Okay, I thought it was about time we had one of these. I've seen a lot of questions about, "How do I spell . . . ?" and thought that maybe it was time "How do I spell . . .?" had a thread all its own. :)

This is the place where you ask those tough questions, like how to spell Wookiee (yes, it's two Es) or Myrkr (no second Y). You ask the question, we'll provide the answers on how to spell things. :)

Got it? Well, get spelling! :)

Note: You may also use this thread to clear up those confusing issues, like the difference between they're, there, and their, etc.

Anakin is just that! Not Anikan! :p Great thread idea Dana, I get frustrated when people spell things wrong.

What was wrong with Mely's hotline thread?

I'm unfamiliar with this hotline thread you've mentioned. I haven't seen anything of the sort in quite a while. Thus, I've started this thread. I suppose there's nothing wrong with the other thread. However, this thread is to directly address spelling (especially that of "Star Wars" names).

I'm pretty sure it's still active, Dana. :) The thread was page two.

    Good idea, though.

All right. Well, then, that will stay grammar, and this one's spelling. That's all there is to it. :)

Heh. I'm rather glad it got the title it did. I always thought Wookiee had only one 'e'. Thank goodness for Search-and-Replace.

One that gets me is the way some of our friends across the pond spell 'lightsaber' as 'lightsabre'. I can handle 'colour' and such without even noticing it... but for some reason 'lightsabre' just jars me right out of a fic. Oddly, just the word 'sabre' doesn't rattle me.

Okay, I'm done rattling my saber.

Yah, that was grammar. I get bugged by people writing things like "Corilan" or "alderen" almsot as much as things like "Shinning" or "Starred" bugs me. I hate misspelled things! Or gurl/girl.

This is a good idea, Dana. We should have a thread strictly for Star Wars names. It's something we've all needed help with at some point it time.

I'll admit to spelling colour/honour etc. the Canadian way...but I made a point of spelling lightsabER, rather than lightsabRE, no matter how much it makes my eye twitch, since that's the way it's spelled in the books ;)

Ah, yes. I forget that it's not just those across the pond, but a few on this side too.

but I made a point of spelling lightsabER, rather than lightsabRE, no matter how much it makes my eye twitch, since that's the way it's spelled in the books

I think that's the key. There are cultural and long-standing spelling differences for things like color/colour, but 'lightsaber' has an established spelling in the SW universe.

    I have to disagree.

the word Saber/sabre has been around far longer than Star Wars, and it, too, has a cultural spelling difference. Just as it doesn't bother me when people spell it Mystery Science TheatRE, even though the show itself says TheatER, I don't even blink over lightsabRE, however it may be spelled in the books. The books can't even decide the correct spelling for Ani/Annie, so they are hardly a universally reliable source to begin with.

And that word doesn't phase me either way. 'Lightsaber', however, is an invented term and has an entry in the official databank and such.

I won't begrudge an author for using it the other way... I just find it more difficult to immerse myself in a story when my eye stops every time I see the word.

I spell "cookiee" with two "E's" because of "wookiee". :D I never thought I spelled it wrong until someone told me "cookiee" looked funny. I had no idea what they were talking about. :p
