Does anyone listen to medieval music? Could you recommend a good CD?

I would also suggest checking out Gary Stadler, John Doan, and The Dead Can Dance. All very beautiful ancient-esque artists.

    Cheers and blessed be!

Try also albums by Chanticleer... they are definitely a group of men and they sing everything from medieval to more modern stuff. They're really brilliant. Their Mexican Baroque album is my favorite.

There is also a great double CD called- 1000: A Mass for the End of Time. It's mostly chant from right before the year 1000 when people thought the world was going to end. There is both men and women on it. Definitely a must have.

I would like to point out to all that I recently got a CD or Gregorian Chant. Sung by NUNS!! See, the word of chant is out to get me . . . It's a good CD but still, where did the monks go?! Did the nun's eat them?

    darkknight_152002,

Thanks for the thread. I fear I can be pretty dull on the subject, though, because I rarely know what anything is called even though I commonly listen to the classical music station. But if I ever think of any intelligent comment or question I'll be sure to come by. :)

    _Vengeance_,

I have heard the Dead Can Dance before. My art teacher used to play them during class back in high scool. I've always meant to get some of their CDs but always manage to forget. Thanks for reminding me. :)

    RebelScum77,

I believe I've heard that mass before. But it was sung by all women I'm pretty sure . . . Though I imagine there's been more than one preformance of it.

"1000: A Mass For the End of Time" is an album by Anonymous 4. A group of 4 women doing sacred chant and polyphony.

Emerald Rose played at Dragon*Con last year. They play medieval Irish folk music.

Well, basically what others have said, and include:

Machaunt - Widely regarded as the most influential composer of the 14th century. Try to get his Mass of Notre Dame

Guido D'Arezzo - Father of musical notation

Leonin and Perotin - first noted composers of polyphony

Franco of Cologne - Inventor of mensural notation

These next ones may be good, but they are stepping a bit into the Renaissance.

    John Dunstable

    Josquin de Prez

    Palestrina

    Giovanni Gabrieli
