Why don't they just do that with all of them? Nothing I hate more than realizing I have a fullscreen version about the time I get it out of the package...

Because 2 versions of the film on the disc takes up precious storage capacity. You get more special features (commentary, outtakes, featurettes, etc.) if there's only one version. I like what they did with Big Fish; only the anomorphic WS version was included. Suprisingly FS/FF editions are big sellers/renters, but I suspect this is most due to consumers who just don't care which version they get. Then again, my dad prefers FS/FF, because he's wrong on these matters. Nonetheless, Blockbuster needs to quit buying so many FS versions. The Hickory Hollow location will stock like 80% FS if it's available in 2 versions, while the Green Hills location will carry 90-100% in the WS edition. Then again I have a co-worker who used to buy both versions at the same time. There's just no need for that.

Hopefully, if you're looking for the Deals of the Week update you'll sift through these comments and find the needed report above. Bye for now.

"Peter Pan: See a washed-up James Bond (Tim Dalton) "

Umm, that's not Timothy Dalton. Its Jason Isaacs. He also played the villain in "The Patriot" w/ Mel Gibson, a sargent in "Black Hawk Down" w/ Ewan McGregor, & also plays Lucious Malfoy in "Harry Potter" 2,3, & 4(just announced). I personally also thought he would have made a great younger version of Grand Moff Tarkin, but alas, GL has selected an unknown (probably on looks alone) of whom I've only seen pictures of.

This Live action version of Peter Pan was probably the best live version, I've seen so far. I saw it w/ my girlfriend & her daughter. Kids will love it. :)

FYI: Samurai Jack is created by the same animators that did the Clone Wars cartoon series.

If you're buying Party of Five looking for Jennifer Love Hewitt, you'll be disappointed. Her character didn't debut until the 2nd season of the show.

As for the FS/WS debate: I think for many people with small TVs, they have to go with full screen. Otherwise, you're giving up quite a bit of image when you don't have much screen to start. Also, I don't think many Americans really grasp the spectacle of film as well as Europeans do. I was hoping that when Titanic was released on video, it would only be released in WS and would start a trend in that direction. However, Cameron filmed the movie in a special way that gave him more shot above and below the WS shot for use in the P&S version.

Wow, always thought it was Timothy Dalton in Peter Pan, but the Patriot's villian is indeed in that film. Yeah, Tuesday afternoon I realized I screwed up Jen Hewitt and Neve Campbell (never watched the show was just in a hurry and didn't get the chance to fact check). Also, I found better prices at your local Wal-Mart, but due to an illness I was away from the computer until now. So here's the update, all prices are for Wal-Mart:

The Last Samurai: is a low $14.88
    Peter Pan: is $15.88
Bernie Mac & Party of Five: are each $33.88
    Gilmore Girls: is $36.88

Hope you haven't opened the package if you want to return the title. Untill later

When I only had my old 19" tv from high school I hated WS videos because I had to sit about 2' from the screen. When I got the 34' TV and DVD player I picked up the WS directors cut of 'The Abyss'- and have been picking up WS DVDs ever since!

I'm diging the TV shows that are showing in WS, too.

This week I hit the local Wal-Mart to help you find the best price. Because many Wal-Marts (WMT) don't price DVDs the same (these prices reflect Hickory Hollow's WMT), I'm going to include the 2nd place info too. For the week of 5/9/04 to 5/15/04:
Scary Movie 3: (WS & FS Versions) "Great trilogies come in threes." WMT: $14.88
2nd place: Best Buy, Target(?) & Circuit City have it for $15.99. Also BB will sell you SM3 and either one of the previous films, 2 for $25. CC also has this offer and will give you all 3 films for $35 for those who missed them before.
Friends: The Series Finale: The show that defines a successful series (& doesn't suck) hits WMT for $7.87. Includes 2 versions of final show, pilot, and more.
2nd place: CC has it for $7.99.
The Waltons (Season 1): Catch-up on the early adventures of John Boy and everyone else on Walton's Mountain for $29.97 at WMT for the 5-disc set.
    2nd place: CC's price is $34.99.
    Hanna Barbera Golden Collections:
    The Jetsons (Complete 1st Season):
Catch the futuristic fun on the 24 episode, 4-disc set at WMT for $33.87.
    2nd place: CC wants $34.99.
Jonny Quest (Complete 1st Season): Same as above, except 26 episodes. WMT wants $48.64, while 2nd place: CC wants $49.99.
Van Helsing: The animated version of the box-office smash is $9.99 at BB & Target.
X-Files (Season 9): See how it all ends on this 7-disc set for $69.99 at Best Buy.
Survivor (Season 1): The first 14 episodes if the series that jump started US reality TV for prime-time is out in a 5-disc set for $34.99 at Target & CC. The sales of this release are to test the waters for future reality show releases on DVD.
Invader Zim: The series that Lokey asked about long ago is out on a 2-disc set for $15.99 at Best Buy.
The Godfather (single film release): If you missed the boat on the complete collection last year (for shame), you can grab the best film EVER for $12.99 at CC & Target. CC has the complete 5-disc set for $49.99.
...And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself: The Antonio Banderas TV project is $14.99 at BB.
Independence Day (Limited Edition): As if there aren't enough versions of this film out there, this versions comes with a free movie pass for the up-coming Day After Tomorrow. Grab it at CC for $12.99.
Shrek-tacular deal: Shrek 2-pack features original film & an all-new "Shrek" adventure in 3D. Plus, a bonus sneak peek at "Shrek 2." 4 pairs of 3D glasses included. $16.99 at BB & CC.
The Adventures of Johnny Lingo: Never heard of this kids flick, but Target advertises it for $15.99.
    BB's 2 for $15 deal: '80's film deal
CC's $9.99 deals: Gladiator, Reign of Fire, Paid In Full, The Recuit, Jeepers Creepers 2, & Braveheart.
    Target's $10 deals: Scary Movie 1 & 2, The Hot Chick, & O Brother Where Art Thou?

