    Title: Enough
    Timeframe: Pre-TJK
    Characters: Kyle Katarn, Jan Ors
    Genre: Drama
    Summary: Jan has had enough.
    Author Notes: This is quite possibly one of the most unexplored romances of profic. It started as a challenge of sorts and just sort of...grew. This story is inspired by Titana, as always.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    She and Kyle were laughing together ? she loved watching him laugh ? when his communicator beeped.
    About to take a sip from her drink, she watched as Kyle swore and set down his own drink onto the smooth surface of the bar. He looked at the small display, and the smile disappeared from his handsome face. ?Jan, I?m sorry, but I really need to take this call.?
    ?Go ahead. I don?t mind.? As he slid off the stool, disappeared into the crowd, and left her alone at the bar, she knew that she did mind. Pushing back her wayward brown hair, she sighed and changed her intended sip into a deeper pull as she finished the rest of her drink.
    The bartender droid appeared. ?Another one, Miss??
    Jan considered her glass for a moment before she pushed the now empty glass towards the droid. ?No. I think I?ve had enough.?
    Enough. Enough of this. It seemed like she and Kyle had been trying forever with their fumbled attempts coming and going. Attempts at turning the defining friendship of their lives into something more. But things got in the way. Life got in the way.
    She had met Kyle when he had been fresh out of the Imperial Academy on Carida, but back then, he had been an assignment, someone whom she needed to recruit for the Alliance. Then they had become friends, and he had kissed her. Her first real kiss. Under the stars on a random moon, hiding from Imperial stormtroopers, drunk with exhilaration and danger, enough to feel a little dizzy, but not enough to forget. Jan would never forget. Not the feel of his warm lips against hers, not the scratch of his beard against her cheek, not the trembling of his hands, and not their laughter.
    She would never forget their laughter.
    That had been right before the battle of Endor. A time of dangerous missions, of minute-to-minute living, of being joyful for every extra day, all with Kyle. Afterwards, when the Rebellion had won, they had separated. She had continued with her covert intelligence missions while he had explored the Force in his heritage. Life got in the way. But they had laughed together over long distance holonet transmissions as they tried to take advantage of every opportunity they could. It was dangerous, but it was worth it.
    ?I?ll bet you?re driving those Imperial officers wild,? he had teased on more than one occasion.
    ?Can?t wait to find out what they?ll do when they find out I?m a dirty Rebel,? she said in return. He laughed, and the sound meant so much to her, even over the immense distance between them. ?And what about you? Are girls still trying to get you to shave off your beard??
    ?They aren?t succeeding.? He came closer to his holoprojector. ?See, I still have my ugly facial hair.?
    Long distance was too hard. They had decided that from the start. But try as she might, she could not disentangle herself from him. She could never do that. They were bound together.
    It was just that things got in the way. Life got in the way. Mara too. Mara Jade got in the way.
    Jan had been the one to introduce them. To re-introduce them, really. Mara was a friend of Luke Skywalker, and she had met Kyle on a few occasions, but she had been aloof, distant, not someone who had much to do with Kyle. But when his distrust of the Dark Side became paranoia, it had been Jan?s idea to call the former Emperor?s Hand. Mara owed her a favor, and Jan had collected.
    They had been laughing in the cantina over bad ale when Mara had walked in and paused uncertainly near their booth. Mara had always been more uncertain with allies than with enemies. And Jan had done it. ?Oh Kyle, you remember Mara, don?t you??
    She remembered that Kyle had not looked like a man infatuated. ?
    That was great. You hardly ever see fics about Kyle and Jan, and they definitely deserve more attention.
    Besides, in the Jedi Knight game (the one with the good cut-scenes) they're so cute together . . . .
    I'm really impressed with how you captured their relationship in this fic. And they sounded so much like real people.
    Cool! I really enjoyed that. As has been said, not a couple that you often read about. Good to see them getting some time in the spotlight. Do you know about the story in Tales where Kyle proposes to Jan? It seems that after your story they work things out.
    Anyway nice fic!!
    Awww... that was beautifully written and deliciously angsty (as if I expected anything else from you!)
    Under the stars on a random moon, hiding from Imperial stormtroopers, drunk with exhilaration and danger, enough to feel a little dizzy, but not enough to forget. Awww....fabulous description! I want me a hunky Rebel to be hiding away with [face_love]
    She would never forget their laughter. I love how you keep coming back to laughing, even though their relationship isn't a laughing matter, lol
    For the next few years, Kyle and Mara had become closer friends, had developed a master and apprentice type relationship, and had gone on missions that Jan could never be apart of. I hate when that happens - introducing friends and then watching them just ... live life without you more and more... :( Poor Jan...
