PT Darth Maul: The dark side of expectations

I’m the EU, idk. Canonically, He did have a different name before Sidious adopted him. What that name was isn’t known.

 

why doesn't that surprise me?

 

I thought Maul WAS his Sith name. I mean…it sounds like one.

 

Not according to the (now non canon) book Darth Plagueis. (I think, may have been another)

 

Yup - in Darth Plagueis, Maul is his birth name:

“This one is strong in the Force. In the right hands, he can become a powerful asset.”
“Servitude of a different sort.”
She ignored the remark. “Take him. Save him.”
Palpatine regarded the newborn again. “Have you named him?”
“Maul, he is called.”
“Befitting the power you divine in him.”
She nodded. “Take him.”
Palpatine gazed at her and, motioning with his right hand, said, “You will forget this encounter.”
She locked eyes with him. “I will try.”
“For your own sake, I hope you do. Now, go. Before I change my mind.”

However, given the similarities between Nightbrother names "Feral" "Savage" etc and Maul's name, it's possible that Talzin might have handed him over to Sidious as "Maul" in the newcanon, the way Kycina did in Legends.

 

Have there been any other birth names used as Sith names? Not trying to derail but get to the bottom of why Maul didn't get a new name.
Is Maul the first one because his birth name just worked?

 

Revan (already an alias, changed to it before he went to the dark side, to stand for his commitment to revanchism) didn't bother to change his name when he went dark, in Legends - just calling himself Darth Revan.
