I actually wrote a fan fiction about that very subject. It was a fascinating moment in the film that could have gone in a completely different direction.

Nope. Padme did not fall far on a low gravity planet, they saw her hit and roll which also softens the blow. She only had the wind knocked out of her.

Padme was more than capable of taking care of herself. What was Anakin going to do? Hold her hand?

As for the mission - why were they protecting Padme in the first place? There was an assassin after her. Well guess what? The assassin was dead, those who had hired him - the Trade Federation - were on the run, she was no longer in danger - the mission had changed. And so their priorities. A war was at stake.

P.S. Obi-Wan falling in Coruscant and having Anakin rescue him was MUCH different. Perhaps had Obi-Wan landed as safely as Padme had, he WOULD have waved Anakin on to follow Zam. A war wasn't at stake. :p

DarthSil, could you PM or post a link? I'd love to read your fic. :)

I wanted Anakin to go after her. Not only because I'm a hopeless romantic :)p), but also that I felt it was his duty; he'd been advised by Mace (certainly higher up on the Jedi chain than Obi) to protect the senator at all costs. Obi-Wan should have recognized that that was Anakin's mandate.

No... if he did, he wouldn't get his arm chopped off and get closer to the Dark Side.

I disagree. Padme hit pretty hard. Its not just the distance from the ground. She also fell from a moving aircraft. Thats like saying..."It's Ok to jump from a moving train, it's only like a 4 foot drop to the ground."

If the train is stationary, or moving at low speed, sure the fall wouldn't hurt...but if the train is moving at top speed, you are in a world of pain.

The gunship she was on had to be traveling at a high rate of speed because they were chasing Dooku. She should have broken every bone in her body, roll or not.

    Nope. I wanted to scream at Anakin though for thinking of leaving poor Obi-Wan to fight Dooku alone. 8-}

Don't know what to tell you, Devil. If Geonosis had been earth I would agree with you. However, it's not. The gunship was dodging the fighters and actually hit the dune, so some of its forward momentum was slowed, that's why the passengers could see Padme fall rather than missing it as the ship zipped by at 100+ kmh/mph. And GL himself - or someone - said the only reason the Geonosians can fly is that the planet gravity is much lower than that of earth. So extrapolating from that - though Geonosis obviously doesn't have moon gravity, it's something like - oh, heck, I don't know something more than the moon and much less than the earth - though she fell out of a fast moving ship, she wouldn't have hit with much more than the force of her full weight.

Then she hit an unstable surface and rolled.

Plus this is SW. Tell me all the Jedi can take hit after hit and not even so much as bruise and - in AOTC in particular - Coruscant isn't Geonosis. Tell me you believed Anakin could land on Zam's ship after falling 50 plus stories and not break every bone in HIS body.

Weight is one thing, but mass and inertia are still in effect. If the ship had hit the dune hard enough to slow it down, then everyone would have been thrown forward. Besides, I don't see anyone taking big leaping steps across the ground. If the gravity isn't sufficiently less enough to affect simple walking, then it isn't going to have any effect on a falling body traveling at high speed.

I wouldnt like it if anakin went after her, this scene shows the controversy between obi wan and anakin, which is much more important.

Didn't know the planet had less gravity.

They were. Check out the movie. The ship hit sideways on the dune - thus everyone fell to the side and Padme with a trooper or two, nearest the entrance, fell out.

Besides, I don't see anyone taking big leaping steps across the ground.

You're thinking of the moon's lack of serious gravity. Geonosis is not that. You don't see people taking big steps, you see man-sized bugs flying.

If the gravity isn't sufficiently less enough to affect simple walking, then it isn't going to have any effect on a falling body traveling at high speed.

    See above.

    "See above."

You also see Jedi walking normally. If the effect of gravity is sufficiently close enough to that of Coruscant to allow for this, then you can't turn around and use it to account for Padme's "soft" landing. (either on the sand, or on the reek :) )

I would have liked to see Anakin step it up and go after Dooku regardless if Padme were knocked from the ship or not. It would have been his ultimate test for his Jedi fortitude to go on dispite what happned to Padme in that moment in time. But of course he failed the test because he had to be convinced....

I would have wanted Anakin to go save her if she had been in actual danger. But Padme falls onto sand. And it's not like a huge drop either. I have no idea why Anakin freaked out like that. Obviously, she's not going to be badly hurt.

The turth yes I did want him to go after Padme. But I still like the way it was done in having Anakin and Obi-wan go after Dooku still.

Amien, get on a train car....wait for it to reach top speed, then leap from the car and see how soft a landing you get.

well... the first time I saw AOTC at the big screen, I had said to myself, "I wouldn't of left her behind like that!" but then Obi-Wan did make a good point that he told to Anakin. I'm not saying that I'm glad that Anakin left her like that, but it was his duty as a Jedi Apprentice, to obey his Jedi Master.

It is a bit of a cruel choice to make, considering that Padme had declared her love to Anakin. I was mostly dead center, since I already knew how the film was going to end.

I was simply concerned for Padme's safety.

Agreed. I'm just arguing the points of the people who think they can explain why Padme might not have been hurt in the first place. ;)

Hey, I know that real life physics have no place in Star Wars. I was just arguing the point that some were making.

"Since the gunship was so low, Padme wouldn't be injured because of soft sand.".

Its all good. Notice how no one is bringing up Anakin hitting the pavement after he leapt from Zam's speeder. :D

Or Padme biting the dust in the Arena battle. She gave a louder grunt there than in the subsequent sand-fall.

(BTW, I never liked Anakin's roll in that scene. At the very least, he should have rolled a few more times. Hell, Lucas could've had him cartwheel or even backflip down the street, a la "Highlander" or "Blade Runner." [face_laugh]

    (Sorry... [face_blush] )
