I'm pretty sure it was Devin the day after the rumor came out.

 

Well, you guys are making my point -- they don't lose them willy nilly. That is, for no good reason.

When they do lose them or drop them, it's because they're in battle or in a chase sequence.

That suggests that if Luke lost his lightsaber, he lost it in action. That suggests peril.

 

Peril that occurs off screen right before the movie. Awesome.

Perhaps one of the spinoffs will follow our hero, Luke Skywalker in between Episode 6 and 7.

PS (my cover for stream of consciousness): I am sure Devin has engendered hatred within LFL. Wouldn't this misinformation be perfect revenge?

So this is the nightmare scenario for this movie: It starts with Luke's Bespin hand gripping Anakin's lightsaber falling through the atmosphere only to be found by a 60 year old John Boyega who then meets up with Daisy Ridley which leads to them coincidentally finding Hand and Chewie who then search the galaxy for Luke but then stumble upon a weapon that destroys galaxies.

Perchance would you know where to find a moderately priced pitchfork. Just in case.

Man, there's been a lot of silly rumors lately...I hope most of it isn't true.

 

If found myself punning at work the other day. This rumor is doing terrible things to me.

 

Who mentioned carbonite earlier? That's the only way this "Boyega as ROTJ storm trooper" rumor makes sense.

A-ha! It always explains how *he* could be a storm trooper, but the Empire actually really was defeated all those years ago….am I losing it?

 

Star Wars does start in the middle of things. So this would be normal.

 

Not that I would like him being one, but why can't Boyega be a modern day stormtrooper, especially if the Empire might still exist?

 

I would argue that it hasn't been done in the OT. At first glance, things look a bit random. R2 seems to find his way to Luke by chance. But R2's mission was to find Ben. If he wasn't captured by the Jawas, the poor little fella would have searched to the ends of Tatooine for Ben. But he was sold to Owen--pretty random. And then he went and did a runner looking for Ben.

Let's say, for argument's sake, R2 was sold to some other random person. He still would have tried to reach Ben. If he ran away from Luke, he almost certainly would have run away from another owner (assuming the restraining bolt was removed). And if he was never captured, he would have kept chugging along until he found Ben. Ben knows Luke, of course, and Ben understands Luke's importance (his dad was a great Jedi, even if at this time he wasn't actually written as the same character as Vader). So it wouldn't have been random for Ben to have sought out Luke after R2 made it to Ben. Ben would still have been too old for this kind of thing... So I'd argue the R2 thing isn't as random as one might think.

 

@TtheForceHurts put forward the interesting theory that Boyega IS one of these elite Force-using "stormtroopers", and that he is the first one to defect to the Alliance. And becomes Luke's padawan.

 

The latest rumor doesn't say the Empire is totally gone. Just that they were defeated. That suggests an Imperial Remnant of some kind.

Hence stormtroopers. No reason for Boyega to be from the past.

So some kind of remnant. The rumor is too vague and poorly written to infer much more.

 

Sounds almost like someone is having fun with all internet sources, watching them squirm.

That Donnelly doesn't seem to be phased by the bizarreness of this scenario may be the strangest part of this whole rumor. The timeline doesn't have anything to do with anything. We know this movie is taking place about 30 years after Endor. The issue would have to be with some atypical aspect of Boyega's character.

 

So basically the Empire becomes similar to the Rebel Alliance. Full blown terrorists rather than freedom fighters is what i'm getting from that rumor.

I still dislike this entire rumor and, thus far, everything that has elaborated on it.

I think Donnelly's article is just written poorly. I don't think he's saying anything about time travel or an ageless Boyega. People are just interpreting it that way.

Almost certainly a miscommunication.

 

It doesn't and it should be a red flag to you that this guy is only speculating on stuff that he read from other sites.
