That's a ton of money to be generated by a DVD and a game in one week. :)

Glad I could help with that. :p

Hey Half-wits..doing good here. (go chargers!!! that was awesome)
I'm expecting good numbers from ROTS dvd in the end. A lot of people will get it now but plenty of people haven't gotten it yet. Sw has staying power as we all know...That article said that SW costumes were the number 1 sellers for Halloween. That says something for a 28 year old story. It will be a big Xmas present for people.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but if the DVD and video game combined for $210 million, there were more than 5.3 million units sold.

<<Sources estimate first-week DVD sales of "Sith" in the U.S. came in at 5.3 million units.>>

What sources? Post a link to them or I will conclude that you're just kidding.

Do the math...$210 million.....the DVDs probably sold at 9 to 1 pace over the vid game, so, about 500,000 BF2 vid games were sold, and between 12-13 million DVDs were sold.

If ROTS DVD sold only 5.3 units, then the DVD take would be only around $80 million !! For a whole week??? AOTC sold $75 million it's first day! What, AOTC sold better than ROTS? I don't think so. That would mean that the BF2 vid game would have sold $130 million, or about 2.6 million units ($50 each)????? No way, brother.

I'm not gonna take anyone's word on actual DVD sales until they can provide a link to a reliable source.

Okay....the 5.3 million number comes from a HollywoodReporter.com story. However, the author of the report is vague on his "sources". He doesn't give them. Their estimate seems too low for the U.S./Canada for all the hoopla over the DVD. Anything is possible, of course, but my guess is that it sold twice the low unit estimate.

Does it really matter how many they've sold?

I mean, if it sells poorly it's not like they won't make a sequel or something...

Why can't they give us the units sold for the DVD. I don't really care about the game. I don't play them. I just wnat to know how many units the DVD sold. Why clump both together. Make sit look like it really did not do well when you have to put it with the game.

Well, based on how much the DVD and vid games have sold, so far, the DVD has to have sold more than 12 million units among the countries, including the U.S., listed in the initial sales promotion. That is very good. I believe that most DVD sales charts are in worldwide sales, not just U.S./Canada. I will check on this later.

Interesting that there are some who come in here, pretending to be SW fans, and are "gleefull", that they think the DVD is not doing well. What makes people like that tick? I guess they like "poking a stick" in the eyes of fans, who knows?

Eventually, by New Year's Day, ROTS will be not only the No.1 movie of the year, but also the No. 1 DVD seller of the year, IMHO. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

I'm with you, Marek. Something is fishy. How could AOTC have sold about as much in one day than ROTS has in a week? ROTS is much more popular than AOTC with fans and casual fans, and it is a better film by far. And, from personal experience, when I go into various stores, I notice that ROTS is selling well....very well.
I agree that we need to wait for a more definitive report.

First of all, that 5.3 number sounds like it was pulled out of someone's nether regions. At $210 Million for both the movie and the game, there's no way in heck Battlefront 2 sold $204,700,000. That's just over 4 million games. [face_plain]

Secondly, while I question the source it's against the ToS to attack the poster providing this information. Everyone can have their say.

    Lets see here...

Lets say that 1,000,000 copies of Battlefront II were sold in the first week...

    $1,000,000 x $50.00 = $50,000,000 Million Dollars...

...and if the above number is true, then that would leave 160 Million for the DVD portion of the Total Cume of both ROTS and BFII...

so, 160mil/16 dollars per DVD (rough average-price-per-copy guesstimate) =10,000,000 Million Copies (est) of the DVD sold during the first week!!!

    I like my guesstimate numbers!!! ;) :D

EDIT: To anyone that might know... Just HOW GOOD would 10million copies of the DVD sold in the first week be??? [face_thinking]

    well 10mil units,

problem is that the FIGURE is WORLDWIDE,

Xeno and Marek, if the BF2 game is selling 40% higher than BF1 (according to LucasArts), then that would put it at approx. 365,000 units (using last years's numbers for SW trilogy/BF1 vid game sales). So, I think assuming that it sold 1 million copies might be a little off.

    So, 360,000 X 50 = $18 million

subtract that from 210 million, you get : $192 million

Now, most places were selling ROTS DVDs for $14.67 - $14.99. There is some variation. Some bought the bonus disc at Wal Mart, which added $5 to the total. But, let's use your $16 average.

    192,000,000 / $16 = 12 million units sold

Now, that number includes all the other countries listed in the Fox press release, but one can assume that the significant majority of those DVD sales were in the domestic market. However, aren't most of the yearly DVD sales charts, like the one on leesmoviesinfo.net, showing TOTAL sales, which includes both domestic & international units sold?

So, yes, 5.3 million ESTIMATE for U.S/Canada sales seem a tad too low.

I'd guess that 5.3m figure (if correct) is for domestic (U.S. & Canada) only.

Why are you so eager to see SW fail? You realize you are posting on a Star Wars message board, right? And what do you mean "u star wars fans"? Are "u" not a Star Wars fan as well? Again, you realize you are on theforce.net right? So, you post on a message board of a movie series that you are not a fan of?
