    Watch this

    YouTube mirror

I am personally creeped out, especially by the retouching. Thoughts about the video/the campaign?

Whoa. That video is pretty strong stuff.

And I like the ideas of the campaign. :)

Amazing video. It would have been even better if the model had actually been Leon Trotsky, of course.

It's not surprising, but it's sad. I mean, they retouched a promo photo of Katie Couric to make her look thinner. She's not exactly a large gal to begin with. I think it explains a lot about why so many women have crappy self esteem.

My favourite bit was when they stretched her neck.

I would have made her look like a giraffe.

I remember hearing about that a couple of months ago, they thinned her down by like 30 pounds! She was really upset about it.

Oh, they do that too. Those giraffes you see in National Geographic don't look that good in RL. Their necks are really 1/2 as long. No wonder they have issues with their appearance.

    So. . .

. . .you donate money so other women can have their images repaired this way? That's a nice charity.:)

Kidding. And in bad taste, I know.

Real women don't stand much of a chance when we know models are retouched considerably.

Sad we have to continually remind our daughters that they need not look like anything considered ideal by most to be beautiful.

I love what Dove is doing for women's self image--their commercials and paper ad campaigns are so uplifting. I've taking to buying a lot of Dove products to support it. I really applaud them--a good message and an excellent advertising campaign to boot!

Yah, I was shown this yesterday, actually. It's really sad, but I find it heartening in a way to know that even the models on TV and billboards don't look that different from me in real life. :p

I hate photoshop for the record. I don't really object to being touched up by makeup artists or whatever, but I HATE what photoshop's made possible.

In all seriousness, I have a suspicion that this whole Dove campaign is much like the DOW "Human Element" campaign. That is, they're serving a kind of indictment that they themselves are guilty of.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would have seriously pounded that woman prior to the photomagic voodoo. And after...she looks sorta like how anime would look in real life. No thanks.

Wow. I'm glad that we're starting to take the focus off almost unattainable standards for the average woman. Hopefully, they can get the message through to younger girls.

I disagree. I've seen their "Campaign for Real Beauty" ads for several years now. They feature pictures of curvy women, women with bellies and butts and boobs and hips and freckles and sun spots and imperfections. I don't know for a fact that these photos are un-retouched, but I doubt they go to drastic measures like the one in the video, if at all.

Besides, Dove sells primarily hygiene products, not makeup. Soap and deodorant and moisturizer promote cleanliness, not an unhealthy or unrealistic standard of beauty like those who sell foundation, concealer, eyelash curlers, mascara, liquid eyeliner, lipstick, hair dye etc. might and do.

They should show that Dove clip in schools. Everywhere. After the diving under the desk thing. Or maybe before.

I don't know about the retouching. But I do know that their models are still not "normal" sized. Just less of outliers than those in other companies commercials.

They are not "fat" but they are definitely normal sized. Shanel for example, would be considered HUGE for a model, but she's definitely not "less of an outlier," she is a normal sized woman.

    Same for Julie and Lindsey.

Now is Dove soap the same company as Dove chocolate?
