Now I didn't see anyone discussing this... C'mon we've been waiting since the PS3 came out for Tenkachi 4! And a co-worker told me about this P.S. Forgive the DP, I accidentally hit enter earlier than expected. Have mercy on me...
I’m not sure if it’s true but on the DBS Reddit they are saying the new show takes place between DBZ and DBS.
Yeah, at this point it's all speculation but I'm hearing that as well. There is this one Youtuber that I like named "Carthu's Dojo" and he did a breakdown of the trailer. Since it features what he is calling the "Demon Realm" and the new characters in said realm are reviewing footage of the Buu Saga, he speculates those characters may be getting revenge on our heroes because they weren't happy how that saga turned out. And according to a quick Google search there is a 4 year gap between the end of the Buu Saga and the start of Super so I can see now problem with a story being slotted in there. Personally, I only watched the Cell Saga from start to finish so I'm not super familiar with the Buu Saga. I'll have to see if there's a way to watch it. Edit: Looks like DBZ Kai is on Hulu. Sweet! Seems like all the Buu stuff it's the start of season 2 on Hulu. Can anyone confirm?
Yes, it’s “season 2” because for some reason Kai ended with the Cell saga and later came back solely to do the Buu saga. As you’ve only seen Cell start to finish… consider watching all of Kai, it cuts most of the crappy padding the anime had to do once Toriyama started to get really terse. DBZ has a couple of justly iconic filler episodes that Kai excises but they aren’t worth the stretching done to the regular material, IMO. Also the Kai HD mastering isn't as horrendous as what Funimation has done lately, so visually it's like... only cutting off some fingers and not the whole hand, I guess. I can see Daima filling the Buu to Super gap (there has to be one because Pan is only four at the end of Z, which is ten years later) but I’m not sure what they’re basing that speculation on.
Thanks @Ramza My brother was into the show back when they were originally airing and I remember being very turned off when an episode featured characters standing around and powering up the entire time. I honestly probably checked in and out of the Cell saga but I have more memory of it than any other saga which isn't much tbh. I was thinking of starting with season 1, but I just decided to just jump into S2. I watched eps 1 thru 3 while working out on the elliptical at the gym. It's definitely very cheesy and a little slow but if I recall what this show does right is that it makes you care about the characters before they fight otherwise you're not going to care about them when they fight.
No, but that's cool that they're doing that. Seems like it's only this Tuesday and Wednesday. I can't believe it came out 10 years ago. Crazy! *** Watched S2 4-7 of DBZ Kai. Finally at the World Tournament. No fighting has started, seems like maybe it'll start with episode 8. I did find it heartfelt when Goten and Goku met for the first time. Freakin' Chi-Chi yelling at Videl in one episode about her trying to marry Gohan and then in the next episode she finds out she's rich and then wanting Gohan to marry her. So cheesy yet pretty funny.
So over the past week, I've been slowly but surely been making my way through DBZ Kai (watching 2-3 episodes per day). I'm at episode 25 where Buu just hatched at the end and Goku/Vegeta are still off fighting somewhere. Vegeta says twice to Goku during their fight that he wants him dead / wants him to die. Since Goku is technically already dead and just on Earth for 24 hours, can he be killed again? And if he dies again, where does he go? Does his forfeit his 24 hours and he just goes back to Otherworld? If this is addressed in later episodes please don't let me know. I just thought it was odd that Vegeta is yelling at a man with a halo to die.
I’d say there’s a few things at play there: (Possibly most important) Despite looking great that fight is all filler so almost nothing they say is “approved dialogue.” Toriyama mostly didn’t show it. Vegeta is possessed by angry rage magic so, y’know, he’s not necessarily going to talk sense. The super technical actually it’s fine explanation is that if you destroy a spirit form you erase people from existence. I have no memory of if this is ever stated outright or is in some reference book or just ascended fanon but it is the consensus.
