    Much less nihilistic, surely.

"The endless speculation about what I meant in the teaser, it's time for the Jedi . . . to end."

Well if Disney does decide to end the Jedi Order, their is always the various periods of thr ToR era to explore.

No dice. The foreign translations are all Jedi plural.

One of my original thoughts upon watching the trailer was the line was just cut
The Jedi must end ... the tyranny of evil

The white/red dust planet with the speeders is apparently called Crait, which was mentioned in the R1 ultimate visual guide.

My guess: "The Jedi must end.....and be remade"

Edit: You can see Kylo's scar better in this set of photos (#23)

Kennedy said Todd Fisher must have been "confused."

Now, it's logical after all. But it really won't be the same without her. Without THEM (Carrie AND Leia).

Makes me worried, though, about what will become of Leia herself.

Or they are going to do something like kill Leia at the start of IX. Have the ship she's on ambushed by a First Order Naval Battle Group or something similar that can be done with leftover footage of Carrie from VII and VIII.

When IX comes out it will be close to three years since her death so it won't largely be seen as such when the movie hits theaters. I am not trying to be morbid here. They have only three choices going forward: Kill the character (either in IX or in the EU); Recast the role; CGI Tarkin route. They already stated the latter two are out. And Star Wars fans are going to want to know what happened to Leia post-Last Jedi.

It's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, but I thought this was a much better teaser than the TFA one.

It's not surprising unfortunately. Back in January all the media outlets were clamoring "Lucasfilm is negotiating with Carrie Fisher's estate for her CGI likeness!" and by the time I went on the internet again in the afternoon they all had "updates" saying "Nevermind, its not true." Click bait reporters, the TRUE hive of scum and villainy.

Yes, it very much 'unsold' me on the movie. I would like it to be "End and begin a new". But I doubt it, there will be no new jedi order. The jedi will remain only 1 or 2, just like it was in the OT, if they can sell this well it might work, but again I doubt it.

I want to avoid a conversation about Anakin's fall to the dark side as I'm sure this board is well aware of those factors.

The Jedi Order was hypocritical in its capacity as a peacekeeping organisation (derived from its ideology) when it involved itself militarily in the Clone Wars. If Palpatine's manipulation of the Senate in the PT wasn't enough, the Clone Wars cartoon presented us ample cases for systems wanting to leave the Republic.

What I reasonably believe Luke should be aware of, is that the Order acted outside the scope of its duty to keep the peace. They were investigating a Sith Lord, two as Yoda suspected, and Dooku was the supposed leader of the CIS. They became politically involved in the conflict this way. The Republic is a product of the material world and the Jedi prioritised its standing instead of remaining detached as they should have.

A drawback to this approach is that we don't know the full history of Luke's academy, which I assume was a Jedi one. Kylo Ren and Snoke presumably have a hand in changing Luke's opinion on the Jedi and teaching new ones.

I think you're isolating the hypothesis' ("theory" is a stretch, in my opinion) origin to that one piece of dialogue when it's been around for longer. The idea of grey Jedi or a new evolution, from where I'm looking at it, comes from what we know about Kylo Ren (that Snoke chose him because he sensed both light and dark in him), the Bendu's existence and the new canon's dabbles in non-Jedi groups (namely the Guardians of Whills and the Church of the Force). The only additional support I see from this trailer is the implication of a bigger picture in Luke's dialogue ("It's so much bigger").

Might be worth noting here that the Guardians and CotF both generally seem "light-side", and the Bendu isn't really portrayed that positively.

    Thoughts:

