In the phantom menace we see Darth Sidious talking with Darth Maul on Corsucant. Know I always assumed that Maul lived on Corsucant when he wasn't on Sith missions. What was his official identity. Was he a part of Palpatine's entourage?

As far as we know he was always in the shadows never really known by anyone

That would make sense. Wouldn't the Jedi recognise him if he was part of Palpatine entourage?

He slapped on a fake mustache and became Larry Maul, mild-mannered CPA and fly fishing enthusiast.

@Vader fan 99, from Episode I, I think we're meant to conclude that Darth Maul lived on Coruscant when he wasn't going on missions at the bidding of Darth Sidious as you say. I agree with the idea mentioned earlier in the thread that we were probably supposed to believe from Phantom Menace that Darth Maul lived in shadows, not necessarily as a member of Palpatine's entourage or anything official like that.

If you're interested in Darth Maul's background, you might want to see if you can get your hands on a copy of Darth Maul's Episode I journal. It's a quick read written for children but you get a sense of Maul's living quarters, his relationship with Sidious, and generally of his life in the shadows, carrying out the orders of Darth Sidious. Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter was also good for providing a glimpse into Maul's life and missions before Episode I, and that was a well-written adult book old EU, so well worth checking out in my opinion even if it is classified as Legends now.

Such people are always introduced as being "From parts unknown" if they are wrestlers.

I liked the depiction in the Darth Plagueis novel, where Maul was basically not allowed to leave his hideout unless called on a mission and would look at the Jedi Temple with binoculars, dreaming of the duels he could have there.

    That was terrible imo.

To think that a ''Sith Lord'' hides and do nothing but training with droids makes no sense at all, thank god that's not canon any longer.

I will never for the life of me understand Luceno's decision to keep Plagueis alive through Episode I and in the process relegate Maul to some kind of ersatz Sith Lord.

Darth Maul was the second Sith Lord. There were only two, a master and an apprentice, and he was the apprentice. This is what was established by the films, and it's what Luceno should have kept to.

I understand his motives, he wanted a more exciting story in his book, but I think he chose a very wrong way to do it.

If you want Plagueis to be close to Ep.I timeline, to make your story more exciting, I think you could use Maul even more effectively, since we know Maul couldn't duel with Jedi until the Naboo, (though he did in the new canon secretly) you could always use him against the other Dark Siders, why not against Plagueis too? It's a perfect story, both Palpatine and Maul secretly team up against Plagueis to destroy him, Plagueis couldn't understand who trained this Sith Lord, but when he realizes the truth it was too late and Palpatine already kills him in his sleep.

I also understand why Plagueis must be so powerful and all knowing being, so he should understand all things before it happens, (He even learns about Maul but he did nothing? That's another fallacy) but if he was that good he wouldn't die, Palpatine would. So Palpatine must deceive him for a big time.

Only having read about the novel on Wookieepedia, my facts here might be a bit off, but Palpatine was like "Oh, he's just some dude I'm training as an assassin or something. Totally not my apprentice, though" and Plagueis was chill with it, right?

I mean, how many Sith Lords had secret apprentices in EU? Plagueis's master being one of them, so it's not like he's unfamiliar with the idea
Even in canon, Dooku had what, at least three unofficial Force wielding apprentices who totally weren't Sith, just people who happened to use the dark side and red lightsabers

Right now all there is Star Wars: Darth Maul issues 1-5 and Age of the Republic: Darth Maul (which acts as little more than an issue 6)on Maul's origins and this is right before TPM. His origins and training is still basically a mystery. Whatever else little we know would come from Son of Dathomir.

So in canon Maul apparently was living on Coruscant the entire time with trips to Malachor pretty routine in his early and later training as it appears to be very important location for Sidious and Maul. Seems Palpatine's personal quarters and 'the works' was always a secret Sith base of operations for them, so a good guess is that Maul partially trained there. That place was reused for the Imperial Inquisitors who seemed to have been secretly training for some time prior to Anakin's fall to the Dark Side and Vader's near death on Mustafar. Corsucant is very important to the Sith because it used be a Sith world before the Jedi and Republic - the Sith shrine under the temple and all that kinda thing.

I would have imagine there is a secret network of passages between under the Jedi temple and the works and probably elsewhere that only the Sith know about and use to traverse unnoticed and come and go as they please.
