Dumb Aleck

    The phrase "Smart Aleck" has always bothered me. For one, I have never known whether or not I'm supposed to have the k on the end, or if I even have the first letters right. But that's not important.


    Mostly, I've been bothered by the fact that smart aleck comments aren't smart.

    What's the point of rewarding someone's intentional misinterpretation of something by calling them a "smart" aleck, or alec, or whatever? I submit that we should change this idiom to "dumb aleck". Anyone with me?

    the real term anyway was always Smart @$$, so I just use that, slap everyone that says smart alec