    1. I love me some Star Wars! Trailer excitement!
    2. Oh, hey, it's Rey. Makes sense to pick up with her, visually, given where the last film ended.
    3. I have a weird amount of nostalgia attached to that damn Lucasfilm logo.
    4. This looks a bit more Rogue One than TFA, in terms of having an actual eye for composition and cinematography. Much richer, less digitally flat in terms of lighting, and some striking images.
    5. I like the emphasis on what seems to be Rey's Jedi training. I like it a lot. I've always really liked the idea of really digging into Jedi training, in how you learn the philosophy but also how you also actually learn to use the Force, to visualize what you're doing and tap into this mystical energy field. There's something very mystical and stirring and goosebump-raising about it when done right and I like the idea that this film would be willing to really dig into that material, even if it is kind of a TESB parallel. Maybe this is all we're going to actually get, but I like what the trailer is suggesting.
    6. LEIA! Actual Resistance people doing Resistance stuff. God I hope this movie actually digs into the Resistance and doesn't treat the whole galactic conflict as boring background crap to be ignored if it can't be mystery-boxed. LEIA!
    7. Uh-oh, looks like Kylo Ren's been all emo again! Here I was hoping this movie wouldn't suck and they had to remind me Kylo Ren is going to be a major character.
    8. Goddammit stop burying those whispers in the sound mix it's super annoying when I can't make them out.
    9. WTF do you mean "Balance." How is this something distinct from the light? Why is this being contrasted with light and darkness? Are we going to get some idiotic, horribly misguided and misunderstood "balance is gray" bull****? Old books in a tree are a cool image and everything but goddammit this movie is going to turn stupid, isn't it?
    10. I like a good long shot. Abrams never wanted to give us a solid master shot of anything. And here we've got a stylish long shot.
    11. What's the deal with these weird speeders trailing red dust? It's a cool image and everything but they look so weird as a concept. And so just obviously designed to create this one cool image.
    12. Kind of a bold choice to go with coma Finn. It's interesting to reference back to that thread, which suggests it may actually be a meaningful element of the film, trying to get him out of that coma. Or it's just an appropriately ominous shot. But it's not like they should be worried they're going to spoil the movie by showing Finn actually running around doing something. He's a major character in the movie, we know he's going to get out of the coma and do something. It's okay to acknowledge that. Odd choice to make that our sole bit of Finn.
    13. Poe! I like Poe. He's a badass. Also, this is the first time we've seen BB-8. God, it's nice to not have BB-8 crammed down our throats. That hallway looks like a decently successful attempt at trying to recreate the OT aesthetic, too, rather than fancy things up. It's kind of interesting, though, how completely Rey-and-Luke-centric this teaser is. It barely bothers to include Finn and Poe at all. I'm sure future trailers will expand the scope, but they clearly want to set a tone here that's focused in on Rey and Luke on Achoo.
    14. Hey, that's the ass end of an A-wing in that hangar! Also, I like the very functional, industrial-looking ceiling.
    15. Look, there's a lot more to making a good Star Wars movie than just pushing that lizard-brain button that says OOOH STAR WARS STAR WARS IS COOL. I'm talking to you, TFA fans. Way, way, way more to making a good Star Wars movie. But you know what, that's part of it. And dammit if I didn't see that shot of the Millennium Falcon swooping in and think MOTHER****ING MILLENNIUM FALCON **** YEAH MILLENNIUM FALCON. I love you, Millennium Falcon. You make me feel good inside.
    16. Also, you know, that sky doesn't look particularly like Achoo (can we pause a moment and consider the possibility that this ridiculous stupid sneeze of a planet name might be an even worse name than Snoke?). I had assumed that's an indication that Rey is likely to leave the planet during the movie (it was never really particularly likely that she'd be stuck on Achoo the entire movie, but this helps suggest it), but you know, I do wonder if Chewbacca might have dropped her off and then left her to train. Because, you know, it's kind of odd considering the possibility of Chewie basically just sitting on the Falcon for however long, twiddling his thumbs while Rey trains with Luke.
    17. Didn't your parents tell you not to run with lightsabers? Oh, wait, that's right, your parents probably didn't because they abandoned you as a kid.
    18. Oh god, not Kylo again. The cutting implies a Kylo-Rey confrontation, but the lighting in each shot doesn't. It would be interesting to see him at least get a chance to antagonize somebody else. Bother Finn and Poe while Rey trains. But on the other hand that's a bit too much of the TESB formula, perhaps.
    19. Whose pad is burning? The foreground looks like Luke and Artoo, but frankly that truncated-Jedi-Temple-type structure doesn't look like anything on Achoo. Flashback to the destruction of Luke's Jedi Order? He was away while Kylo slaughtered his students and rushed back to the scene of devastation?
    20. Hey, Phasma. I remember when she was going to be a thing. They're not even pretending anymore in this trailer, even though the tie-in material suggests differently. Maybe there's some kind of inverse relationship between Phasma and marketing. The less they market her in the promotional material, the more she'll actually do in the movie.
    21. FLEET BATTLE YES. Not sure what those craft are meant to be. Frankly, they look kind of derivative -- they're just the front half of Nebulon-Bs, basically. Also I kind of miss the motley Rebel fleets that had more than one kind of ship. Those half-Nebulons seem to be the only capital ships we see, though. Neat thing, though -- The Empire Strikes Back lacked a big fleet battle. So this, at least, is one way the movie's avoiding getting caught up in formula.
    22. The **** you talking, Luke? God, what a stupid note to end on. Either you're actually going to **** all over the legacy of the films with some ridiculous gray Jedi nonsense, you're just teasing us with the idea that you're going to **** all over the legacy of the films with misleading advertising in order to generate controversy and interest and epic foreboding, or you're giving us more ****ty mopey depressive failure Luke so he can get some kind of turnaround arc except the starting point for Luke should never be mopey depressive failure and frankly that stupid balance talk hints otherwise. Man, I was digging this trailer, I was all ready for this movie to maybe be reasonably okay, and then for its big finale this trailer just completely **** the bed.
    23. So I dunno. I'm back where I started before I ever saw a trailer. I'm cautiously excited for what Rian Johnson brings to the series, I have some hope he can at least do something to marginally salvage the horrible, horrible foundation Abrams gave him to build on . . . but I'm also pretty worried that it sounds like the film is going to deal in some really, incredibly stupid ideas around the Force. We'll see.
    24. You know what this trailer didn't have? Lando. You know what Billy Dee has said this movie won't have? Lando. **** these movies, man. Where's my Lando?
