Sorry if this has been brought up before. But I usually stuck to Bounty Hunter books but I got this one for the hell of it. I had fun reading this one. The whole chase through the tunnels bit sucked but the rest of the book was pretty cool. All the way up to the end. What did you guys think of it? I thought it was fun and didn't worry about too many technicalities or anything, just action the whole time.
Yep. This is the mindless action drivel of the SWEU. Awesome and lovable if you take it for what it is, but it doesn't bear much close scrutiny.
I thought it was a really good book. I didn't see anything that screamed of a Major problem....There where some minor but yea what about kind of things but if your not too picky it's a fun read. The only thing that really bugged me was the council sending only one Apprentice Jedi on that kind of mission. I thought that was a bit hokey. It was just a set up to get her into the chase with Maul so it really didn't matter much. Also I am a bit of a cheer for the Good guys kind of guy. I wasn't too happy with the outcome of the hero's in this book. At least I knew going into it that any Jedi who face the Maulster would come out on the wrong side of a saber blade. At least they went down swinging.
I liked it a lot...not enough of Maul, but it was overall a good book. Doright is right that there were some minor problems (i.e. some spelling, grammar, one or two confusing chunks) but otherwise was a very enjoyable read.
I echo what's been said above....very fun read with characters you can get to know and enjoy, in spite of the ending!
Thanks for your input. As I read it I thought "man, i bet there are a lot of people who hate this book" but so far you guys haven't hated it yet. I have to admit, i'm a crazy action fan. I'm not too into the whole technicalities with SW but the darth maul book was a good little "fresh" thing. Seeing Episode I and then reading this book was very fun because we could picture what Maul would look like doing these things and his expressions and everything, it was great. And the end just flowed pretty good into Episode I. Liked it much. One of my favorites so far.
i enjoyed the books... i am not going to say to put in a class with zahn or tolkien but it was definely a fun read...
I just finished reading this book and DAMN I liked it. I've grown a new found respect for Darth Maul as being a totaly evil killing machine. I was glad to find out that Maul killed more Jedi's in his Jedi Killer time then just the maverich over compassionate Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jin. I'd love to see more EU novels based on Darth Maul before he was wrongfully killed in TPM. From what I've read in Shadow Hunter, Darth Maul is the ultimate killing machine. That one part where he raids into a club and kills that Hutt Black Sun Vigo was awesome. He killed a Hutt, the only other character that I know who killed a Hutt is Leia. One "scene" that I grin every time it comes to my mind was the part where that Twi'lek Jedi Master does a huge jump from his skycar to Mauls speeder bike or "sith speeder". The main thing that got my interest is how Darth Maul killed every other major and semi-major character in the story. There is one mistake that I found in this story. Sometime around the begining it is mentioned that Darth Maul is nearly 2 meters in height, which is equal to being nearly 7 feet tall. This is so WRONG!. When watching the TPM you can clearly see that Maul was a tad short compared to most of the other major characters. Hell, both Qui-Gon and Obi-wan were taller then him. The writer of this story made a big error. If Maul is 7 feet tall, then that would make Qui-Gon nearly 8 feet tall, since the Jedi Master is obviously visualy taller then the this Sith lord.
i too wondered why would the council send a padawan (even though it was obiwan) on a mission alone. this wasnt exactly pick up the mail. i liked it. it wasnt anything world shattering (it couldnt be because of the timeframe and what we already knew of ep1), but it was a fun read. I-5 is the funniest droid in EU other than 3p0 and r2. too bad he had to be mindwiped. the way the story wrapped it self up was pretty good. i thought it would end crappylike, but it ended pretty well (though you'd know he was dead in the water as soon as you saw that the guy he gave the holocron to was palpatine). im still wondering which jedi his son was, and did he accually have any force strength (if he did, and he was sitting on a sith holocron....well that could of gotten waay intresting, maybe even could of saw two more books). this books should really have been called 'the unluckiest sith' or 'mauls bad day' because he just couldnt get the job done.
Those would be better titles. Especially do to the fact that Darth Maul gets killed only a couple of days after the events that take place in Shadow Hunter.
Two meters wouldn't be 7 feet, it would be 6'6, which is still a bit too tall for Maul, I think. One metter is 39 inches, which is 3 feet and 3 inches. But authors usually say "appoximately" or "around" two meters, because 6 foot tall is an average height.
I think YOU are wrong Reno. One meter is = to 100cm or 3.5 feet. Chewbacca is 2 meters tall, and he's A LOT taller then 6'6". Then again, I could be wrong, cause I did fail senior math in high school, .
I know I'm going against the grain here, but I really loathed this book. It was the worst in the series since KJA's god-awful Young Jedi Knights. The plot was moronic, the characters were moronic, the action was pathetic, and worst, it made the purposely one dimensional Darth Maul an even thinner character than he was in Ep1. The only thing to sell this book was James Luceno's cool short story at the end. I'm sure Maul probably has a book in him, but this ain't it. (The least the could have done was obey continuity.)
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, to the best of my recollection, is the best Star Wars novel i have ever read, and I've read just about all of them. Maul is easily the most interesting Star Wars character I have so far come across, and I hope to see him in more books (and comics) in the near future.
how could you say the action was pathetic? Every other page had action on it. Maul killed (rough estimate) around 20 people in that story. 9 of those sewer things the jedi master his apprentice the trandoshan bodyguard 2 squidheads the neimoidian 2 Gamorreans the Hutt Lorn I guess that bounty hunter could be added although she did kill herself. There was action all over in that book. It defined Maul's character if you ask me. It was definitely more fun than the Bounty Hunter novels, ANY of them. It was a "fun" read. As the guy at the store said when i took it to the counter "ah, you'll like this, fun book"
To clarify: 1. In DMSH, Maul kills not one, but TWO jedi (one a master, albeit an incompetent one,) when it is stated in various forms that the first encounter Maul has with another Jedi is Qui-Gon on Tatooine. Other, smaller slips occur through out, but this is the biggest. 2. Joe, body count doesn't equal good action. Good action equals good action. Charlies Angels has more fighting than Ep1, but which has the Better scenes? Nuff said.
my turn lol you are comparing some lame movie to Episode I...had Shadow Hunter been made into a movie, the action w/ the full body count would kill anything we've seen in any SW movie.
I really enjoyed Shadow Hunter alot more than I thought I would. Even thogh you know the book dosent hold any major continuity issues, that dosent take away from the enjoyment of the book at all. Its a good, fun self contained read, and a great way to get your fix of the EU and just read an action oriented book at a leisurely pace at the same time.
I'm not one to nit-pick every little thing wrong with Star Wars and the whole time line crap so Shadow Hunter was really cool and fun to me.
