Did you think Darth Vader was lying when he told Luke he was his father?

I guess this is a question for people who saw ESB in theaters. Back in 1980, a lot of people didn't believe Vader and the big question leading into ROTJ was:
Is Darth Vader really Luke's father?

Yes he is. His original identity is Anakin Skywalker. He married Padme Amidala and they had twins. They named them Leia and Luke. This is all played out in the PT ;)

I saw ESB in 1980 and always thought Vader was telling the truth.

    HE IS HIS FATHER DUMBASS!!!!

mattalgrand, It's obvious that this topic has gone over your head. I'm not sure if you know this but there was a 3 year gap between the theatrical releases of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. During that time, nobody knew for sure if Vader was lying when he told Luke that he was his father. A lot of fans did think he was lying until Yoda revealed the truth in Return of the Jedi.

The point of this thread is to discuss our memories of those days and that particular uncertainty of the saga. I thought this was clear enough in the first post.

So the next time you flame someone, at least make sure you read their previous posts and understand the thread you're posting on.

i always knew all these little spoilers from the ot becuase i am so young. i had heard the way too often misquoted, "luke, i am your father", line on tv and what ever hundreds of times before i even saw the movies. and now with the prequals i check the spiolers on the web, so i am doomed to forever never have a fresh, spioler free, star wars film experience.

and now im watching older popular movies that i identify with because they have been refered to so many times in popular culture; especialy from the simpsons and conkers badfur day video game(there are tons of movie references in that game, besides the ovious ones).

I didn't see ESB in theaters...
... but when I first saw it (I was unspoiled), I thought Vader was bluffing.

I didn't think Vader was lying. It actually made sense to me when Vader said that.

I remember thinking he was lying. my best friend and I argued for two years about who lied obi or vader.
the point was so disputed and everybody had their own poinion that lucas was forced to add a scene spelling it out. it should have been enough in esb that vader tells luke. he belives it and thats it. but the fans were so frustrated that lucas had to actually tell us that vader was lukes father.
it took me a long time to accept it.

I think I remember Lucas addressed this in a interview, before TPM came out.

He said that they found most children under a certain age (around 10 or something) thought Vader was lying. With children over that age, the majority believed Vader's claim.

His point was that, typically, the older someone was the more easily they tended to accept that someone seemingly as utterly evil as Vader could've produced such a good guy as Luke.

To make sure that the issue was settled, Lucas and Marquand agreed to have Yoda confirm the statement in ROTJ.