    When Kyle came back, the lipstick was all the remained on the edge of a half-empty glass full of Whyren?s and melting ice. Excellent... makes me want to cry for both of them, though. Honestly, people, just get over it and get together already! ;)
    Wonderfully written and very insightful! I love it - well done, my friend! =D=
    How about some more from this dynamic duo? [face_praying] :D
    There is only one possible way that this 'fic could be better and that is if it was longer. Like novel-length.
    I adore Kyle/Jan. Absolutely. When I saw the title of this story I think I died like ten times, I was so excited. And you have their relationship down so well, so perfectly.
    You are my hero, Inara. That's about all I can say. I wanna be like you.
    Where is the jaw-dropping icon?
    I don't think I've ever seen a Kyle/Jan romance. Bravo=D= This is a great 'ship, and I really hope you continue this. I want to see Kyle happy - he's also so sad. :_|
    Update please? [face_praying]
    Thank you so much for this! I don't even need to tell you that I want to see it continue. It simply has to be done.
    Great characterizations as always, and like someone said, Kyle and Jan are real people. I love that. [:D]
    The characterization of Jan was fantastic, like others said.
    My only disapointment was it ended so soon. More, please? [face_praying]
    Just awesome! Kyle is in my top 3 favorite Jedi and I'm glad to see this fiction! I so wish they'd do more with him and Jan...
    As for story specifics, I too love how the laughter plays a role. How despite the serious undertones, there's always the laughter.
    I also like the PoV about Mara getting in the way, and ultimately his Jedi heritage. Not every Jedi is a Luke and Mara (take that for what you will ;P).
    I have to agree with what others have said, this is a criminally neglected romance in both the EU and fanfic (other than the obvious Dark Forces/Jedi Knight stuff, has Jan even been mentioned anywhere else?)
    A nice story, and a very sad sending.
    I too vote for MORE.
    I love that you pick the most random things to write about: Jag/Shawnkyr, Kyle/Jan, Thrawn and Sev'rance, Bly and Aayla...and Chak...
    AND THEY ALL FREAKING ROCK.
    This was beautiful and wonderful, and I'm so happy to see that it'll be another vig. It makes me glad that you'll be continuing this. I can't wait to see what Kyle thinks about this - surely he won't let Jan walk away like that.
    Kyle and Jan are one of the best couples ever. It's great to see a fic that's not the typical 'ship. [:D] =D=
    Hey! Where's the rest of this? :p
    ?See, I still have my ugly facial hair.?
    I think it's seeeeeeexy. :*
    She knew, she had always known, that they would be beautiful in love.
    That's such a wonderful line. [face_love] I love how the end seems like it could go either way - Jan's tired of trying to start a relationship with Kyle, so she's just not going to try anymore. Maybe let it happen when it happens. And on the other hand, she knows it would be a great thing, so she's not going to let either of them waltz around anymore. Make it happen regardless of what gets in the way.
    But that description of the whiskey glass with lipstick - way cool. :D
    I love these two! [face_love]
    There isn't enough about Kyle and Jan out there. I enjoyed the look at their relationship, how Jan has had her fill with Kyle, and even the glimsp at Kyle's connection to Mara. Thanks for putting Ms. Jade in there. lol!
    Nice beginning! Where will this go?!! More soon!
    First off, I just want to say that I'm thrilled with the wonderful responses. I was afraid that no one was interested in this couple since, as it's been pointed out, they are so neglected. Thanks to all of your encouragement, I'm already outlining the next installment!
    JediTristan: More.
    Yes, ma'am.
    SakuraTsukikage: That was great. You hardly ever see fics about Kyle and Jan, and they definitely deserve more attention.
    Oh, totally. People need to realize that there are more romances out there besides the ones involving the Solo/Skywalkers.
    Besides, in the Jedi Knight game (the one with the good cut-scenes) they're so cute together . . . .
    [face_love]They are! And they have this great dynamic...
    I'm really impressed with how you captured their relationship in this fic. And they sounded so much like real people.
    Thanks! It was my ultimate goal in this fic. I'm tired of the superhero love affair. :rolleyes: We need some everyday romances.
    DreamingIce: Welcome, Padawan Sis! [:D]
    Poor underwritten people Kyle and Jan are...
    :_| I know! And they are such cool people too...
    Eyrezer: Cool! I really enjoyed that. As has been said, not a couple that you often read about. Good to see them getting some time in the spotlight.
    Thank you! It was a lot of fun for me to write about them, especially since they are so deserving of some spotlight.
    Do you know about the story in Tales where Kyle proposes to Jan? It seems that after your story they work things out.
