disloyal. Not reeeally."

"But you can't get me involved, 'cause I'm just Ghent." He bit back bitterly.

"It's not like that." Kasrit rolled her eyes in resignation. "Look, if it's really that important to you, once we're done with this mission I'll let you in. If you promise to keep it a secret." She tapped the side of her nose.

"You should have told me." He frowned.

"So, what, now that we're dating I have to tell you everything? Well that's not how it works."

"What are you two arguing about?" Luke asked solicitously.

He turned to Kasrit who looked imploringly at him, before turning back to Luke. "Nothing," He couldn't keep the annoyance from his voice.

Luke barely seemed to notice it, practically glowing. "Well, goodnight then." He continued on towards his room, whisting.

"Hmm," Kasrit watched him leave carefully. "He seemed rather distracted don't you think?"

Zak shrugged in response, what did he care about Luke's happiness? Why was Kasrit suddenly so interested in Luke's retreating form? "What no thanks for not exposing you to Jedi scrutiny?"

She raised her eyebrows and quirked an eyebrow up as she often did with him. "Thanks," She said getting up, and pecking his lips. "And goodnight."

Zak took a deep breath, opening up Binkie again, in hopes of finding his serenity again, and a few answers.
