A better joke might be that we can't say the Prequels are terrible anymore if this new prequel is good.

    And the Han Solo movie(s)

Jimmy Smits will troll us all

I'm kind of annoyed at that whole "Earf" meme. It's demonstrably obvious that he says "Earth" in the clip. I don't know where the idea he said "Earf" came from, but I can't help but feel like it's kind of racist, frankly.

I've not seen it since it came out, so what - 20 years? I just know the meme and give around zero ****s about Will Smith.

It's because nobody wants to rewatch that stupid movie and they incorrectly assume he says it while he has the cigar in his mouth.

I don't know why, aside from the usual arcing ropes of Ameriwank, anyone would watch let alone really enjoy that turgid nonsense.

I feel if the film took all the BS jingoistic nationalism the film would still be let down by the MacOS compatible alien network.

Right, it's a pretty awful movie (that boss soundtrack tho), but the clip where he says it is less than fifteen seconds long and can be found in numerous places online. The equivalent of two Vines and we could all collectively be a little bit less racist. But it's not exactly a hill worth dying on, so I'll let it go. :p

"Not exactly a hill worth dying on" might as well be this thread's slogan.

I'm not American so honestly, it doesn't have any racial tone to me. Unsurprisingly, without a large or even any contingent of African Americans on this continent, the context of what's racist or not to African Americans is missing. :p

And Wocky, yes, talking about the jingoism is the same thing. Smart AI. Good AI.

I'm half tempted to say something like "I am at least not surprised you like ID4, given the message of alien overlord invasion, but I know your masters will never win because they don't understand humanity properly", based off Wocky's posts. But then I realise this could be disastrous as it would reveal to the hostile invaders of Alpha Centauri that we know their plans...

JFC, this film needs to come out.

And Erf is not racist; growing up in the east end of lahndan, I said Erf, fink, wot. It's a lazy way of speaking, nuffin to do wiv race bro.

You know the Americans are terrified of doing anything meaningful about race relations being accused of racism, Diggles. That we persistently mock the sarf London accent is immaterial; racism! Racism everywhere!

In other news, about 28hrs before I see it.

Being serious for a moment in this thread, this is an idiotic thing to say. Ender is perfectly right to say that in context, he can't or doesn't understand his particular usage to be racist. He lacks the relevant cultural background.

But you can't proclaim your experience as a universality. How and why people say things in East London should have nothing to do with how Americans understand the dialects and dialogue in an American film featuring a black actor portraying a black American character.

Similarly, isn't the way in which you're just steamrollering Americentrism onto his experience proving the same point but without self-awareness?

Thing is, I can think of two people I know who say things like "earf/erf" etc. One's black, of Ghanian parents and the other white of long British history.

Both are from Essex, innit, where they say fings wifout proppa pronunciation.

Like I feel basically you made your point in reverse to Diggy without realising it, basically due to cultural imperialism.

    No. Not really.

I specifically validated both his and your experience: for you two to say something like that isn't racist. I attacked the fact that he made an assertion without any caveats. He simply said "there's nothing racist" as if there was no context in which it could be racist. His statement was thus definitively wrong. There are several statements in which it can be and in fact is racist.

I feel like you jumped to use "Cultural imperialism" without considering what the term actually means. Because my post wasn't an example of it.

No you allowed for my experience, and then attacked his. We have a shared cultural heritage. Despite his being British and my being Australian, his comment was closer to a universal truth than yours.

The Erf doesn't revolve around murica. You think it does. You're extremely narrow minded in that (surprise). But tell me again why I can't have a universal experience, and yet you can?

Where did I talk about my experience being universal? I'm fairly certain that I discussed the way Americans should look at an American film about Americans. Which you know is as particular in confined a context as one could manage. The beauty of written communication is that it still right there for you to check my post and see. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Mate, I quoted the "earf" thing based on a meme. R1.5 said it was racist. I said "yeah, sorry, not to me, context". Diggy said one thing, you said the polar opposite. If there's no universal truth, then you're also wrong or you're both right and it's racist to some, miniature American flags not racist to others?

I mean I feel like this is one of those things that idiot Thomas Jefferson would call a self-evident truth, but I mean that's because it is and you're trolling and we fell for it again, you cheeky bugger you!
