Another really good issue- and an improvement over the first issue at that. Vader is written very well here (the "you have graphs" line being a standout) and has that great hero moment early on, we had an awesome Imperial astromech subplot* and Tagge is presented as very competent (especially since Vader's actions actually prove Tagge was right about the pirates- even if Tagge will never know that) and I rather liked his "how many SSDs could we have built instead of the Death Star?" observation (wasn't that Pellaeon's view as well?). Probably the only oddity is Tagge's arrogance- he comes across more like Motti half the time, then swaps back to the more analytical and observant ANH character. * Spoiler But, dammit, after this week's Rebels episode with Chopper's continued bloodthirsty nature, I really can't take any more Imperial astromech murders.
I'm joining this party late, but I just wanna say I love that Tagge is alive in the NEU. This is the kinda stuff I wanted to see Marvel do, so kudos to them! --Adm. Nick
The ANH novel had Tagge voice several of Motti's lines before being strangled - which might be the starting point for the whole "Tagge family are Vader's enemies" thing. Maybe this is similar - Tagge is becoming Motti-ish.
What a great issue! *This* is the Lord Vader I remember from Classic Star Wars and we saw in SotE and Ghost Prison. Fantastic. I'm on board now. As for how to pronounce Tagge -- I've always used the undignified "Taggy," but here's a thought: why not a German sound, like Guten Tag? I think it adds a lot of gravitas to the character. That was the first thing I noticed when I saw the final cover today. I was inordinately relieved that they not only used the Grand Admiral insignia from the EU, but that they didn't just use the Grand Moff insignia like some lazier illustrations in the 90s have done for just about everybody (most glaringly, Daala on the Jedi Search cover). Certainly beats the insignia we saw in the solicitation, as seen on page 1.
Maybe Tagge's behavior in ANH was because he was jealous that Sheev favored the Death Star over his starfleet. Now that Sheev favours Tagge's starfleet, Tagge's enjoying his power. In the ANH novelization, Tagge says, "I think the construction of this station has more to do with Governor Tarkin’s bid for personal power and recognition than with any justifiable military strategy."
That was much better than Issue #1. The writing was better overall and the story held my attention. Vader's "voice" was more consistent with the films as well. I also enjoyed the art more. I'm still dismayed by the panel layouts: here and there it gets into a groove but then it just veers off randomly, like a poorly edited movie. I'm not sure exactly what the artist is trying to do but it's very disjointed. Still, at least this issue managed to have a sense of pacing. Is this connected to Luceno's "Tarkin"? I noticed Crymorah mentioned and the whole set-up was reminiscent of that novel.
This is also how I say it. Most people I speak with pronounce Tagge like the English word "tag", though. I meant to say in my earlier post how fun it was to open this issue with Vader in his TIE. I haven't read many comic series, so I'm excited to start such a promising one as this. "Have faith."
I believe it is. Everything is connected now in the new canon. The first sign of this was Palpatine having his office in the Jedi Temple.
Well this was pretty great. Spoiler I know a couple other people mentioned this too, but the "Tarkin had vision. You have graphs." part was my favorite.
This comic has some amazingly lazy background art, no wonder they just copied the movies for #1 backgrounds, though at least we are somewhere new this time. Humans still look really bad, the Alien pirates though at least managed to look decent. As for the story….. I still really don’t care, as it still feels really heavy on the “been there, done this” but then I might be the wrong target audience with having read pretty much every SW comic ever and expecting something “new “here. So for now I am dropping the series, let me know if it picks up down the line.
Surely I can't be the only one hoping that Tagge doesn't die at the end of this? While I would completely understand if that was the case, given that Vader's ascent back into power would probably have to come at the expense of Tagge's own rise, I see no reason why Vader can't redeem himself enough for Palpatine to pull him out from under Tagge's command and have them both off doing their own thing. Of course I'm heavily biased since Tagge has always been one of my favourite characters since ANH, given that he was the only person who fully recognised the Rebel threat, and I always found him criminally underused - especially in comparison to Motti who, despite being the perfect thematic archetype of the smug, modern, New Order Imperial and therefore a fun character to use, was ultimately wrong about everything. While I won't let my bias get in the way of good storytelling, and won't be disappointed if Tagge's death does eventuate in a satisfying and compelling way, I'd still love it if he keeps on kicking for a while longer and finally gets some well-deserved fleshing out. I especially like Tagge's promotion to Grand General. While the only other Grand General, Malcor Brashin, currently no longer exists in canon, he was another Army leader who conducted most of his affairs within the Fleet, overseeing ground operations from a tactical suite aboard his personal Star Destroyer. I actually feel kind of stupid considering that it never crossed my mind that the references to Tagge and "his" Starfleet might mean that he had a similar style of command, until his new rank reminded me of Brashin. As for the pronunciation of his name, I've always said it in the same way as "guten tag" like Jello suggested, but that's just because I never liked the way "Taggi" sounded.
Speaking of background art, it was interesting to see a marble colonnade inside a Super Star Destroyer.
I'm still a bit irratated bu the whole army/navy confusion though. Aren't you, GrandAdmiralJello, of all people?
Yeah, that kinda bugs me a bit. Love the return of Tagge, love the references, but associating a Grand General with the Imperial Starfleet is just weird. It would be like hearing Admiral Piett gushing over battalions of stormtroopers and formations of Imperial walkers. --Adm. Nick
