Discussion Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Film (It’s Heir to the Empire, folks. I know it, you know it!)

I think it would be weird to see a CGI Luke and Leia next to a non CGI, very different looking Han Solo. Rise of Skywalker, Rogue One and Mandalorian have showed that LFL would rather use CGI to recreate screen accurate looks for characters than to recast.

 

Yeah. That opportunity came and went. Let it be IMO.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the actors signed away their likeness for the characters years ago so they can use them if they want. They didn't use deepfake Leia for TROS out of respect for Carrie Fisher's then-recent passing (although the cost of deepfaking a major character for an entire film probably played a role in that decision too,) Carrie Fisher even made a joke about signing away her likeness in "Empire of Dreams" saying something to the effect of she has to pay GL a few bucks whenever she looks in the mirror.
They did ask Peter Cushing's family if they could use his likeness for RO but I'm not sure if it was out of respect or if he never signed his likeness away as did the main characters.

 

Carrie Fisher sell her likeness as Leia away for merchandise and toys (Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford likely signed a similar contract). However, these contracts shouldn't apply to deepfake (which didn't exist at that time).

Also, I'm pretty sure they needed permission from Fisher's family to use old recordings in TROS. Imagine that an studio could use actors recordings in one movie and put them in any other without their consent.

 

I wish they'd just recast already

 

I mean...Luke was recast for BOBF. They got an actor who looked just like MH. All those scenes are that new actor. He looks eerily just like MH.



Then they deepfaked MH's face and de-aged it on to him. And you can just kind of tell. It wasn't a full on cgi-creation.

I really don't think Luke/Hamill or Han/Ford will be in this that much. Luke might get a large cameo. But I don't think the entire movie will feature him.

Filoni has been the George Lucas of SW stories for awhile now. There are some he gets more credit for as director or his characters but everything on screen - TV or now feature film goes through Filoni. Work of Zahn and others are there to respect the sandbox and get potentially adapted to main media.

I realized my mistake as I clicked “Post Reply.”

 

This will be an interesting expierment, will tv audience transfer to the movie, and will there be an audience for the movie, if they never seen any of the shows.

 

This is where I’m a bit skeptical. You really have to approach this from two standpoints: it has to be satisfying to people who have watched everything from The Clone Wars to Ahsoka and everything in between, and it has to be comprehensible to people who have seen none of the TV material, for whom Star Wars is a solely cinematic experience.

I think a good litmus test is going to be the Ahsoka series. Filoni said that he wrote the scripts so that the story made sense to someone who had never seen Rebels, despite ostensibly being a follow up to that series. If he pulls that off, then I think we’ll be in good shape for the “have your cake and eat it too” balancing act this movie needs to pull off in order to work for the general audience.

 

Hopefully a few minutes left for the movie after the crawl ends.

If you want to destroy hype for Filoni's future Rebels-related projects, have them watch the majority of Rebels.

 

Actually, she was about to be elected as a Chancellor (or rather as a First Senator, a position aimed at replacing the one of Chancellor), but then the truth of her true parentage got out.

 

We still dont know if this is for the theatres or disney+ this project sounds a bit like it's TV content, not in a pejorative way, it's just that it seems to be tied to the series and might be more fitted to be watched at home, rather than asking the people who dont know the shows to pay to watch the end of a story that started on TV.

I still think this will be a Dinsey Plus film.

 

And it just screams Star Wars and really sets the tone when done right.
