Does Obi-wan specifically stay on Tattoine to watch over Luke, or is he just hiding out?

Hey, this thread could go in either the prequels or the OT thread, but I thought having it in the OT thread is more appropriate.

Anyway, at the end of Episode III we see Obi-wan handing baby Luke to Beru, and then riding off. My question is this: Does he specifically stay on Tattoine for 20 years to watch over Luke because he thinks/hopes Luke will help him fight the Empire at a later time (which happens), or is Tattoine just a convenient, out-of-the-way place to hide out from the Empire, which is presumably exterminating all of the rest of the Jedi?! Or, is it both?

In ROTS, Obi tells Bail Organa (Leia's Dad) and Yoda, "I will take the boy to his family on Tatooine. i will watch him there" or somthing similar. They split up these kids because if Sidious found them he could have raised them to be some kind of Super Sith Twins. Part of their goal(and the majority of it) was to keep them out of the hands of the Emperor. I'm sure Obi-Wan didnt shun the possibility of one day training Luke. It was one of the first things he mentioned to Luke when he ran into him in ANH.

Bail Organa promises to keep in contact with ObiWan at the end of ROTS. He does this through Leia via R2D2's recording telling him the tide may be turning. Obi Wan figures there is no better time to see what luke is capable of.

stay on Tatooine to watch over Luke.

He definately has some interest in watching Luke. Keep in mind that Luke still had the Skywalker name, so if anyone ever found out that Padme had actually given birth, he might be in danger.

That is kind of backward logic. If they were worried about the name Skywalker they could have changed it and called him Luke Fett or Luke Solo or something. Maybe in GFFA "Skywalker" is a really common name, like "Jones" or "Smith" in the US or "Kim" or "Pak" in Korea! As for protectign him, it doesn't make much sense that they would choose his fathers gardians and the home he grew up in. And knowing that Vader wanted to kill all the Jedis it doesn't make sense that he would hide on Vader's home planet. Don't let these Lucas oversites ruin Star Wars for you!

thats a good point DarthPoppy but the thing is they had an advantage as Vader thought he was the last SKywalker bloodline. He wasn't looking for a SKywalker and never even worried about it since in ROTS he is told his wife dies without giving birth. Therefore Vader is just as in the blue as Luke is about his dad.

Both really. He knows the Empire won't care too much about Tatooine since it is in the outer rim, so he knows as long as he stays unseen and quiet all will be calm and he can watch over Luke.