@Jedi Bluth I watched a couple episodes but it fell off my radar due to not knowing the release schedule. Regarding item 3, it is addressed later in the Buu Saga on the World of the Kais that if Vegeta with a halo dies then he'd be erased from existence. Speaking of the Buu Saga, I just finished it yesterday. Random thoughts: Gohan really gets the short end of the stick. He gets sidelined to get a "power-up" on the World of the Kais, goes to fight Buu for 5 minutes then gets absorbed, so definitely a big let down. The focus on fusion was odd but fine. Some moments were a little too childish for my take. It's also an odd choice that they kind of take a **** on it when they can just use the potara earrings and the dance isn't needed. I did like that being inside Buu undid the "magic" of the potara and separated Goku and Vegeta. It was nice to get the backstory of Kid Buu and Bibidi but it was so late in the season. It would have been nice to get earlier. We are shown that Kid Buu absorbs two Kais and after absorbing the 2nd Kai becomes "fat" and "playful" Buu. Sadly, we don't see how/why he gets sealed in a ball nor what happens to Bibidi. Then in the present saga, "fat" Buu is "disconnected" inside of Kid Buu and later spits him out. Now that we have a good fat Buu in the world, shouldn't he spit out the two Kais he absorbed? Would they still be alive in Buu after all this time or did they die inside of him? If the Kais are still inside him, and he did spit them out, would "fat" Buu lose his sense of self and his good nature and become Kid Buu again? I did a little bit of reading and I guess this is seemingly addressed in the manga with the Moro arc. At the end of the saga, Goku takes Uub as his student. At this point, there are no stories beyond this correct? Everything that happens in Super and the current manga is happening in the 10 years between, right?
The only thing currently set after the end of Z is GT and I don’t think anyone kids themselves into thinking Toriyama considers that canon. Personally my theory is that Toriyama just likes that ending a lot as a final statement on Dragon Ball. In the original art (not the more recent revised versions of the chapter) Goku and Uub fly off towards the left, which is all symbolic and ****.
Oh **** there's a DB thread here???????????? Sweet Well, the most Toriyama has said of GT's "canonicity" is that it's a "grand side story" (he literally used the English words "side story" lol) in his commentary for the DVD box set. One could argue that that's a step above how he described the movies he didn't write (that is, being another world/dimension from his work.) He seems to have a positive opinion of GT, but yeah, as far as it comes to his idea of DB continuity, he wouldn't take it into account. Until Akio Iyoku tells him it's popular and he goes "Yeah sure why not" (lmao Daima) As far as fan communities and channels go, r/dragonballsuper is.... lacking, imo, in terms of quality control. r/dragonball is much more meticulously curated. Youtubers in general are also very, very iffy. Prone to clickbaity crap and misinformation (deliberate or otherwise). I don't participate in it myself, but Kanzenshuu is a very well-managed, comprehensive fan community Purely speculation, but I really can't help wondering if Super won't go past the original manga's ending. SH is already really close to it in terms of the timeline, and there's still a lot of potential to explore with new characters and new developments for existing characters. Personally, I hope it does, but fans have been talking about it for nearly a decade as it is lol
There's only one set of Dragon Ball YouTubers I have any patience for and unsurprisingly they're the only ones brave enough to say what we're all thinking:
I was watching a YT video made by "Carthu's Dojo". He seems to know his stuff. Anyway, timeline wise, Super starts 5 years after the Buu Saga so the assumption right now is that Daima happens in between that 5 year span. And I guess the rest of the events of Super including the manga content that hasn't made it to animation happens in the remaining 5 years before the end of the show. That random dino egg episode where Goku almost missed the party seemed super odd. Here's one episode that take place 6 months later. Now here are 2 episodes that take place 10 year later. And done. I watched some of these and it's seems to be a lot of inside jokes and poking fun at the actual events. You could call it abridged, but it's more parody than anything.
It’s a non-profit fan based parody. Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Super are all owned by Funimation, Toei Animation, Shueisha, and Akira Toriyama. Please support the official release.
There's no confirmation yet of Daima's placement in the timeline (or if it's even considered canonical) To be precise, Super begins 4 years after Buu's defeat and spans a number of years. Buu is defeated in Age 774, with the original ending in Age 784. Goku and co meet Beerus in Age 778, and we're now veeery close to the end of that ten year stretch. Super Hero is set in 783, so there's only about a year or so left before we reach the 28th TB
They take place in between Broly and Super Hero (the former of which gets skipped over! Toyotaro did my guy dirty.)
