If they are following that style marketing I think they should go the next step and just call it Star Wars: Episode IX: Endgame. I know people threw that title out there jokingly, but I’m not even kidding. It conveys the finality they need, and it’s a clever way to guarantee that Episode IX and Avengers are the two highest grossing films of the year, because everyone will need to see both just to compare the two and weigh in on which they think is the better film.

I think i speak for everyone here when i say can we get a title already! Jeeze It's like Disney is afraid we'll all hate it or something. I'm telling you right now though it ain't gonna be balance of the force. That's just way too predictable and besides it's been done already with other star wars things. There's a book with that title and a pinball videogame too. Having the word force in two separate episode titles would be dumb. Remember when Episode 8 was supposedly The first order strikes back? JUST TELL US THE TITLE DISNEY!

Yep. But there probably won’t be any physical EPIX merchandise at Celebration. No way can they have masses of T shirts and posters sitting around without the title leaking beforehand.

That was my logic for an earlier release as well, but apparently they pulled it off for ROTS when they did the title reveal at SDCC in 2004. Different times sure, but then again none of the Celebration posters have ever leaked ahead of the panels so we know it can be done.

Was anyone here around for the Title debacle of 1983? You know when Return of the Jedi was gonna be revenge of the jedi and it was already on posters and T shirts. Then at the last minute George decided a Jedi doesn't take revenge so they changed it. I was 4 at the time so i have no memory of that. Just curious if anyone else remembers?

I was 10 at the time and barely remember it. My only memory of it is a television news program report explaining the change sometime before the release. I don't remember it being a big deal, but then again, I was 10, and of course, there was no internet.

    This has to stop.

I did not name any names nor call any one certain person out and the word our isn't ALL inclusive.

A person can either include or exclude themselves in the group to which I referred.

Your post is ok, we all understood what you meant.

The other post that said that "fanboys wouldn't recognize a good movie from a bad one even if it hit them in the face", is very offensive.

The word our is inferred to mean a large group or in this case the board. I agree that you do not need to use our, as it is flat out wrong to be used that way. Your opinion is not the same as many here, so don’t imply everyone agrees.

I'm only quoting this thread so everyone who participated in it sees this response, which I'll break into two quick points: 1) get back on topic, and 2) remember that you're here to discuss the films, not other fans.

Not really, but I do remember going into a video store to rent ROTJ on VHS, and my brother used to mistakenly call it "Revenge Of The Jedi" because he'd gotten used to that title from early reports, I guess. When he asked the guy behind the counter if "Revenge of The Jedi" was in stock, the guy responded, "REVENGE of The Jedi? Sorry, never heard of that. Don't know what you're talking about." See, people were obnoxious back then, too!

I remember. I was 9 yrs old. GL was VERY thorough and paid extreme attention to detail. Intelligent man. In 1980 Yoda told Luke "A Jedi uses the Force for Knowledge and Defense never for attack." Also Yoda taught Luke that he should be "Calm. At Peace. Passive." Therefore that change made perfect sense and kept the Jedi way on the straight and narrow path.

Yeah, I do remember it happening, but I don't remember too much discussion about it. That was before we had discussion boards, YouTube, etc. So the title change didn't make as much of a splash as it would today. I think film companies need to be a lot more careful these days. If they announce episode 9's title this weekend, for example, and then come back in two months and tell us that they changed their mind and they're calling it something else, there will be about a thousand YouTube videos overanalyzing why they changed it, and countless threads on message boards discussing how Disney sucks for not coming up with the right title in the first place (or they suck for changing it, depending on which title people like better.) Back in 1983, I don't think people cared much. I remember it more like a fun little trivia fact we told each other ("Hey, did you hear they changed the title from Revenge Of The Jedi to Return Of The Jedi?" "Oh ok. That's cool.")

Would be interesting if that is the McGuffin of the movie. Everyone is out to get it for the knowledge.

I may be very wrong, but the Journal of the Whills is what we as audience are watching. It is a history book where the Star Wars story is being read and told to us.

Or I am very wrong, but I recall something like this.
