I kinda feel the ultimate villain not only had a death that wasn't deserving of him (should have been more epic) BUT the death itself seams like it shouldn't be enough to kill him. I mean he gets grabbed, walked over slowly to an edge, and thrown. And this ultimate threat is dead. I personally think a lightsaber slash would have sufficed better. What do you all think?

He got tossed down the core of a superweapon which exploded afterwards.

Yeah, it was enough to kill him.

I loved the irony that the big bad was simply tossed over a ledge by a man trying to save his son.

The situational always dictates your response, and because of that, Vader's treatment of Sidious was fine with me. There was nothing else he could really do.

I thought it was excellent. Vader's redemption is one of my favorite moments of the saga.

I have problems with RETURN OF THE JEDI. This isn’t one of them. The buildup to it, the redemption of Anakin Skywalker, the pacing, the music, the shot selection…it’s all perfect (before the Blu-rays screwed it up, that is).

Well the scene is definitely entertaining, but I find it hard to see Sidious dieing like that. I mean a throw? He should have just bounced back up or levitated back up. I mean Vader could have grabbed his Saber with the force and cut him in half, that'd be a lot more logical and believable IMO.

Vader should have conjured up a machine gun out of thin air and riddled Palpatine's body full of bullet holes.

Palpatine seemed fixated during his death, completely focused on sending out as much force lightning as possible.

So a force machine gun? :3
But seriously there's TWO sabers on the ground. I'd prefer Sidious have a more BELEIVABLE death,as it's just hard to believe he dies via a throw when he has ways to get out of it.

Luke saber throws,Sidious jumps up and dodges, and then unexpected slash from Vader's saber throw.

Nope. The more ignoble the death, the better. In this case, at least - when its Anakin doing the deed. That ******* had it coming.

anakinfan edit: You have to star that one out completely.

I get the whole ignoble thing, but I think it should have been better, and father/ son combo would have been sweet.

Also I know about the lightning but still, I fin it hard to believe Sidious couldn't stop himself from falling, in TCW we see how agile he is and his force powers are at least tied with yoda.

TCW was made 25 years after ROTJ, so there was no looking back to TCW to see what Sidious could do when making ROTJ.

I would consider the inconsistency a greater problem with TCW than with ROTJ, considering it was made later.

Plus, are you talking about the Yoda arc in season 6? That was a vision, not the real Sidious.

I have never had a problem with this scene.

And especially now after the prequels have been released, we've seen multiple characters get hit by lightning, and all are pretty much instantly immobilized. Yoda gets thrown across the room and is immobilized for a bit. Dooku shocks Anakin in AOTC, and it has the same effect. Luke instantly collapses and starts writhing in pain when he gets hit by Force lightning. Mace gets hit and starts convulsing in place.

But when Vader gets hit, he still manages to maintain a hold of Palpatine, walk him over to the reactor pit and throw him over the edge.

Palpatine tells Yoda in ROTS, that Vader will become more powerful than either of them, and for that one brief moment, it seems IMO like Vader's love for Luke and selflessness did make him more powerful than anyone else. Enough to stand up to Palpatine and overcome his lightning, at least for a time. Ultimately the lightning had mortally wounded him, but he was the only character to be hit and not become immediately immobilized.

That was a big moment. It wasn't a simple feat to kill Palpatine.

I mean he's at least on par with yoda, because in ROTS yoda barely wins the struggle vs a DAMAGED sidious, and CW isn't inconsistent....there anyways.....it's just that he shouldn't die from a throw. It's emotional he survives the lightning long enough,it was subtle but it shows, however being thrown and not levitating himself up or something seams silly he just falls and does NOTHING. THat and the ewoks are the 2 things in VI that didn't seam believable to me.

In one of the few instances where I can remember my first viewing, I was in utter shock that Vader did it. I can only assume Palpatine shared my surprise as well. There was lots of buildup, and a payoff with this huge explosion. Yeah, a fitting end for the most powerful being in the universe. I loved this ending so much that I was disappointed to see the EU take away some of the gravity by having Palpatine survive.

Also, fun fact; Dave Prowse is the man who does the deed. After multiple takes with an incompetent stuntman, Prowse says enough is enough and asks to do the scene. The former bodybuilder did it in one take. For some reason, Marquand did not like Prowse, and tried to minimize his role, which is a shame.

I think it's perfect. There's beautiful symbolism to it, with Anakin "throwing away" his hatred.

Not just this but also the symbolism of this moment comes out of early version of the Bible. Abaddon over time was a place...the abyss...and then later a being...angel of the abyss...and later morphed into the archangel Michael. As Abaddon in some stories he is the Devil's right hand man like Vader is to Palps and Abaddon betrays the Devil and throws him into the abyss. Later it is Michael who chains the Devil to a rock then throws him into the abyss.

Would have been better if they fell down the pit together and Palpatine pulled out Maul's old lightsaber he kept concealed in his sleeve. Cue a 12 minute lightsaber duel after which Vader decapitates Palpatine and uses his rocket boots to fly back up to safety

I've always thought Palpatine had caught himself in a kind of feedback loop. He was calling on the dark side to create lightning from his hands, then Vader jerked his hands up so he was shocking himself, and he reflexively called on the dark side to defend himself, but that dark power just fed more lightning, and he tried harder to defend himself with the dark side which fed more lightning, and it just escalated in a vicious circle until his "crude matter" body couldn't take any more finally blew up.

Yoda still didn't stop himself from falling down the Senate Rotunda and hitting the floor, regardless of how agile he is. Palpatine's death is about being taken off guard. He's powerful, but he's not Superman. Course, you could always go with "Robot Chicken" and his final moments.

Maybe it was not epic, such as Anakin defeat in ROTS (I hate you!) but it was good, I think.
