    Once again, could have done withough Arwen.

    I actually liked the TTT poster (teaser I think). The one with the tower of Orthanc really close on the left, and the tower of Bara-Dur in the distance on the right, with a huge army in between them. I thought it was very ominious.

    4. Serenity (2005)

    [image=http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000BW7QWW.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg]

    Even before seeing the movie Serenity, I knew this was beautiful cover art. I like how River is the main person on the cover and that it's broken into three parts. You have your blues and your yellows blending together. And the title logo centered. It takes away from the mysticism that the theatrical poster holds. Which is good, since this is more suitable for DVD. I'm not sure this would've worked for the theatrical poster. We also get to see some action set pieces flourishing. Luckily they manage to blend in several events unlike Matrix Revolutions cover. Good cover for a decent movie.

    If you know the characters, this is okay. If you don't, it's seriously bland. It doesn't grab you, make you curious. And because this film failed at the box office despite good reviews and a rabid fan base, you have to say the marketing may have been at fault.

    Curiousness can be a good thing. The one thing that really grabs me is River's seductive pose and all the battles.

    I agree with Zaz about marketing. The only place I heard about Serenity was here and through some small blurbs in entertainment weekly. I never saw a trailer or a poster.

    The cover is too busy. River doesn't look that hot in the movie.

    The DVD art is different from the posters you'd see in movie theaters.

    Personally I love the DVD design. River looks odd, but the layout and everything else is awesome.

    While I wish that they went with a different cover, I like this one well enough.

    To be perfectly honest I think every image in this thread (with the possible exception of the bland, but at least tasteful FOTR poster) is flat out horrible. The lack of compositional sense, that ugly fuzzy-edged photoshop feel, the complete lack of imagination beyond "how many more heads can we fit on this thing?"; I hate them all! And that Serenity one is absolute worst of all - I mean really, mixing blue and gold? Those colours simply do not work well next to each other.

    If you want great DVD art, Criterion are the first place to look. Almost every one of theirs is a stylish, unique piece of art that I'd happily stick on my wall. Lucas's THX DVD was surprisingly brilliant as well.

    Agreed on Serenty's marketing, Zaz. In my country, I have never seen a trailer or poster for that movie whatsoever.

    I haven't seen the movie, so I can't really judge the DVD cover, but I agree with Nrf_Hrdr: the combination of the cool blues with the warm yellow/gold doesn't look too good. It basically devides the cover in two halfs: as if this is a two DVD box with two different movies.

    Worst. Cover. Ever.

    Looked like something for a generic B-grade sci-fi flick. Maybe that's what Universal thought they had on their hands though.

    5. The Sixth Sense (1999)

    [image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004BZIY.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg]

    It's a dark cover and it's too busy. You pretty much Osment and Willis' floating head diagonal from each other with a lot of black space. I like how the faces glow and do like Osment's expression here, showing the fear that awaits the viewer. Does it do the movie justice? I think so. I like the Sixth Sense logo and typographic kerning here. I definitely like the burst of red, orange and yellow in the upper right hand corner. It works for the genre for any other kind of film, I'd say no. Decent cover.

    Considering the originality of the movie itself, not very imaginative, but I think I know why. Untried director, and unknown kid actor, so their thought is--play up the film's only star, which is Willis.

    back to Serenity: i thought the DVD cover was horrible. River's head doesn't quite look like it's on her neck quite right (like they shifted it over slightly). (and they played up some sense of sex appeal, which the character isn't really supposed to have.
    the space battle scene makes it look like Serenity has guns. the huge army of Reavers looked more like a field of ubervamps from Buffy than anything we saw in the movie.
    the art makes the movie look like schlock sci-fi.

    The Sixth Sense DVD cover = meh. It does not do the movie justice. On the other hand, the 2-disc Vista Series DVD is much, much better.

    The best DVD cover for one of Shyamalan's movies is easily Unbreakable.

    I think the best DVD cover art belongs to the James Bond film collection. Classic. I also like the art to the Star Trek DE/SE boxes. Very nice.

    The SW films also have great covers.

    6. For Richer or Poorer (1997)

    [image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0783226896.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg]

    I like how this resembles the old country photo of the man and the woman. The background I'm not too crazy about and neither the text. At least they got the actor's name above the actor (not like the Island). Good shot of Allen and Alley together. Obviously gives that comedic vibe without question. You can't take it too seriously with their expressions and that they're portraying Amish. Okay cover.

    The "American Gothic" pose is okay, but the cover doesn't tell you much about the movie...

    Thats kind of the problem with a "DVD Artwork" thread isn't it.

    Sure you won't run into that problem with every DVD you talk about (who even knew there was a For Richer or Poorer DVD) but with Hollywood's insatiable double (or triple or quadruple) dip mentality you could probably devote an entire thread to just one DVD's various covers.

    Since we were just talking about it look at the Sixth Sense.

    You've got the Collector's series you discussed. Then you have the Vista Series that StarDude brought up. Amazon also has a Platinum edition (though it looks like it might be a foreign release) and finaly you have the actual foreign release (which frankly is a pretty tight cover).

    It might be neat in the future to look at some of the various covers that an individual release can have (another good example would be the Spider-man films that have separate covers for Fullscreen and Widescreen releases). The different covers would appeal to the different audiences the different DVDs appeal too and that would be interesting to discuss as well.

    The Sixth Sense cover looks a bit weird: the elements (Willis, Osment, the text and the streak of yellow) seem positioned at random. The cover does show what kind of movie it is though.

    The For Richer Or Poorer cover looks nice. As Moleman said; it does have the names above the actors, which most movies don't and annoys the hell out of me. I think it does give something away about what the movie is about, but it could be a little more "cheerfull" the brownish background makes it look more serious looking than the movie is.