That's the deals this week. Since this report includes WMT these must be the lowest price save for a possible lower price on TV seasons at Sam's Club. Later!

Wow, that's a $1 less than when I checked the website on Monday. Their ad indicates that the price is $14.99, but I find the website is a much better indicator of the price they'll charge.

BTW, the Shrek version is the Full Screen version & the Shrek 3-D is Widescreen & only 30 minutes long. If you have the original version already, it doesn't seem worth the money to buy this one.

Sorry for the delay, I promise to post sometime today, but it may be later around primetime tonight (mostly reruns except for the Seinfeld special on Ch. 4). It appears that Wal-Mart has once again ruled the day against the BB, CC, and Target money-lust. Circuit City appeared to have the next best price. More to come...

Wanted to get this out a little earlier this week. It seems that this is the week that all the stores are saying, Hail to the King, baby!. Standard abbreviations apply: CC=Circuit City, BB=Best Buy, WMT=Wal-Mart. For the week of 5/23/04 to 5/29/04:

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (theatrical version): The winner of 11 Academy Awards is being sold by everyone, so it's a little difficult to (pun intended) "crown a king" on this one. Basically everyone is offering $5 off if you also buy a $4.99 back of Duracell batteries. Walgreens offers $5 off (w/ coupon from Sunday's ad), but doesn't offer a price so I'm going to assume $19.99 & hope for a $14.99 price with coupon. Target is advertising a price of $14.99 & including Free Act II popcorn. BB & CC want $15.99, but BB will give you a Free Entertainment Weekly Commerative Book. K-Mart also sells it for $15.99 (WARNING: They usually only carry FS versions for this type of promotion) and will sell you Frequency starring Dennis Quaid for $4.99. Expect a slightly under $15 price from Wal-Mart. Early Purchase: The following stores advertise have this title available at Midnight tonight/Tuesday AM: Walgreens & (possibly) Wal-Mart.

LOTR Trilogy: The WS theatrical versions are available in a 6-disc set for $56.99 at BB. BB will also give you the Entertainment Weekly mentioned above.

Northern Exposure (Season 1): See the funny side of Alaska (remember I went to HS there!) in this 2-disc set that features unique packaging with a small, orange, & zippered parka-like cocoon around the DVD title. CC advertises the title for $34.99. Intend to check WMT for lower price tomorrow.

Saving Private Ryan (60th Anniv. of D-Day Commemorative Edition): The Tom Hanks film that should have been given the Oscar over that dreadful Shakespeare film is back for $19.99 for the 2-disc set at all locations (CC,BB,Target,etc.). The 2-disc version includes "Inside look with the filmmakers," "Making of a platoon & cast boot camp," "Re-creating D-Day," and much more. Also available is The WWII Collection Gift set. This 4-disc set includes the WWII films "Price for Peace" & "Shooting War" as well as a collectible book. This gift set is $34.99 at CC.

Underworld (Unrated Director's Cut): One of Kir Kanos' favorite recent films is back in a 2-disc set for $23.99 at BB, but Wal-Mart MAY have it for less. This extended version includes a 48-page mini-comic book & hours of unseen features.

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (Season 6): SMG is back sticking it to the undead in this 6-disc set for $45.99 at BB, CC, & Target. BB will knock $10 off when you purchase another season of Buffy (S1: $29.99, S2-5: $45.99).

Cheers (Season 3) & Frasier (Season 3): These 2 series are back in 4-disc sets for 34.99 each at CC.

Bubb Ho-Tep (Collector's Edt.): Since one of our newer members asked, this film is available for $19.99 at BB & CC.

Larry the Cable Guy: Git-R-Done: The Blue Collar Comedy Tour star brings this comedy special to you for $9.99 at BB.

New Release for $19.99 (everywhere), but no special price: Welcome to Mooseport, Club Dread (from creaters of Super Troopers), Shade, & Cruel Intentions 3.

CC's $12.99 each deals: Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Pirates of the Caribean, & Lion King 1.5.

That'll do it for this week. I'll try to post a WMT update tomorrow. If any of you find other deals on LOTR or any of the other new releases, then post'em up. Untill then...

BTW, Harry Potter & POA soundtrack will be released tomorrow too [face_pumpkin] . Circuit City will have it for $11.99 . Best Buy will most likely have it too, but at what price, I don't know. Also, don't expect to find this at Target just yet. For some reason, they tend to not get their new Soundtracks on the shelves the day they are supposed to. I don't know why this is.

Also, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer (Season 6) is a complete dud, in my opinion. They should have ended the series with season 5, instead of dragging it out for two long agonizing seasons [face_money_eyes] . But, if you are just dying to see what a decomposed Sarah Michelle Gellar looks like [face_skull] , or what Willow looks like as Darth Rosenberg [face_devil] , or maybe watch a geek get his skin ripped clean off his body [face_sick] , then ENJOY! [face_shame_on_you]

Yes. I very much like the new face icons! [face_flag]

Scott, I TOTALLY agree with you on Buffy 6. I did not watch season 7 at all couse of Season 6. The only bright point in 6 was the funniest moment in all of Buffy- Spike's "naked push-ups in bed".
But because of Catherine I am forced to still spend $$ on season 6. It appears that noone has it on sale. Even WalMart has it for $46. So Amazon has won my business with a price of $38.

And estimation of the WalMart LOTR price was right. $14.88.
