Deadpool 3 Writers Reese and Winnick on being able to mine the MCU and more

“It’s a thrill,” Reese says when asked about their new Marvel home. “It’s an absolute thrill to have the band back together, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that kind of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage we necessarily saw coming—Fox and Disney, that was an external thing [separate] from our storytelling process. But we’re absolutely finding the serendipity and the gold in that situation, or we’re trying to.”

Both Reese and Wernick excitedly exclaim “Oh yeah!” when asked if they are finding things to make fun of in the MCU, much as they gently ribbed the X-Men, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Reynolds’ disastrous stint in the DC world as Green Lantern, and lots of other pop culture icons in the first two Deadpool movies. But Wernick also states confidently, “Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool,” when asked about writing for the frequently raunchy, off-color character within the family-friendly confines of the Mouse House.

“Don’t worry about that,” adds Reese. “They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”

Story and cast info for Deadpool 3 remain a secret of course, and the writers also declined to state whether they started their script from scratch or are using elements from an earlier draft by Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneaux and Lizzie Molyneaux-Loeglin that was commissioned in 2020. “We have an answer,” says Reese, “But we’re really not supposed to divulge any plot details.”

Reese, who says that the pair are working in a “secret vault under an ocean somewhere” on the Deadpool 3 script, also laughs when asked if their recent collaboration with Hemsworth on Spiderhead might lead to the actor pressing them for Thor to face off with Wade Wilson. “Oh man, if he did, we certainly couldn’t talk about it,” Reese says. “[But] it’d be super cool.“

They have got to have a reference to the other "Deadpool." I know there was the scene at the end of the last one, but...

 

Thank the good lord baby Jebus Wolverine and Deadpool finally! Way to pay off 2 movies worth of Hugh Jackman/Wolverine jokes.

Wolverine being in a dopey comedy Deadpool movie does not negate the awesomeness of Logan as a finale by the way. Because holy heck!

Honestly, at this point the fact that Wolverine as Jackman is back I think is way more important than if/how/what this slots into the MCU continuity/canon Phases etc. Which was always kind of tenuous anyway since we're talking about Deadpool and whole thing can be written off with one line.

I've seen John Krawsinki tweet at it like" Wait, is this our movie?" Knowing its a reference to the IF film they're making.

But I had a thought, this film is Deadpool in Multiverse of Madness like territory. With either Deadpool trying to revive or annoy Logan for whatever reason, Hugh wouldn't really be acting much except being annoyed with him which would be the whole joke of their relationship. Maybe its a flashback to the first X-Men movie, instead of Rogue he picks up, its Deadpool. And possibly John's Reed Richards is there for...whatever. You KNOW if he's in it DP is just going to call him Jim the whole time and make office jokes. Heck, it's Deadpool, they'll probably have the Office cast in it as a cameo, causing Reed to do one Jim-esque camera stare. Don't say it isn't possible.


Edit: I just imagined a Titanic scenario of Deadpool holding onto Logan. He says" I'll never let you go" and Logan says "Please do"

 

To repost twitterings from Jan 2021 (only 1 page back!), Reynolds already called the first draft of the movie when being developed at Fox was a Deadpool/Logan Road Trip movie "Rashomon style". Which means shifting POVs. Of course that was many drafts ago, Feige had two writers take a crack at it at Marvel Studios and now the original writers are back.





But y'know basic Deadpool and Wolverine road trip format seems like something that would stick.

Of course, I saw Hugh Jackman retweet with “Yeah. Sure.” So I thought okay, another joke, and did not bother watching Ryan’s announcement until hours later yesterday.

Looking forward to Logan & Wade’s reunion, bringing Cable back would be even sweeter too.
