There is no "common ground of understanding" for enemies of liberty.

    What my esteemed colleague said.

I would vote for Roosevelt; he helped steer America through a worldwide threat.

Mr. Bush is currently doing the same, disagree as I might with some of his politics.

    Peace,

Currently "THEY" refers to the atrocity called "The Bush Administration" and their lapdogs called "Republicans" I was an active protester until I burnt out and there are way too many people that think that protesting a war in some way belittles the armed forces. My best friend is in Iraq...I know many others...I protest to save their lives not to insult or degrade. I have the highest respect for our soldiers AND contracted workers. However, since 9/11 America has taken on this type of "mass-market" patriotism. The weeks after 9/11 I was overwhelmed by the patiotism shown by all americans...then...they decided to use it to sell cars, submarine sandwiches, plastic flags...etc...and it disgusted me. Many people were on the fence about the 2004 elections...a lot of swing voters voted for Bush because they thought he would provide consistency in "these times" Then he gets reelected and 1/2 of his cabinet members "got the **** out of dodge" Bush has ridden the "9/11" train a little too much...sure we haven't been attacked in America since 9/11/01..BUT occured "75% of all suisice bombings have since 9/11"*...GREAT JOB BUSH...way to end terrorism!!!!!! And have any of you notice how Bin Laden is still free...this man needs dialysis every week and we can't find in in almost 4 years!!!!! Oh...yes...that's right...we don't care, we're too busy following shark attacks and who killed Natalie Holloway. (no offence to anyone touched by these tragedys) but whoever killed Natalie and all the sharks in the water didn't kill as many as the terrorists did...Saudi Arabian terrorists...from Saudi Arabia...NOT IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN...for you all that may have failed high school geography and believe the war in Iraq was justified....there were NO terrorists in Iraq before we started a war there! And every independent investigation has proved Saddam HAD NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION and had been incapable since the first Gulf War. So...would you call me unamerican?????

Except the problem with your entire post is that one shouldn't let the spectre of terrorism define their lives.

Or the spectre of the cold war, or the spectre of WWII, or the spectre of the Great War, or the spectre of the civil war, or whatever else pops up in human history.

It's true, since 9/11 I've watched movies, gone to the store, visited with my family, and debated politics.

It falls under the broad heading of "living one's life."

A little perspective goes a long way, my friend.

But there are people in this coutry that do let terrorism define their lives...
During the whole anthrax scare...every post office in the Washington D.C. area was a ghost town. I could walk in and head directly to a clerk...before it took 45 minutes to an hour. Also there is a post on these boards somewhere with a link to a CNN poll that shows that 40% of those polled feel we should let the government take basic rights from us if it is done in the name of homeland security or stopping terrorism. Not to mention the whole "color coded terrorist threat alert" that this administration uses to pass agenda. Before Nov. 2nd 2004(election day) the level was constantly going between yellow and orange to let voters know that terrorist are still out there and that Bush needs your vote, Ex-homeland security advisor Tom Ridge has gone on record to say he didn't feel a lot of those raised alerts were necessary.

Then Bush gets re-elected and ...7 months go by with no mention of the colored alerts...then Bush decided to campaign to extend the Patriot Act and...surprise, surprise they stated mentioning the Threat Level again on the daily news! Coincidence?

I live 20 miles from D.C. and worked in Downtown right after Sept. 11th...so some of you outside of the area might have a different perspective...needless to say this whole topic is handeled much differently in my area.

There's nothing wrong with being religious and saying it's against your religion to be anti-war...but when that religion says it's ok to be anti-American, or anti-whateveryourcountryoforigin, then you have to start deciding what to put first. However, Ali basically told the USA that he was going to disobey a command to fight, when other Americans had to, and he gets told he's one of the top Americans of our time? Nonsense.

That's like saying that Benedict Arnold is top 10 material. He went against his own government for his own purposes, which is legal, but ultimately told them by his own actions that he couldn't care less what they thought.
