Got to give it to FatBurt - the BBC published this 6 mins ago on their website and he posted it here 5 mins ago.
An absolute legend, one of the best. I don't think I saw her in anything where she wasn't great, even at a great age in Downton Abbey she was the best character & stole every scene. One of the prime examples of why the Harry Potter TV adaptation will fail to match up to the movies, they'll struggle to find anyone of the calibre to play McGonagall as well as Smith.
Just got the alert. Devastated. She was amazing in so many, many roles but in her final years, her role as the Dowager Countess allowed her to just let loose. No one could deliver a withering glare or witty barb as effortlessly as she did.
I am in the middle of a very boring teams meeting. This felt like it was a far more interesting thing to do. I only found out as my phone shouted it at me with BBC notifications. Had that not happened, I'd probably be asleep now. Call still has 30mins to go. Very tempted to join Maggie as this really could have been an email.
Today I learned the lady from Potter films and the lady from Clash of the Titans were the same person. I just never looked into it.
My mom absolutely loves California Suite, so the first film I ever saw with Maggie Smith was that: Looking back on it, not sure why my parents let me watch that movie when I was little, but then I remembered it was the 80s.
She had the decency to do so on the start of a weekend so the astute among her fanbase can binge the posh and classy Downton Abbey while absolutely going to session on dozens of boxes of wine.
She made a film called Love, Pain and the Whole Damn Thing , which is a delightful film and hardly shown anymore, I kinda fell in love with her for a bit after seeing it.
