Not sure if this thread has been created already, but I am working on a Darth Nihilus costume and so far I have a majority of the costume complete. The only thing I'm having trouble with is the most important part, the mask. Anyone know of any good tutorials on how to make it or any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Flagship Eclipse (the 501st EU Force Users detachment) has lots of information on Darth Nihilus - feel free to visit - I believe there may even be a tutorial or 2 for Nihilus (not positive if its Nihilus or Revan that has the extensive tutorial because the site is currently down)

(although as of 1-11-07 @6:00 PM CST the site is currently down due to our host having issues)

You know, thinking about Nihilus has inspired me to do a custom Dark Jedi. I have a custom Jedi that I'm slowly reworking for CIV, and I want to have a costume with a covered face (so far they all have no face coverings). So I'm going to make my Jedi into a Dark Force user. Nihilus inspired me because I'm going to design and create an original mask to wear under my hood.

Thanks for the link. I like your dark jedi idea, you will have to post some pics when it's done

I certainly will! My plan is to wear it on the same day as my fellow Anakin's wear their costumes. That way when it comes time to take our group shot I'll just take off the mask and extra glove, and presto! I'm Anakin.

Right, so some things changed and I've decided to drop my Dark Jedi idea for now. I just happened to start looking at Nihilus's costume and realized I've already got a lot of the costume from existing outfits I've done in the past. So I decided to take a whack at it, I can maybe get it done within a week or two!

it would be cooler if you could make the mask appear as if it was made of ivory or bone

I'm not exactly sure what I'll be using yet. I was thinking I'd simply do it out of posterboard, I have a sheet that's been laying around for nearly a year so it's about time I use it. Since you really can't make anything three-dimensional out of posterboard, I was going to take some kind of wire and bend it into the shape of the 'horns' and drape the cowl over them. And then I was going to velcro everything together.

    Hmm..alrighty guess, I'll chime in.

As far as the mask is concerned, I made one, using one of the full face maks that you can get from any costume shop...the blank ones you buy to build your own mask on.

With a tiny bit of heat..*I used a high power hair dryer...*..If you have a heat gun, just BE CAREFUL...you can bend it abit. You dont really need much. I drew out the design I wanted, until I was satisfied with the look. I then CAREFULLY..cut out my design.

As far as the horns are concerned, I used FOAM..shapped the way I wanted, and tacked the hood on, so that the correct headshape is formed. Especially the way the materials folds around the horns. And it is not easily damaged.

Since I consider not being able to see ANYTHING under the mask much more intimidating, I use a mesh, to hide the face underneath the mask, so that nothing shows.

    I hope that helps.

Hey, Ktala! I recognize your username from the 501st. Awesome. Yeah, I'd planned to use mesh. Now I just need to get a bunch of black stuff for the cape/cowl. Since there's no set-in-stone way to do this costume I'm thinking about doing the cape in a basic rectangle, but having it sorta fan out on the sides, but cut back in at about wrist length. I'll have to sketch out what I mean.

    EDIT:Here's what I mean.

Mugen from the 501st Dune Sea Garrison has a great Nihilus costume. He has a video here:

Just wanted to update ya'll, my Nihilus is almost done. Just need to do the red/black decorations to the mask, sew up the cowl and cape, and IT'S DONE! Oh, and get some mesh somewhere, too.

Alright, so today's the last day before ALL-CON (actually it starts today, but I'm going tomorrow) and I'm still not completely done. But now only one thing remains: the cowl. I had done the cowl once before, but unfortunately it came out way too small. So now I'm redoing it, and hopefully this time it will come out better. If not, I guess I'll just go to plan B- my custom Jedi.
