This better be awesome. Cause the potential for "horrifically awful" just notched up substantially. Starting to get a vibe from what is reported/leaked...this film is definitively about style. I fear for the substance. Hope I am wrong.
This is just like the Transformers movies. Too much human involvement, never enough of the good stuff (programs on the grid/transformers on Cybertron). Maybe they should just go the animation route and thats it. I liked Uprising.
As NIN is doing the music, let Ares be as much of a rockstar as he wants. Certainly better than using Leto's own band!
I have to disagree. While innovative visuals was certainly the hook for the original film and has carried itself through the franchise as distinctive...the high concept of the world within the world was the engaging element of the original film. The idea, from even that early on in the computer revolution, that a new reality was being created, and potentially, new life (or at least, awareness). And that new world would be created in our likeness...our structures of governance, our corruptions, our hopes, our fears... It's a modern creation myth that becomes more prescient with each passing decade. Legacy was a stylistic sequel to the original, but the story was far more personal than the original, focusing on Flynn and Son and the concept of what we leave behind. The new world was much more "setting" for events than the original, where learning about the world was the narrative. Thus, while beautiful, Legacy lacks much of the enduring impact of the original film in story and scope. I fear Ares will be much more the kindred of Legacy. With nothing new to say about the world...just more style, new music, and a lightcycle tossed in so people have a frame of reference.
The difference here, though, is that the robots are the main characters in Transformers. But in the Tron films, it's the humans who are the main characters. The Flynns, Alan, Dillinger, etc. Tron, the titular character, has always been a supporting character, for instance. Only Quorra stands as a special exception. The ultimate consequences in the films (Uprising is a different situation) are always those of the real world, with the effects on the Grid of secondary concern.
Oh, I don't know about that...the defeat of Master Control and the liberation of the grid were pretty paramount in the original film. That there was also a positive result in the real world by thwarting Dillinger was more the bonus there. Flynn went in only worrying about real world problems...but by the end, by saving the grid, he got what he needed in the real world as well.
I think there's an interesting, reverse proportion there in terms of consequences. We spend the most time in the Grid and dealing with its problems, but the importance is placed by the main character on the real world. He did save the Grid, but I don't think he cared about that beyond how it affected his ability to escape back into the real world and get his evidence (which is what the MCP was most worried about in the real world to begin with). Though he did care about Tron, Ram and Yori on a personal level. And it's the same thing with Sam in Legacy, whose initial plan is to rush the portal and take care of Clu from the outside (in addition to the primary goal of Clu being a real world invasion as well).
Oh you tease Man, I’m very excited for Tron: Ares coming to fruition. I’m very excited about what that’s gonna bring not only the Tron fan base, but the world of The Grid. I know how hard everybody’s been working within the world of The Grid. I’m really proud over all the obstacles they have with that one to see it come to fruition. And who knows? Maybe it’s not the last anyone will see of Sam and Quorra.
New game from Bithell announced for all platforms: Tron: Catalyst. 3rd-person isometric action game. Kinda evokes the secondary versions of Evolution.
And if you look around you can find 4 seconds from the new D23 trailer floating around. Shows Ares on a light jet ski of sorts.
From the upcoming issue of Empire magazine (the one you've been seeing with Andor in the cover): Their preview article has some quotes from Joachim: -"With Nine Inch Nails making the music, this installment will be a little grittier, a little bit more industrial. It’s been important for me to contrast The Grid and the real world." -"This film will probably be more emotional than people are expecting. It’s about the cost of being human." If that plays out, at least he's going in the right direction, thematically, from where the franchise was going (or, at least, one of them).
The fact they keep emphasizing the music is encouraging. Legacy's biggest er, legacy for the franchise was the high bar it set for the soundtrack.
Interview with Joachim: Talks about a few things as far as he is able to- including the posisbility that the whole film may be available for full frame IMAX, pending finalized FX budgets.
June 17th will see Tron Catalyst hit XB. Hopefully it'll get announced for Switch or Switch 2. Also: Beck name drop! Meet Exo, learn about the character's motives and objectives, and check out gameplay in this new TRON: Catalyst trailer for the upcoming story-driven isometric action game from developer Bithell Games in collaboration with Disney Games. This new trailer also gives us a release date, revealing TRON: Catalyst will be available on Xbox Series X/S on June 17, 2025. In Disney TRON: Catalyst, players are introduced to Exo, a highly resilient and resourceful program with an incredible ability to initiate time loops. With this newfound power, Exo takes on the overlords of a crumbling Grid all while evading Conn, a malevolent agent of CORE. Exo must gain control over her mysterious abilities and uncover the unexplained ‘Glitch’ that threatens the Grid.
And following up on Catalyst's Beck namedrop comes the Tron-themed season for Disney SpeedStorm including Anon (the player character in Evolution) as one of the support crew characters: Only 4 playable racers (and interestingly Castor is named Zuse here), but they did a good job with their unique abilities. And the sypport cre tokens are refreshingly diverse- including Marv!
Was that Quorra that I spotted in the trailer? Yeah, I know who I'll be using in those races if she's readily available.
Turn your lights off. (just tagging for this post so as to not throw out spoilers before people watch- you don't have to tag trailer spoilers after this) Spoiler I love how it shows a Recognizer being tough to take down with a real world military response. This stuff has to be dangerous and resilient to be effective. That derezzing was gruesome too. And that mountain road looks very similar to the roads Sam and Quorra were driving on (which makes sense, since that would be just outside Center City where Encom is and where the Grid-tech is presumably materializing near). It's mostly a teaser still, without specifics of the plot revealed, but it sells the "grid tech in the real world" premise well. EDIT-
So Kevin Flynn (Bridges) is back of course, but I guess the younger cast from Legacy won't be. Going back to my previous post, I would've liked to see Quorra again. I did a brief Google search on the cast and it doesn't look like neither her character nor even Sam are in it.
Yeah, their plot escaping into the real world at the end of the last film suggests that either they have surprise cameos in this one, or will feature in a later film. Unless it's just dropped in a very unsatisfactory way.
It's still very strange if you ask me. They escaped into the real world. This new film takes place in the real world, and yet they appear to be nonexistent? They're not the protagonists; but Jeff Bridges of course continues to reprise his role in a seemingly mentor capacity. Maybe he has a nephew or niece in this third movie who will be the new protagonist?
