If Suited Vader was such a pro, such a deadly precisionist, such a great duelist, etc ...
How in the galaxy could a very green noob ESB Luke score a hit on him.

    Going easy on him?

    Not trying to hurt him?

Okay. But from what I've seen guys like Dooku, Yoda, Maul, Palps, ROTS Anakin, etc. would have handled/toyed with Luke Skywalker in ESB quite effortlessly and would not allow a noobie with a lightsaber to strike them.

If given the same instructions to just disarm and contain ESB Luke Skywalker - I think the Jedi/Sith (even crybaby ROTS Ani) could have done it without a scratch.

To sum up, the guys that are saying Suited Vader could win against his younger self using force techniques and mastery - well, they have a point, 20 years tutelage under Palps is a priceless advantage.

But, the guys who assert Suited Vader had the "stuff" necessary to hang with the aforementioned PT Jedi/Sith in lightsaber combat - well, I really can't believe we are watching the same saga.

And it is Star Wars tradition/protocol to have every confrontation to culminate with the igniting of lightsabers.

ESB Luke is not a "noob". He was the most powerful jedi Vader ever fought. And Vader has fought quite a few Jedi.

    You should be...
"A warrior needed to contend with equals. Obi-Wan was gone, and the other Jedi were all extinct, save one, who was the strongest of them all. His own son." That's from Shadows of the Empire.

If there's only one left, it stands to reason that he would be the most powerful :p

Maybe that should be read as "potentially the strongest of them all".

Agreed that is the most probable interpretation.

Against Kenobi on the Death Star, I believe Vader was playing it very safe, he knew what Kenobi can and would do....Against Luke in ESB, he was just measuring up Luke to see if he was worth turning to the Darkside....Vader (ESB) vs. Anakin (ROTJ) would be a battle to see who would make the first mistake....Anakin would make a mistake allowing the helmeted Sith to win the battle, Vader would not be fighting as a test, but as a fight to win,
