reading up on Darth Rivan and the Darkstaff.. can we tie the Darkstaff to Ruin?

some quotes from wookieepedia that made me think of Ruin/DarkUnderlord:

According to ancient tomes unearthed on Almas, the Darkstaff was originally discovered by Darth Rivan, who had strange dreams about being called by the artifact. Rivan believed that it was the Darkstaff that drew him to Almas and the Cularin system, hoping to use him as a way to leave the system. Further investigation led Rivan to believe that the Darkstaff was not intentionally created, but was rather the byproduct of another experiment.

accidently created by an experiment? channeling of the Dark Underlord perhaps?
and the Darkstaff called Rivan... Ruins remnants, or the Dark Underlords trapped within? is that how he could be killed by a Jedi Master?

Measuring a meter in length and four centimeters in diameter, the Darkstaff seemed to consume any light around it. It also consumed any Force energy around it, literally feeding on the Force. According to Rivan's dreams, the Darkstaff had already caused some ancient tragedy in the Cularin system, and had been hidden away to prevent any further catastrophe. Rivan believed that the destruction of the planet Oblis, which created the Cularin system asteroid belt and a nexus of dark side power, was the aftermath of this event. The Darkstaff wanted to be discovered by Rivan so that he could use it as a weapon against his enemies, so it invaded his dreams. Its release would allow the Darkstaff to gain power, both for itself and over Rivan, until it eventually consumed Rivan himself. Rivan, however, refused to go in search of the artifact, fearing that its release would cause great damage to the galaxy.

consuming light/the Force? sounds Nihilus, sounds Dark Underlord... definitely Ruin as per philosophy

Darth Rivan, understanding that the Darkstaff was sentient (or semi-sentient), considered that such an artifact should be destroyed and, if his disciple is to be believed, he was afraid of the Darkstaff.[1]

At the same time, Phylus Mon would feed the Darkstaff with the Force essences of living beings,

While the ship was in the Cularin system asteroid belt, the Darkstaff began modifying the galaxy around it to its own image - meaning the ship, Animiasma. The ship was becoming an extension of the Darkstaff, becoming a darkness that appeared to suck the light of faraway stars. At the same time, the Darkstaff used the sound system from the ship to generate a high-frequency noise spreading horror and confusion among the crew.[1]

The Darkstaff did its best to stop the team, making the air fuzzy in the sides and leading them to an ambush in Phylus Mon's slave zoo. As it did not work, the Darkstaff decided to teleport from Phylus Mon's grasp and possess a young human slave, Alianda, so that it could speak easily with the intruders. The possessed girl's eyes went black from one eyelid to the other, and its voice was unexpectedly manly. In this conversation, the Darkstaff tried to threaten the intruders to leave "its" ship. When this failed, the Darkstaff abandoned the woman's body (which would suffer a lethal shock) and vanished to another part of the ship. At this point, the Animiasma had already become a dark side site

also note, the Darkstaff is Palpatines walking stick^^

I don't have much time to post right now... but Ceiran: I like your idea of them just having wanted to "summon Ruin's ghost", so to speak, but them getting a rude awakening when he tricks them into doing what Andeddu tried to do with Wyyrlok (i.e. stealing their life force in order to resurrect himself).

250 years to stew on the fact he wasn't god was sure to piss the bloke off.

Oh, and the Darkstaff? Why didn't I remember that?! [face_mischief]

I remember once thinking about that being Ruin's soul too. "Creed of Ruin" coupled with "The Darkstaff having a mind of its own" always left me thinking "Please be Ruin, please by Ruin..." [face_praying]

While going the old fashioned "anchoring soul" route would be out of character of "pre-death" Ruin, after he had to face up to the fact he wasn't god and had spent 250 years stuck in limbo between life and death as a disembodied spirit, I could quite easily see him finally accepting the need to do things the traditional way. Immortality's immortality, after all. :p

And the Darkstaff was uber. It teleported a whole freaking star system into the future, didn't it? :p

Palpatine's walking stick? LOL. That idea is awesome! [face_laugh] :D :p

Reading up on the Dark Underlord's death again... I see that he was defeated when a Jedi employed some Mandalorians (that's one desperate Jedi), but fell to the dark side in the process, even though he killed the Underlord. Pretty good, ironically tragic end. He died... but he took his assassin down with him. [face_mischief]

Suitably fitting end for potentially one of the top Dark Lords of all time.