    Yup. I wasn't really clear on the timeline with this fic, but this happens right before the NJO. Since I've decided to continue it, this arc will continue to incorporate more events.
    RedGold: Kyle and Jan... woot!
    [face_dancing] Thanks for reading!!
    jags_gurl: Awww... that was beautifully written and deliciously angsty (as if I expected anything else from you!)
    One day I'll write something happy, I swear!
    I want me a hunky Rebel to be hiding away with [face_love]
    They should totally have a mail order Rebel service. Kyle is so [face_love]
    I love how you keep coming back to laughing, even though their relationship isn't a laughing matter, lol
    Thanks for noticing! It was one of the things that I felt like they would share. They have such an easy, comfortable friendship, one that's bereft of formality (quite unlike Jag and Shawnie [:D]). And I figured that for people who are continuously on the run, laughter is a rare commodity.
    Excellent... makes me want to cry for both of them, though. Honestly, people, just get over it and get together already! ;)
    Seriously. All romances in the Star Wars universe seem so dysfunctional. Luke/Mara, Wedge/Iella, Tycho/Mirax...let's not even talk about Jaina and Jacen....
    Wonderfully written and very insightful! I love it - well done, my friend! =D=
    Thank you!!
    How about some more from this dynamic duo?
    You'll definitely be seeing more of this wonderful couple. [face_love]
    TheCrazyRodian: There is only one possible way that this 'fic could be better and that is if it was longer. Like novel-length.
    Gah! Don't give me ideas, Rodi! Honestly, everything I touch turns into an epic. AHP and FNM weren't supposed to be as long as they are, and if I'm not careful, this might suffer the same fate. I'll expand on this more, but I'll keep it short and sweet...and therefore less painful.
    I adore Kyle/Jan. Absolutely. When I saw the title of this story I think I died like ten times, I was so excited. And you have their relationship down so well, so perfectly.
    They are my favorite canonical couple, hands down (followed by Han and Leia). It's why I felt like I need to write about them, as a tribute to their great relationship. [:D]
    You are my hero, Inara. That's about all I ca
    Did you ever play/watch the Dark Forces computer games, Inara? My Kyle Katarn knowledge comes first from them, then second from the other source material. I remember playing the original Dark Forces and thinking it was soooo much fun, then booting up Jedi Knight at a friend's house a few years later and almost wetting my pants it was so cool. I'm all about a good storyline in the games I play, and I thought Kyle's character arc was always totally awesome.
    I don't think I really appreciated it, though, until I finally broke down and got Jedi Outcast two years ago, and made my way all the way through it. Ever since then I've been a diehard Kyle/Jan fanatic, more than ever before.
    I dunno--I figure that you of all people have a detailed knowledge of background information; I just wasn't sure if you had ever gone through the Jedi Knight/Jedi Outcast story arc from the gamer's perspective.
    Gah, I am so in love with the idea of a good Kyle/Jan story. I am drooling in anticipation. When I get home to the States next week (yes!) to my real computer, I know what I'm doing right away--installing Jedi Outcast and catching up on my delicious Kyle/Jan back story. Mwahahaha.
    I can't believe I never got around to posting for this!
    I love this. It made me want to know these characters...which means you're going to have to write more stuff. And I particularily liked the half glass thing. It's half empty and the only thing that will fill the glass that is is life is Jan...beautifully done.
    Oh...And this needed to be back on page one!
    I played it a long time ago, so I was very much inspired by them, and I adored the relationship between Jan and Kyle.
    I tried to stay true to the game, and I will continue to do so, but I played it so long ago that I don't remember all the details. It's why I'm relying on Gamer and RPG sources, which are still canon. Please, please, if I'm missing some detail, let me know - my memory gets confused because of all the fics I'm always working on. :)
    You'll definitely get an Inara-style story on Kyle and Jan. [:D] And now that you mention it, next time I go home, I'm going to bring my Dark Forces and my Jedi Outcast so I can refresh my memories.
    Glad to see you here!
    Oh, you mean like this:
    [image=http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a7/Inara47/aragorn_kyle.jpg]
    I can see what you mean. He does have the whole rugged, unshaven, outdoorsy, "Hi, I'm here to solve all your problems and kill all the Sith bothering you, kthxbye" kind of look that we'd expect from Kyle.
    [face_love][face_love]
    I'll try to forgive you. :p
    I definitely plan to write some more. In fact, I hope to update it soon. I'm glad you liked the glass analogy. [:D] It's why throughout the entire piece, I never said the glass was half full. I only used the word empty. I just hope that Kyle realizes it too.
    So expect a post soon! I guess I should ask, since I see that it's the new trend, but does anyone want a PM when I post an update?
